Majel Roddenberry, first lady of "Star Trek," is dead at age 76

Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the widow of "Star Trek" creator Gene roddenberry and one of the few actors involved with the sci-fi television franchise throughout its four decades has died. She was 76.
Majel, an actress who appeared in many "Star Trek" TV shows and movies, beginning with the original series in 1966 died Thursday December 18th of leukemia at her home in Bel-Air, California.
Her romance with Gene Roddenberry - they married in 1969 - earned her the title "The First Lady of Star Trek." Gene cast Majel in the original series as Nurse Chapel. In addition to the nurse role, she portrayed "Number One" in the show's pilot episode, a part written out when NBC accepted the series bacause the network reportedly found the woman authority figure too unsettling. She played a recurring guest role, Lwaxana Troi, in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and was the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every spin-off. She recently reprised the voice role in the forthcoming "Star Trek" prequel film.
Majel Roddenberry also acted roles in the TV shows "Bonanza", and "The Lucy Show."

The only ones who may care about this news story are the Trekies. I pay my tribut to the First Lady. She was the best gosh damn Nurse Chapel, Lwaxana Troi, and USS Enterprise 1701-D computer there ever was. *Tosses salute.*

We are assembled here today to

pay final respects to our honored

dead.

And yet, it should be noted, that

in the midst of our sorrow, this

death takes place in the shadow of

new life, the sunrise of a new world,

a world that our beloved comrade

gave her life to protect and

nourish. She did not feel this

sacrifice a vain or an empty one -

and we will not debate her profound

wisdom at these proceedings.

-Stands in a salute-
-A gleaming black projectile is carried by pallbearers

into the launching chamber, which locks behind it. At

a hand signal from a torpedo man, the projectile is

fired-
-Long pause as a voice out of no where starts to speak-
Space, the final frontier... These

are the continuing voyages of the

Starship Enterprise... Her ongoing

mission: to explore strange new

worlds... to seek out new life and

new civilizations... To boldly go

where no man has gone before...

[ Though my knowledge of Star Trek has wavered over the years I thought it only right to have a Star Trek finally good bye. ]

((Well done, beautifully put.))

Amazing Grace is heard on bagpipes as the black projectile streaks out into space.
