My latest cosplay project is Zane Truesdale from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
The clothes and the gear i can handle, but his hair...hmmm?
This will be my first cosplay that involves a wig.
I need to style it!
I've read a tutorial, but the whole process seems tricky.
Does anyone have any advice or any links that i could use.
I am inspired by the Cosplays of Malindachan, so you don't need to bring her up, i'm already obssessed with her works!

Thanks for reading!

Get a thick wig. One with a LOT of hair. Get it a little longer than it should be, too, so it's a bit easier to trim into spikes. I'd suggest clumping the potential spikes together with hair gel, then cutting it into a triangular shape after. Though I'm not the best to ask. ^^; I tried making a Cloud wig, and it came out really MEH. > : The wig had thin hair, though, which made it harder. Thus, get one with a lot of hair.

Good luck. XDDD

Where are tbest placeo buy wigs.
Pary Shops? Or Proper Wig shops.
And since it might be quite hard to fins a good quality dark green/blue wig, should i buy a long, thick, blonde wig and then spray paint the finished wig?

DON'T spray paint the wig. i've had several friends that did that and it was not good!!! if you can't find dark green/blue, black would work, too.

before you do any cutting to the wig, pull out the front clumps and rubberband them together. these will eventually be the bangs. do the same for the side hair. then, choose a side to work with. i would suggest leaving the bangs for last. i would suggest cutting the hair a little longer than it seems to be needed. you can all ways trim it up later. it is better to be too long than too short.

i would also suggest you have a friend help you out holding the wig head. it makes life A LOT easier. also, only use the gel for the end of the spikes. if you use it for the whole thing, it weighs it down, and often time the spike will go flat. you can use heavy duty hair spray. that stuff, if you get the right stuff (i don't know my brand name), is like glue.

Don't use hair gel on a wig at all, actually. It's formulated to work with natural oils in real hair that just aren't there in a wig. It will not work.

When you're looking for products to use to sculpt your wig, look specifically for hair glue rather than hair gel. The Got 2 B line is a good brand that I've had quite a bit of success with.

I also second not spray-painting. You also don't need to bother trying sharpies or watered-down acrylic paints or any of those old costuming wives' tales for coloring wigs that you've probably heard. If you absolutely cannot find a wig that is close enough to your desired color for your satisfaction, look into wig dye.

Wigs can be a tough nut to crack. I'm still working on well and truly cracking it, myself. Have patience with yourself. It takes practice.

On top of what xinitia and Berz said, don't be afraid to take time with it. Wig products take time to set. When you're cutting the wig, only cut a little bit at a time, and don't forget to try the wig on to make sure that it fits with your face. Chances are your head is bigger than the wig head.

Spray painting or using any of those hairspray products to dye a wig won't work. Well, they WILL color your wig, but it'll look like crap, and it'll smell really bad. You won't be able to use it, and it'll probably eat away at the fibers of the wig. So even if you could get it to work somewhat, it won't last very long.

You *can* however, make cheap wig dye by taking a spray bottle, filling it with alcohol (the 70% kind) then inserting black and blue sharpie ink tubes inside. You will need a few bottles, and you'll have to let it sit for a week or so to fully absorb the ink. However, this works more like a "tint" instead of a full dye job. I used this method to match light pink extensions to a hot pink wig with pretty good results. However, if you're going to try and dye a blonde wig to blue, it's just not going to work. I'd suggest using this on a blue wig. The red-purple tones in the black sharpie ink, should get a color close to your reference.

There's also a type of bottled ink that you can use, but I don't remember exactly what it's called. x_x Some friends of mine that do amazing wig work use it all the time. But it's basically the same process as using sharpie ink.

Unfortunately, most "walk-in" type wig stores usually carry natural colors. You may want to actually look online for a wig.

Avoid getting a costume shop cheapie. You're better off going without a wig. For that wig you're going to look for something at least $25-$35.

I buy mine from:
http://amphigory.com/
(since they're located in indiana, which is a state away, shipping is SUPER fast)
http://cosworx.com
(takes about a week to arrive, but they have a nice selection)

You'll want to look for a wig with bangs. You can easily style them using a low-temprature blow dryer and a cheap can of hairspray. If you have to cut anything, I suggest cutting it with a razor (the cheap kind with the handle that you use to shave). Scissors tend to leave really ugly cutting marks if you don't know what you're doing.

There's some other products you can use, like Got2bGlued, and there's a kind that comes in a big can/bottle thing. Things like gels won't do anything to a wig besides goop it up and make it look saggy and ugly. Hairspray works like a charm though. But stay away from using anything BUT a blowdryer to heat-style a wig. Anything else will melt the fibers.

You can make do with a costume shop wig, it's just difficult and takes A LOT of patience.

It kinda depends on the wig though. I have a few wigs that I bought from a costume shop. The fibers are sewn in a bit thicker than usual. They're not so much stringy or thick-fishing wire type fibers. So I used it for one costume for a few years without any difficulties. But usually, the ones you get around Halloween time are really poor quality and hard to work with. .__. Plus they usually look terrible in photos. A nice looking wig can cover for not that great sewing. A bad looking wig can make a nice costume look really bad. XD So sometimes it's just better to go the extra mile and get something you know you'll get good results from.

I second that. Costume shop wigs tend to suck really hard.
