So...when I go to get my first tattoo done, I'm imagining it'll hurt rather like a fork in the eye, or the sunburn I had two years ago (That scarred ) on my stomach. I know it'll hurt a LOT, at least - and I'd like to prepare to minimise that if at all possible.
I imagine I'll have a bevy of morally supportive friends there, but I was wondering - is it kosher to request being able to listen to music via headphones, or is that a bit rude? It's just, music is something I'd be able to concentrate on to stop me chewing through my lip, and if it's acceptable, I'd like to be able to listen to some songs. I suppose it would depend on the artist...
Also, would anyone be able to hazard a guess at how long a life-size cat pawprint would take to tattoo, in solid black?

I listen to music every time I get a tattoo. It's not rude or anything, as long as you listen when they try to talk to you.
It shouldn't take that long since it has no shading or anything. Under an hour.

Usually they play music, but when i get mine done they play heavy thrash or watch television.
And they wont turn it off since the guys who tattoo me are jackasses.

I think as long as you keep one of the headphones out, it should be fine. Normally they try to keep up a conversation to keep your mind off it. My artists usually let you play your own music on their big system, but it's really not that big a deal for me, since we have pretty similar musical tastes. xp

Most artists are too busy concentrating on their work to really want to have a deep conversation with you anyway, so I don't see why they wouldn't let you have your headphones. Explain to them that you're nervous and that this would make you feel more comfortable. I am sure they'd oblige. ^_^
