“I suppose it’s high time I told you all about my story. My tale of hardships and misfortune.” Blizzy huffed softly, folding her legs underneath her as her breath solidified to ice vapor as it always did. “I was never the frosty, powerful, dragon hybrid you see before you. I was once Blizzard, a name given by my deceased mother, a little girl scared of her own shadow and cried at the misfortunes of others…”
“You still do.” Blaze pointed out, frowning in confusion.
“Shush. This is my monologue.” Blizzy swatted at him frustratedly, turning herself back to her audience.
“I was never given a chance to grow up in the dragon temple like my contemporaries. Grandpa thought it’d be best for a gentle flower like myself to be raised away from violence. In other words, he thought I was weak ‘cause I didn’t show signs of any element. So did my foster parents, they tried to drown me in education to make me forget how weak I was compared to everyone else…” she looked away, recalling the small area she grew up in. “I grew up in a small place devoid of city life. It was like one of those picturesque villages you’d see on post cards. Small huts, cows and livestock everywhere, kids tinkering with outdated American goodies… Stuff like that. But not me. I had my nose in the books and my head in the clouds. I wanted to be like… Well, like Blaze-san. He had fire powers and spent more time doing what he liked.” She sneered, glaring at her brother.
“Not like I don’t love ‘im. We saw each other at least weekly, often coming by when I finished classes and sketched from time to time. He always had a new way to flip through trees from his monkey family and I had a new historical event to teach him. Not that he remembered who or what happened in the past, and I couldn’t remember what he did and found myself crashing into the ground. So I studied a bit of physics… Rather, motion. All those kinetics and newtons confused the hell outta me. I just needed to know for every reaction there’s another one, ne?” She looked off into the distance. “I practiced moving through the forest, dodging trees and learning to keep speed. I could jump off trees after a couple years, and when I was eight I was running errands between neighboring villages, mailing parcels and whatnot because I could move quicker through the forest. It was all I could do; I had no cool elemental power. Well, not until that one day I got mad. Real mad.”
Blizzy gritted her teeth as she drew small circles in the air. “I was upset that I didn’t have an element. I mean, why call me Blizzard if I had no element? Even so, I’d show signs of being a fire elementalist, why give me the name Blizzard? I feared I’d be like Haze – Oh, that’s my brother who killed my mom, by the way – and then no one would want to be around me. Well, regardless I hardly had any friends. It was hard enough I had bullies who just loved the sound of me crying. Blaze would help out, fending them off when he was around, but when he wasn’t, I had to stick up for myself. One day… There was this one guy, and he definitely ate his Wheaties… Twice my size and three times as mean. I had this icee… Blue raspberry flavored. He knocked it out my hand and then pushed me into it. I remember the frosty goodness melting up my nose and against my face, mingled with mud, saliva, and tears. I cried but all the kids laughed. They laughed, and laughed, and laughed…” A large ice sickle chipped into formation in her hand, the bladed tip digging into the ground. “And I just got mad. The next thing I knew I put my hand in the melted gush and thought of a dagger to stab him with. And – like magic – it was like the fluid listened to me and turned into a bluish-brown blade. Except it was cold, like… Ice. I had frozen it, and instead of turning to stab him, I stared dumbfounded.”
“ Then I stabbed him. Hehe.”
“Anyway, the kids saw this and turned their mindless bullies into hostile attacks. I was a freak now. Forget my intelligence; I could turn water into ice. I could fight back now. I was an actual opponent.”
“ And for that moment, I loved every minute I saw the cold fear in their eyes. That was payback enough for me.”
“ They avoided putting fluid by me, but little did they know I carried some bottles of water on me if things got too bad. Eventually I just separated myself from them all, spent most of my time in the forest. My foster parents didn’t like it too much, what with wild animals out there just itchin’ for their next meal. I didn’t care, I could defend myself. I practiced my ice powers, and eventually got to the point where I could make just one bottle of water stretch me for a fight. I told Blaze-san, and Grandpa began visiting more often. He acted like he was just checking up on me, but I’m not stupid. He just showed interest in me ‘cause I could do s**t. But I respected him and often left after sharing a few brief words with him. Blaze-san didn’t like it too much…”
“When I turned ten, a few strands of my hair turned a really bright blue. I could turn ice into knives, spears, blades, short swords, basically nothing over half my size. Most of the things I did were either by accident or took a lot of focus, and often I found myself freezing things or people by thought. Besides, things I made could stay in that form and not melt as long as I touched it. When I let it go it turned back into water. It didn’t help if I wanted to throw snowballs or something. It seemed like from that point on I couldn’t get any better.”
