Memory tiptoed carefully up the endless spiral staircase. Her heart pounded in her ears, even though it felt like it was in her stomach. Her shaky hand rested lightly on the mahogany banister, leaving a light, uneven trail of sweat behind her. She had waited for this moment her whole life - the time she would receive a Painted Soul of her own. However, she was aware that her application was the last one accepted by Jamie and Marissa, and she had to prove herself even more than the others did.

The floor creaked cautiously when Memory steeped onto the landing. It came as quite a shock to her when she realized that she had been staring at her feet the whole time.

Nerves, she guessed.

The young woman's eyes widened in awe at the grand hallway that stretched out before her. She gasped at the lush carpet and the heavy red curtain at the end of the hall. It was the entry to the fabled gallery that Marissa spoke so often of. Memory began the fateful journey down the corridor.

She stopped abruptly at the end of the hallway and waited patiently for Jamie to reveal the room behind the curtain.

"Now, as you've all seen the photos of the paintings, you know which one is yours. If there is not a baby Soul beside it, I suggest you just go to it and touch it, talk to it, look at it. Whatever you feel is right to you. It's how I got Ophelia, just by touching the painting. Marissa found Cole already there, so it all seems to be different,"* Jamie instructed as Marissa drew back the curtain.

There were no babies in the room.

Three paintings lay in the center of the room on a small table. Although they were rolled canvases, Memory immediately knew which one was her's - the third one on the right. She felt like she was wading through water as she tried to reach her painting. Memory heard a small cry from the canvas. She glanced over at Kit and Chaos. They hadn't heard a sound.

Memory reached the table and picked up the faded cylinder as if she was holding a baby. Without unrolling the painting, she cradled it in her arms, rocking it back and forth. It was as if a river had begun the run under the nervous guardian's feet and guide her in swaying the Soul. The world fell away into a black oblivion and for those solitary moments, she had only one purpose - and that was to bring a child into the world.

Suddenly, Memory felt a most peculiar feeling push out on the insides of the painting. It seemed slightly akin to having two tiny hands pressing on the inner walls of the roll. She loosened her grip on the canvas and it unraveled into her open palms.

Memory drew in a quick breath as she studied the paints. They seemed to vibrate with a quite hum, moments away from becoming life. A vine crept up a stem, leading to a budding flower. But instead of this delicate flower, a brilliant rendering of the earth was set against a dark background.

The guardian heard a soft pounding coming from the painting. It took her a moment to realize that it was the heartbeat of her new soul. As the sound grew louder, the room seemed to fall away and return to the rhythm of the beat.

In a sudden rush the paintings all dulled ever so slightly, as if something had been taken from it.*

Memory immediately noticed the change in the painting. As she spun, a figure in the corner caught her eye.

She sat propped up by a pillar on the right side of the room, her eyes gleaming. Her eyes! One deep blue, the other dark green. She wore a green baby suit that was light and flowing. Around her thin neck was a pendant, a thin golden chain. The item that hung from the necklace was the Earth, a tiny glass model of it.*

She rushed over to the girl. When she dropped down on the floor in front of the child, the baby tore her eyes away from the rug she was sitting on and gazed into Memory's eyes.

They were captivated with each other.

The girl moved a pale hand up to her mouth. She began to suck intently on two of her fingers, quickly losing interest in the figure before her. The child giggled to spot about three feet to the left of Mercury and spread out her legs, stretching the elastic cotton fabric of her baby suit. The baby removed the fingers from her mouth and used that hand to lift the model of the earth into her mouth.

Memory began to cry softly as she scooped her Soul into her arms. She bounced the girl up and down, causing her to drop the sphere from her mouth and giggle in enjoyment. The baby reached up to Memory's hair and grasped a chunk of it in her clenched fist.

Memory's heart felt like it was about to burst. Never before had she felt so much, so much care for anyone.

"Celestyn," she whispered, "Your name is Celestyn."

Celestyn clapped her hands in approval.

Memory made for the doorway, shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. She gave nod to Jamie and Marissa. Celestyn perked up, looking every way, taking in her surroundings vigorously.

And in that instant they both knew.

This love would last.

[Out of character.]

10 . 08 . 05 - I deleted the other updates. And I'm still working on reorganization.

9 . 24 . 05 - I apologize for being A.W.O.L. for so long; I've been frustrated with the layout. Now, I'm pulling in some banners that I actually like. And updating everything to fit in with Celestyn's toddler apperance. Everything's a mess. Be patient.

Celestyn was born in a rush of air from a painting at the Painted Souls Headquarters on the 5th of December, 2004. She had short, cropped hair, dual colored eyes (one green, one blue), a light green baby suit, and a stunning necklace swinging around her neck.

She was a rambuntious baby with ever-changing moods and an inate knowledge of what exactly the worst thing to do at any given moment would be. Teething didn't come easily to her, but neither did eating solid foods for the first time. During this time period, she gradually learned how to crawl and make incomprehesible, burbling noises.

Stage One
Baby

"A Soul starts off as a baby, exactly like human beings. They cannot do much at this stage, again like a human baby. Most will be able to make noises, not that they'll be understandable. Some may have learned to sit up or crawl, but this usually develops in the toddler stage."*

Stage Two
Toddler

"The toddler stage is one of adventure and exploration! A toddler Soul, blessed with newfound abilities abilities such as speech and sufficient motor skills, will be extremely curious about its surrounding environment. Embrace the explorer in your Soul at this stage; its discoveries may greatly affect it's future!"*

Bio

Raised in a strictly fundamentalist family, Memory was deserted by them when she came out. She moved into a small house which she decorated with incense sticks, fans, candles, windchimes, fountains, and small gardens. It was her own, yet she was forced into a horrible depression by her family's absense. Memory, suffering so, took a part time secretary job at a local law firm; she'd never been to college.

