Nintendo sweeped through the park, his bag of goodies and his new ring clenched in his talons. "JOEEEE!" He shouted. "OH JOEEE!" He cried, fluttering about. There was a meow and a large tabby cat clambered onto the low brick wall on the park perimeter. Nintendo smiled and landed right beside it.

Yield of Green followed closely and dutifully after the thieving mongrel that would now take her back to her long lost Oxford. That is, she followed him faithfully until she saw the cat. Alarm showed obviously as she wheeled to the right slightly and perched on a fence post just near the cat and the thief. Her eyes were wide and her feathers were sleeked and she made a rather worried coo.

"You! Mister! Get out of there!"

The cat meowed and blinked down at Nintendo, who dropped the ring and the sacks, pushing them towards the huge feline. The cat looked at them, sniffing, then looked at Yield and meowed. Nintendo flared his wings and shook his head.

The cat snorted and nodded, jumping back off the fence with the sack. Nintendo turned. "Its alright, Yield. Joe is very friendly."

"Cats eat birds." Was her single, shaky response. She had been through so much already this day and her poor heart felt like it couldn't take anymore! She puffed her feathers out and closed her eyes in fear.

"I have a little one to take care of. I'll stay up here, thank you. She already only has one parent to watch over her. The last thing I want is her to be an orphan." Her words rang with a steadfast determination. The poor little pidge was not yet old enough to fend for herself and Yield would care for her until Pebble was ready to move on. She couldn't die before then.

For the first time, nintendo's eyes rolled as he waited for the cat to return. Joe hopped onto the fence again. "Joe has no nails." Nintendo informed the other bird as the tabby dropped a bag of seeds at the pidge's feet. Nintendo nodded and then flapped into the air once more, landing on the fence post. "besides, these seeds aren't for me. they're for the chicks at the flock."

"A cat with no nails is still dangerous. They have teeth." She shot back, but her voice had softened considerably as she watched the behemoth furball drop the bag of seeds near Nintendo. So the seeds were for the little ones? Still, there had to be a more honorable way of earning food, without resorting to thieving. She always worked hard to make her way and had all the other pidge she had known.

"Really, now? Ah, well, don't want them to wait for their dinner." There was a nervous tint to her voice as she stretched out her wings.

He turned to her. "Old Joe has been my trader for months now. I trust him with my life...and I do, every time we meet." He patted his ocarina. "If he gets out of hand, my music usually calms him right down." He sniffed as he weighed the bag in one claw. "Yes, well, let's get home then." he said.

He paused, suddenly. "Um..." he blinked at her long and hard. "can you fly by ear?" he asked.

"Fly by ear?" She tilted her head slightly at the thief's curious question. Of course, she would do whatever it took to find her beloved Oxford again, all the distance in the world wouldn't deter her, because all she had to do was to follow this oddly hued male.

And, of course, put blind trust in him that he will take her where she needed to go.

He sighed. "Nevermind...its no big deal." he paused. "Before we go, you have to promise me something." He leaned in close to her. "Stay close to me. My flock is at war with itself...and there are some pidge there that even I do not trust. Rogues...wander too far and they'll be on you like stink on a seagull. And...don't land in the little space under the tracks..." he gulped. "Mesa lives there."

Her snowy feathers sleeked again, as they had done when she first saw the feline that Nintendo Gamecube so affectionately called Trader Joe.

"At war with itself? Which flock is it that you belong to?" She couldn't help but to be curious about the entire ordeal. "And who is Mesa?"

"I live in a train station..its pretty old. We have a leader named half-price...half price's dad was an amazing leader..." he gulped. "but...the place split in half when half-price took over. half of us are snobby tea makers and refined elegants. Big wigs and fops and all that gull s**t." he glared. "And then there's us...we're the half that has literally nothing but our wits and eachother. We are the gypsies and we steal to live. The chicks need seeds...i steal, i trade the goods and I give the seeds to our resident Nanny, Spencer's Gifts. He gives that to all the chicks."

He paused. "Mesa's one of my group, but she's a wild girl. She'll rob a pidge of all his feathers if they ticke her fancy. Selfish, too! She never shares her finds and she gets agressive when we even LOOK at them." He sighed. "I steal because I have to. She steals because she likes it."

"Half-Price, huh?" She mused over the rather unsettling information that he gave her. It was a shame that it boiled down to that... Thievery to support the life of the young ones. She felt some pity in her heart as she shifted her wings in preparation for flight.

"You hardly hear anything about that flock... It's surprising to hear how poorly it is doing."

"That's why I didn't want to take you there. Oxford is......he's awful. He hits on every she-pidge he finds. He's got some floozy fling going on for him right now." he said, taking flight.

She held her beak tight and turned her eyes downward, towards the ear below, as she flew after the thief. She didn't want to believe him, she couldn't believe him.

Oxford still loved her. He just got lost. That's right. He got lost while out looking for food and couldn't find his way back. That's what she'd been telling herself for the past couple of seasons.

"You're lying." She muttered bluntly, but the wavering uncertainty could easily be heard in her unsteady voice.

"I'm an honest pidge." he said. "a thief, but honest. You'll see when we get there." he said, looking at her sadly. His ocarina made a low whistling noise as he flew away from the wall and to the rustic and old side of town.
