My roommate is about a month pregnant, and is already having bad morning sickness, and other pains. She has a tilted uterus, and one of her vertebra is fused to her hip.

Does anyone have suggestions for what could calm the pain and sickness?

For the morning sickness, she should try eating smaller meals more often. Morning sickness is generally caused by an empty stomach. Also, although it sounds "trite" the crackers next to the bed thing really works. Eat a couple of saltines first thing on waking, it should help alleviate some of the nausea. The good news is that most morning sickness passes after the first trimester. smile

Your roommate sounds like she's in for a rough time with those complications. I'd recommend she drink some ginger ale and that if her vitamins make her sick (which mine always did) she could take flinstone vitamins instead and then take an extra calcium supplement or something. That's what I do, I take flinstones and then add the extra stuff I know I need and so I don't get sick from them. Also, if she uses a tincture of red raspberry leaf that's supposed to be helpful. She could set her alarm a little early too, so she doesn't have to get out of bed right away, sometimes letting your body wake up slowly helps. Ever since I've been pregnant I've mostly been snacking too. And she should take her vitamins at night, because then she won't feel so bad.

Thanks! I sent this advice to her.

I hope you don't mind, I quoted you, so that if she needs more info, she'll know who to look to.

There is a book called "no more morning sickness" or something similar to that. It helped me a lot when I had hyperemesis (severe morning sickness causing excessive weight loss and dehydration). Ginger is known to be an antinauseant so I sucked on a lot of ginger candy and ate ginger snaps. It is given or was given postpardom by my midwife until both of us ran into information saying it thins the blood (I think?) and I thought during a time of heavy bleeding I would not want to be taking it LOL. So I opted for other things instead. Saltines made me nauseous. But eating a tiny bit of something bland did help me if I ate before I ever even got out of bed.
There are some homeopathic remedies that I was too scared to try when I was pregnnat. I don't like trying new things while gestating and there wasn't enough research available to make me comfortable. But I have also heard those motion sickness bracelets tend to help nausea too. I heard about the bracelets after my babies were born so I'm not sure how true it is or not.
Hope she feels better soon!

Poor SFD. crying Ginger candies *will find a recipe in a bit* might help, and my mom swears by pepmint tea and crackers. She lived on them with me.

Raspberry tea is great for strengthening the uterine muscles, allowing delivery to go a bit smoother. Ginger and peppermint are practically legendary for their anti-nausea properties. And Nemone's right on with the extra vitamins and calcium type stuff. Not going to help her feel better, but it takes care of her and her baby over the long run.

Anyone know if Echinacea would be harmful to the baby?

Sunfire's been coughing and feeling like a cold is coming on, and I'd like to offer it, but I don't know if it'd be alright.

Also, she's been throwing up a lot, and not able to hold anything down. I told her what you've told me, so we'll see if that helps.

I seem to remember hearing negative on echinacea and pregnancy but I could be wrong. There's a book that may help called "The Nursing Mother's Herbal" by Sheila Humphrey (sp?). It's more about breastfeeding but I seem to remember it discussing herbs in pregnancy as well.
HTH

p.s. I'd look it up for you but alas that is one book I have yet to add to my bookshelf as it seems to sell out rather quickly. crying

As she gets closer to her due date she should try adding a single tea cup a day of raspberry leaf tea. It is supposed to help immensly with her labor and muscular contractions, and healing times afterward.

My roomate is 5 months now and she is having a boy - has anyone here heard of the food gender test? I hear that if you crave spicy it is a boy, and blander foods, a girl.

Sounds a little crazy but maybe it's true? PM me if anyone has heard of this

LOL I found out 3 weeks ago that I'm pregnant and I've been craving dill pickle chips! So far I'm 7 weeks along and the morning sickness is getting worse by the day. xp My first doctor's appointment isnt' until March 7th, so I'm kinda winging it 'till then with info from websites and here, of course.

Besides Parsely, what are herbs to avoid during pregnancy? Oh, and aromatherapy/essential oils as well, if anyone knows.

Yay congratulations!

Hm... probably avoid anything that stimulates uterine contractions, like false unicorn root, black or blue cohosh, and raspberry. I've heard raspberry can be safe if taken in moderation, but I've also heard against it, so do some research on that one.