A tiny lizard-like dragon crawled out of the curve of her turtleneck, and Blizzard kissed its muzzle. “I was going through the forest one day when I heard a shrill sound. There was a blue lizard nearby being attacked by a few birds. It looked just like a plain old lizard except it was light blue and colder than any cold-blooded creature I ever felt. It was bloody and battered, and I went over to help. I used some water to make a couple spears and stabbed at the birds until they left it alone. It looked really hurt and I picked it up and took it with me. Since I couldn’t find any other place to put it, I tucked the lizard underneath the neck part of my turtleneck. My parents thought it was sweet, but didn’t like the whole wild animals in the house. It was a miracle they allowed Blaze-san to visit.”
“Hey!” Her brother jabbed her in the side, and in return she pushed him away.
“Anyway, it turns out that lizard was actually a dragon baby – the ice dragon king’s to be exact. One of Derryll’s little kids was on the brink of death, and I managed to get to it in time. I read about him in some mythology books. After a while I named it Snowflake. Flakey followed me everywhere, and when trouble came around it slid down my shirt. I had to keep wearing turtlenecks to make it feel at home. It was a little troublesome when the weather was warm and eventually I got used to it. But it was a mischief-maker. I learned it was just like me – the baby dragon could use ice powers but control it better than I could with mine. Snowflake would sneak off and freeze things just to mess with people. It was funny until I was blamed for it. Which caused more fights… And more frozen faces and bloody noses… So I had to let it go after a while, but we played in the forest instead. Snowflake seemed to help me focus on my ice manipulation, and soon enough I could throw snowballs and they wouldn’t melt for a little while. As the years went by my hair turned blue up front. When I hit thirteen Snowflake had become the size of a small house cat. But it could take down a bobcat if given the chance. One day it led me further into the forest, down to a place I haven’t been before – and I knew that forest inside and out. There was a dank cave, and Snowflake kept tugging me towards it.”
“Did you go in?” Blaze asked, his head resting in his hands.
“Hell yes. What kind of warrior would I be if I let some cave stop me?”
“A sissy one!”
“Damn right. At any rate, I went inside, and I found on the other side was a valley. In the middle there was a tall mountain, covered in snow. The area was cold, there was hail… It was like perpetual winter. No sun, just frozen tundra. Creatures of all kinds still lived in this place – the clawed, fanged, I-will-kill-you kind. Right off the bat me and Snowflake had to run for our lives, and I had to go where Flakey followed. Beasts scratched at my arms, some bit and were going for limbs, but they seemed to leave my dragon buddy alone.”
“I was chased up the mountain, higher and higher until the land creatures were nothing but speckles in the snow. Since that was over with, now I had flying beasts to flee from. One thing I wasn’t expecting – and would’ve been my downfall – was a wild yeti that came at me like a bat outta hell. Naturally I freaked out and ran the opposite way; this was a real live yeti. Seriously… What the hell, man. Snowflake tried to help me out of the situation by distracting the beast, but it wouldn’t change course. I found myself being cornered in between a snow beast and a two mile drop. I accidentally took the latter, my shoes slipping on the ice and causing me to plummet to my death. I could remember screaming and seeing Snowflake watch helplessly as I landed in the unforgiving snow.”
“You would think that’d be the end for me, but I could remember feeling myself wander around. I was in this place; all I could see was a thick fog of gray and beacons of bleak light through the haze… I walked around in what I assumed was the afterlife until I felt something forcefully bringing me back. It brought me back to my body, a peaceful little preteen lying lifelessly in the snow, overshadowed by a giant beast. A powerful dragon, it was king of all the creatures in his area. Nothing attacked me, rather my dead body, while it guarded me. I remember seeing its dual horns, a beak-like snout with giant crushing fangs, dark eyes shadowed by giant scale eyebrows… No seriously, his eyebrows were huge!”
