It was a bright day in the city, but it was one of those type of days where no one notices the sun. The air felt thick and hazy and dampened everyone's mood. The towering skyscrapers seemed to steal the suns rays and left none for the ground. But no one noticed anyways; People were bustling down the wide sidewalks, and the cars were at a standstill. They went about their business - always in a rush. They never even noticed the scrawny, peculiar cat sneaking into the alley way.
Tarea scampered in the alley between two great apartment buildings; It was empty except a dumpster and some trash lying around. He was glad none of the humans had taken an interest in him. If there was one thing the tom hated more, it was humans. They always poked and prodded at his odd little horns. And then he always ended up doing something he regretted later. Tarea approached the green metal dumpster, sniffing around for something to snack on.

Toffie had been sleeping in the dumpster completly unware that another Tom had approched his turf. Not until the cat was in milimeters of his face did he finally wake up from his groggy sleep and pushed himself to the top of the trash pile. He opened a half dazed eye a banana peal resting on his head. 'Ello'. He took a yawn not even once taking notice to the strange horns resting ontop of the others cranium.
"You know- you woke me up from my nap..." He then opened the other eye lazily now noticing the yellow on his own head. Tossing it aside he now got a better gander at the other. Not making any sence of the horns absentmindly rubbed his head and pointed to the cat. "Seems you've been in the trash long before I was...You have something on your head my friend..." Again he rubbed his own furry head with a paw making sure the banana remenents were completly off his fur.

Tarea frowned and wiggled his whiskers. With all the people out on the streets, he really just wanted to be alone. And of course, he had the find the one alley with another tom. But Tarea had to be cautious; he was on someone else's turf which gave him a disadvantage. And although he wouldn't admit it, Tarea's small stature would leave him quickly in retreat if it came down to a fight.
But Toffie seemed polite, so Tarea had to make the best of it. "What are you talking about?" Tarea huffed. It was not until he reached up and felt his own furry head that he realized his companion was talking about his horns. He had almost forgotten that they were there. Almost. "Oh yeah.." was all he muttered, not quite sure how to tell Toffie it wasn't trash. The tom pretended to try to knock the "trash" off his head and the frown grew even deeper on his maw.

Toffie cocked his head not sure if he was seeing horns on the others head of if he was half asleep and dreaming still. He then propelled the rest of his body out of the trash and sat on an empty pizza box so he could get a better look at the cat infront of him. "Uh...that isn't trash is it?" He twitched his tail questioningly now perplexed by the others horns.
"Those are...those are...horns?" He cocked his head to one side stairing blanetly at the others head if it wasn't obvious enough that he had been looking at them in the first place. He then averted his eyes. "Thats cool...names Toffie by the way. I live in these dumps...havn't seen you around. You new here?"

Tarea dropped his paw and let it support his weight again. "Cool" was not a way he would describe his horns. A curse, freak of nature, yeah probably. But never cool. He snorted slightly. Obviously Toffie was making fun of him or trying to lure him into some trap. He furrowed his brow before answering the next question. "Not sure," he grunted. "I just woke up one day in an alley, don't really remember anything before that."

He could see the other cats reaction to him quite blantently. "No man I mean it as a compliment. I like your horns...you don't see things like that in the streets these days." He nodded. "I mean I wish I had something that made me stick out like that- hell I wouldn't have to eat out of the stinking garbage anymore." He stuck out his tounge. "This stuff sucks." He then got up and walked himself closer to the other cat; but still trying to give the other his personal space. Being a city cat he knew that other Tom's generally liked to fight.
The other cat didn't seam like he was trying to gain territory but he couldn't drop his gaurd. "Yea the alley thing happened to me too...I had humans...well my mom did. Then she had us and I woke up in an alley too with my siblings. They were lucky they all got homes. I was stuck being a stray on the streets. What'd I'd give for a good sniff of cat food..."

Now he was slightly confused. What did the other cat gain by making pettily conversation with him? Surely he wouldn't want to be his friend, that was unheard of for Tarea.
As he listened to Toffie, his mind wandered in thought. Huh, a mom and family? Tarea tried to reach his memories, but he couldn't remember anything before this city. Was that normal? "I haven't got a mom, I don't think.." He replied. The tom twitched his ears, "What's cat food? I that like rats and stuff?" He was intrigued.

"Well-" He said politly. "Everyones got a momma. Problem is humans dump you out on the street before you ever get a chance to remeber havin' one. I was one of the lucky ones I guess- havin' memories of my momma." He then stopped in mid sentance and thought about her. "She was a lovely cat. Nice to everyone...not like most of the strays you find out on the streets. Heart of Gold..." His face looked sullen as if he fell back in time thinking about her. Then suddenly snapped out of it like he woke up from a dream.
"Cat food? Well it's like a rat you don't have to catch. Something the humans cooked up so they don't have to hunt for us every night I suppose. Humans aren't the most lively bunch- or very bright. I doubt they could even catch a mouse if they tried." He chortled at his own joke inwardly. "If you ever manage to get close enough to a human to try it...don't pass it up."

"Hmmm." He could clearly see the other cat was affected by memories of his mother. But Tarea could not muster up any empathy for the tom. It wasn't as if he refused to, but Tarea had never lost anyone. He didn't even remember having anyone, so how could he feel grief? And although Toffie was sure Tarea had a family, the male wasn't so quick to believe so. Even though he couldn't remember a family, he was sure, that is he had one, he would at least know what it felt like to be loved and possibly a longing to find them. But his heart was empty.
In fact, other than a few scraps with some rival toms, Toffie was the first cat Tarea could remember he had met. It had only been a week or so ago when he awoke in the park, in this new strange land. His memories of before that were wiped.
He shook his head, as if he were trying to clear his thoughts. "Does every human carry cat food?" He questioned. If he were able to surprise attack a human, perhaps they would drop it.

"I wish..." He laughed again at that thought. "If all humans carried cat food life would be bliss don't ya think?" He held up some left over scraps that were obviously past it's due date. "Naw if every human held cat food I definatly would have better pickings then this. Sad truth is most humans hate cats." He winkled his nose again and almost tossed the scraps backwards.
"But I guess you'll learn that soon enough...since your new and all around here. Though you probally already figured that out on your way here."

"Hmm," He replied gruffly. "Luckily haven't much trouble with humans yet. They are mostly afraid of me." He quickly motioned to his horns. "Lucky from them, too." He added, a devilish half grin across his maw.
Tarea made a quick jump over to the pile of scraps thrown by Toffie. He squinched his nose and in one bite, lapped up the rotten bits of food. He settled down on his haunches and began grooming his face. "Can't let good food go to waste." He added a noisy burp at the end.
