It could happen, from what I understand, the anime ended at a point that could be expanded...but didn't the anime finish production some years ago? It's kind of late by now...

No, Takaya and the director have already said many times they do not want to do another series. This is due to the horrible flaw in it of AKito being made male and the fact that the anime was never anything special. It was just used to keep people occupied while she recovered from her injury and to pull in more fans. Even from the begining the manga was going to be the one to end it.
The paper cranes thing is just an attempt to get another series when it's jsut not possible and not what Takaya wants, not to mention they're sending it to the wrong people. Funimation has no power over the series, only Takaya does. She was disapointed with the anime and doesn't want to spend any more time on it creating a separate plot for it because of the assumptions made in it.