“…He was king Derryll. He resurrected me."
Next to its feet I saw Snowflake running up to me. Rather, to my soul that was me. It leaped into my arms and I held to it. Our souls merged, and I could feel the coldness of the great ice dragon descendant enter into my being. My soul began its metamorphosis.”
“I woke up from it all like it was some warped dream. I was in another cave, this one lit with torches and filled with human riches – pictures, relics, gold… Derryll kept all offerings people in neighboring villages given to him. He had taken me in under his wing from that point on. Because I took care of its offspring he gave Snowflake to me to revive me with its life. Snowflake and I are one, and after practice I was able to take on different dragon aspects. I could sprout ice wings, tails, horns… I could even become full dragon if I put all of my focus into it. But Derryll also helped me learn how to use my ice powers up to how I use them now. I spent years with him in his land learning the way of the dragon. Even the creatures who once attacked me now bowed at my feet. I was like them yet not at the same time. It was a daunting change, but don’t get me started on how we learn to fly…” She groaned, cringing. “Derryll just pushed me off the edge again and let nature run its course…”
“I learned how to fight, to use the ice in battle, to make different things out of ice without melting for long periods of time; I could even shield myself with dragon ice. It’s more durable than normal frozen water and could even last through certain degrees of heat. It came up useful any time Blaze-san felt like sparring. Eventually I went back to my village; I could go through the cave portal as much as I pleased now that I was part dragon. Blaze-san missed me, so did my foster parents. But when I told them about what happened and showed them what I could do, they finally thought I was ready to go to the temple. Grandpa agreed, and then talked about how proud he was of me. A few years ago he was eager to get rid of me because of Nii-san, er, Haze, and probably thought I’d be another one who’d be out to get him or be element-less and useless. But I’m not. I’m Chaos-damn-Blizzard and I’m here to own some a**!”
“s**t yeah!” Blaze said in agreement, throwing a fist in the air.
“I was almost sixteen when I finally returned to the temple. My bangs and the front quarter of my hair turned blue. On my birthday Derryll paid me a visit. I told him that this was my home, and I asked him to travel with me. Another one of his kids became of age to monitor his kingdom; Prince Chasm I think was his name… I know it started with a ‘C.’ He agreed and he showed me his ability to shapeshift. He can turn his body frame into any kind he pleases – human, cat, horse, snake… Because his body is essentially frozen moisture, he can change as much as he wants, when he wants. He takes lizard form on travel, and his usual dragon form when transporting me around. I can’t really shapeshift, because I’m still part human and not really an Omega class elementalist. But once I hit seventeen I was an Alpha! Grandpa even let me train some students in the way of the ice element. It was fun, except for the occasional whiners in the group, saying my methods were animalistic…”
“You are part dragon, you know. I think it comes with the character…” Leroy inputted.
“Where’d you come from?” Blizzard asked, frowning.
“Over there. You were telling your story so loudly it disrupted me from my teaching.”
“Shut up air head!”
“Make me, ice queen!”
“Um, guys…” Blaze said softly, putting his hand up.
“Keep out of this!” The two shouted, turning their focus to Blaze.
“Who even asked for your opinion anyway?” Blizzard sneered, pushing Leroy away.
“Maybe if you didn’t talk so loud I wouldn’t feel the need to.” The wind elementalist stepped back, readying to push her back before his arm disconnected from his body and floated away. “No! Not again!”
Chuckling, Blizzard gave a justified smirk and turned back to her audience. “Well, that’s my story, not much has changed for me except I have friends now… And Leroy. Grandpa is dead, my foster parents are fine, and most of the kids back at the village respect me now that I’m a sensei at the temple. I guess one could say life is pretty darn good to me.”
“Guys… Seriously… Help me get my arm back…” Leroy asked as he chased after his floating appendage. “This ain’t funny anymore! That’s my fourth arm today!”
