What WAS the veil and what was it for?
I've always found it strange and interesting that there is randomly this room, entirely empty except for the veil. The veil which kills Sirius. Of course, considering it is in the Department of Mysteries, that is part of the point, hmm? That it is a mystery?
But I would like to know. Why is there naught but a veil in an auditorium-like room?
I think that perhaps it was sort of like the gladiator days. The coliseums where criminals fought to the death. Perhaps they used the veil as a sort of execution device? And the auditorium-like setting was so people could watch?
What do you think?

<>xX Loony Luna Xx (I'm just pulling this out of thin air as I write.)
I think that since the veil is such a powerful magical item, they wanted to make sure that no one could accidentally fall in. By putting it alone in such a large room, you automatically have to assume it's powerful or very important. I wonder why more safeguards weren't in place around it though. That's the Ministry for you! Madison of Slytherin I think that is a very interesting and realistic explanation behind why the veil was there.
I also wonder, however, if seeing it in the middle of a room like that and assuming it's powerful/important wouldn't make someone want to touch it MORE? I mean, so after you've seen Sirius fall through, you won't be hanging out there any time soon...but when I read about it/see it, my first instinct is always to go up to it and stick my hand through. Hahaha. I know that in real life, curious people like myself would go "OOH, that must be awesome important, let's TOUCH IT and see what it does!"
But besides that point...I just love my "Gladiator/Arena/Execution" theory. Hahaha.
Another question, closely associated with this is:
Why was it only Harry and Luna that could hear the voices around/behind the veil?
The most obvious explanation is the thestral theory: That because they had seen death, they could hear the voices, just the same as they were the only ones who could see the thestrals. But I like to think there's some deeper meaning to it. What do you think? xX Loony Luna Xx Yeah, I can certainly see how seeing such an item would make you want to touch it, but I think I would be too scared. I still think if it was sooooo powerful, some sort of spell should have in place to prevent accidents.
Of course, with the Harry and Luna voices concern, I thought about the thestral theory as well. Also, with me being a Luna fan, I wonder if it doesn't show a deeper connection between the two. I don't necessarily mean I think they should be together as a couple, but maybe they just have some kind of special connection. Madison of Slytherin Well, I think perhaps it shows some kind of deeper connection between them and the dead, not necessarily between each other. I think, not only had they both SEEN people die, but they seemed to be more surrounded by it/know more about it than most of their friends.
Death had just been a part of their lives, unlike the others...
I think you bring up a very good point about accident prevention. If it was something powerful enough to kill like that, why was it so easy to get near?
