Hey guys. I'm Felice. I come around here now and then, but I don't post much, so you might not recognize me.
Anyway, I have a problem that I hope you horsey-folk can help me with.

I've taken lessons for a pretty long time, at least over 6 years... but they've been pretty irregular and spaced out, so my riding hasn't improved at a very fast rate. So recently I started riding at a hunter barn. And I've come to the realization that the reason I'm terrible at jumping is that I have no confidence.


I think I lack confidence because of how little I ride- I don't have a horse, and I can't afford lessons all the time. I really want to become a more confident rider, but I don't know how to do that without a horse to ride. I can't just hop on a horse after a month without riding and start going over jumps. I used to be decent at jumping, but now I can barely make it over a simple X. And the more I try and am humiliated in lessons, the more discouraged I become.

So, I was hoping for some tips? It's not as simple as telling yourself to be more confident- I wish it was. Is there anyway to be a less timid rider without riding regularly?

Well, since you don't get to ride a whole lot, it wouldn't be easy. Try not to think about the possibility of getting hurt. Just completely block it out of your mind and ride like you can't fall off. Riding a really easy-going horse always helps, too.

Sometimes the easiest way to relax, and gain confidence is to have a full understanding and acceptance's that falling off happens...and if it does (God forbid) that you can be resilient enough to get back on and show you trainer and horse that 'hey I may fall sometimes, but that doesn't mean I cant get back on.'

Another thing could be if you ride the same horse regularly then maybe you can flat for a while. Use cavalletis, and ground poles to get used to the basic jumping feeling. Once your confident over those, and can easily pick you distances (lengthen shorten stay the same) to poles and cavalettis then try small cross rails.

If you set your self up with the best foundation of fundamentals, that alone will give you the confidence and skill you need. Then all you have to do is connect the dots.

Sometimes confidence is as easy as trusting you trainer, and you horse enough.

Oh and I was going to clarify what I meant by lengthen, shorten, stay the same) You may know this just worded different. When you approach the jump theres always that ideal take off spot. Weather you have to lengthen, shorten, or maintain your stride to hit that spot without chipping, or having to take a huge distance is what I'm talking about.

And an easy way to practice this is by setting three or four poles, set ideally for the canter. And approach them counting (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,1,2,3 ect.) or you can sing row row row your boat for a medium stride, 99 bottles of bear for a longer stride, or twinkle twinkle little star for a shorter stride. About five stride before the first pole call out weather you think you need to lengthen shorten or stay the same then either hold, maintain, or press and see if your horse knocks a pole or makes it. This is a fun thing to test but over extending, and extreme shortening just to see how much horse you really have.

Oh and if you set up two sets of the four poles on the diagonal you could do a fun figure eight.
