Does anyone in this guild own the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN DVD? I am considering buying it since it is a movie on one of my favorite wars, the Crusades smile

I'm always a little leery of dramatizations of history - especially after the horrible job done on Braveheart and the Patriot. I heard that Kingdom of Heaven was extremely unbalanced, favouring the Muslim Army which was an invading army and portraying Saladin as a visionary leader, downplaying the terrible excesses of violence that went with the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land. You have to remember that the Holy Land was the centre of Christendom for 500 years before the emergence of Islam.
I hate when political correctness rewrites history. Read Hillaire Belloc's histories on the Crusades. You'll get a different picture and not one glamourised by Hollywood.

I never got a chance to see it in theaters, but I can't say I've heard good things about it. I've been told that while the battle scenes are good as always, it's very unaccurate and over dramatized. I'll probably rent it just to see how it is..

Yep, beats wasting $10 at the movies and wondering why you just wasted those two hours of your life.

I bought Kingdom of Heaven on DVD and I missed a few parts because of the phone... I have a question, who is the character in the movie that has that iron mask or whatever it is.....

King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, reigned from 1174 - 1185. He really was a leper having contracted the disease as a child.

Just a sidenote on how Hollywood twists things for the sake of an entertaining movie. Balian of Ibelin (protrayed by Orlando Bloom) was actually about 20 years older and married Baldwin's stepmother - very ambitious family, the Ibelins...

Oh, yes, my brother bought that DVD. I haven't seen the whole thing yet, but they have some awesome chainmaille in that movie. It's actually real. Usually they just put fake chainmaille in movies, but you can tell, that stuff is real. ^_^ Sorry, I'm a chainmaille fanatic.... razz

Words cannot describe how terrible that movie was. It was probably Ridley Scott's worst movie (though not quite as bad as GI Jane, but damn close). From Orlando Bloom changing his tunic consistently between different orders (as well as acting as the main role), to the knights pretty much just giving up halfway through the siege and happily handing Jerusalem to Saladin, the movie was full of inaccuracies and inconsistancies. The acting blew, too, and there could have been WAY more action (as Ridley Scott has given before).

Skip this one. Rent "Gladiator" instead.

Sorry, I toally disagree in almost everyway with the posting just before this one. The acting was good, by far Blooms best, at least in what I have scene him in. The action is great because it isn't over done and one scene were Balian takes his 100 calvary men against the giant Muslim calvary is amazing! The music is absolutely perfect for that scene just as when it cuts when the two forces meet, its brilliant! The story is good and though historically very inaccoriate(in so many ways it would take far to long to get them all) it is still a damn good movie that brings forth what we wish(this word is key) the Holy Land was like and could be one day. Which is place where all can worship without having to worry about predigest or getting killed. To bad that will probably never happen. And as for putting Saladin in a favourable light I think it was good, he was one of the few that had restraint.

Liam Neson rocks!

I thought it was a disappointing Crusades movie. It's full of inaccuracies historically and all around it's just a bad movie. Even Liam Neeson didn't act well and I'm a freaking fangirl. xp

I dont know about how historicaly acurate it was but the movie was horrible. Sure the action sequences were adverage but in between was a giant lull with what seemed like a big fat nothing in it.

Historically inaccurate, obviously. Then again, had it been more accurate, they would never have been able to make the movie (there's a lot of controversy over Islam these days. So show the Muslim army in anything close to a bad light would have been an instant red light).

The acting was blegh. Orlando Bloom isn't a particularly good actor to begin with and, to disagree with Caliesil, I thought he was miles better in Pirates.

The battle scenes were glorious, of course. But the rest of the movie didn't really have much substance. There were a few plot threads, but they didn't weave particularly well. This was a battle scene movie. The plot felt like it was just there as filler in between battles.

I don't think that I wasted my 2+ hours, but I certainly would have rathered spend it watching something else.