But her misery lasted, unnoticed by anyone but herself. She applied for Painted Soul, hoping that this innocent young life would clear her mind.

Celestyn and Squishler's relationship is one of strange proportions. When they first met, Squishler was disapointed to discover that Celestyn was just a baby, but as they began to interact, Squishler took on a sort of maternal role towards Celestyn, helping her put a flower in her hair and so forth. Celestyn even began to trust her enough to let Squishler hold her necklace, a privelige she does not even bestow up Memory very often.

Earth Necklace
This is a beautiful necklace; an intricate Earth hanging from a silver chain. The continents are raised, deep green bumps, and the oceans sillouette the land masses, shadowing them with a dark blue. The chain is currently too long for Celestyn, but she will grow into it.

She's recently learned how to take on and off the necklace by herself. Although she is just a child, she recognizes the importance that the necklace has to her being. Celestyn gives it only to people she feels a connection with, and even then she is very careful with it. Because the Souls are her kin, Celestyn rarely feels uncomfortable handing them it.

When she is parted from it, she becomes angry unless she gave it to someone else of her own will. The necklace dulls when not around Celestyn's neck or in her hand, losing its glossy sheen.

Mary-Janes
These Mary-Janes were a quick buy at Payless when Memory decided that Celestyn needed a pair of shoes, as she was quickly growing and fabric wrapped feet wouldn't cut it anymore. They're made of shiny, purple plastic with a gold metal buckle to one side and black soles

Ah, shoes! This is a concept that Celestyn is not very familiar with, and she is certainly not taking it into her heart easily. She loves taking them off and leaving them around the house, preferably in a place where Memory cannot find them; such as behind the refridgerator. Although only a toddler, Celestyn already knows how to the get what she wants.

It's a losing battle, however. Everytime, Memory finds them and puts them back on Celestyn despite her screams and tears.

Clothes

Away with the old baby suit and in with the new clothing! Memory bought these when Celestyn's suit began to tear at the seams, seeing as it was rapidly becoming too small for her. Celestyn's clothes now consist of a sheer top over a small, cotton green dress.

She's adjusting to these better than she is the shoes; Celestyn doesn't mind wearing them as much and only takes them off at times when she recognizes that Memory needs everything to run smoothly. For example, when Memory's boss came to visit, Celestyn shed everything and crawl around the house as quick as she could, showing off her nudity.

Memory was not amused.

Earrings
Ouch. Celestyn didn't realize that getting her ears pierced would hurt so badly, or else she would've put up a much bigger fight that she did. (She didn't actually put up any fight.) Either way, now she has two lovely studs in her ears. She's been back for a check-up visit to the piercing place, and they said that she need to leave them in for a little longer.

Regardless, Memory has already started buy sensitive-skin earrings for Celestyn to replace the round, silver sphere. So far, Memory has two pairs of clay animal earring and one pair of dangling chains with feathers attached here and there.

The Painting

A single vine entangles itself around a beautiful stem. The stem holds in its grasp a blossoming earth, shining with the light of creation. The oceans and seas are matte creatures, flat against the paper, yet they seems to have a mind of their own; Memory can swear she's seen them move. The picture is set against a green background, highlighted with streaks of a lighter green here and there.

Celestyn's appearance reflects this painting in several ways. She has dual colored eyes, one green, for the land, and the other blue, for the sea. She wears a small, glass earth around her neck. Celestyn also wears a green dress, reflecting the green hue of the painting. However, Celestyn's lavender hair doesn't quite fit in, showing that every child is fundamentally different from his or her own mother.

Celestyn

Celestyn means heaven, pure and simple. It refers to a utopia referenced by many religions, and in most, it succeeds life. Heaven is a place of purity and innocence, of joy and sadness, and of the celebration of life and the clarity of death. Yet it exceeds our understanding on so many levels; many demand concrete evidence of its existence.

The Soul by that name is bound to create a perfect metaphor for the name. It tells that she will be kind and undaunted by life's many traps, but it will be in her near-perfect nature that she begins to doubt herself and every thing around her.

However, nothing is set in stone until the life itself begins.

Walk with me.
The porch is brick, covered in plants. You'll notice that the majority of them are of Orential origin. If you look carefully enough, you can see two wooden rocking chairs peeking out from beneath the jungle. One is old, the other is new. One is big, the other is small, it's for a child.

Open the wooden door by the brass doorknob. You'll find that the door is rarely locked and the windows are rarely closed. However, today, is unusual. Every window in the house is closed.

The first thing you see is a red, patterned rug splayed out over the light wood floors. The living room. The walls are beige but the border is decorated with Chinese symbols; luck, happiness, you guess. You wouldn't really know, you don't know the language.

A puffy emerald armchair faces a small color television no bigger than a computer moniter. Take a seat. It looks so welcoming. You'll notice the three floor length windows across the room in a small alcove. A couch similar to the chair you are sitting in now faces the glass panes.

There's a small fountain in the center of the room.

Take my hand.
Continue into the kitchen through an archway hidden in a corner. You notice that it's small and used to be decorated in a Italian food theme. Now, it looks worn down. You suppose it's the child that's keeping it in such a way.

Head over to the window above the sink. Outside, you can see the rising slope of a green hill. There's a swingset at the top, rusty and old. It creaks with baited sighes in the wind.

You open the fridge because, c'mon, you're hungry. Instead of the stacks of Chinese takeout you'd expect from a young mother, you see a meticulously nutricious selection. Tomatos, apples, bread, milk; ugh.

Your appetite is gone.

Feel your heartbeat.
You walk back through the living room and up the staircase nestled to one side. It creaks in warning under your feet.

To be continued...
