Black Mesa sat on the tracks that split the roost in two parts. She was admiring the little purple band on her leg in a puddle between two pieces of track wood. She had seen the other pidge with bands, but she had never seen a purple one. She giggled giddily.

It had been perfect. She had seen a group of young pidge from Happy Hour's flock playing with the small band- it was the broken base of a fairy light. She had stolen it, literally taking candy from a baby. She had left the babes crying and the mothers confused to what had just happened. Mesa was a master of speedy getaways.

She was also vain. She stared into the puddle, examining her leg once more with a smirk.

"Mind you don't break the puddle." a cool voice said behind her. Mesa whiped around as Nintendo Gamecube stared down at her, his ocarina dangling from his neck.
She gave a sigh. "You scared me, Nintendo." she muttered.
He shook his head. "Stealing from the little ones again?" he asked, noting her leg band. His had been given to him as payment for a song on the ocarina.
"Mind your business!" she hissed, flaring her wings. Even though she was a member of 'the band', she rarley got along with him. He was too charming, too weak in the heart. He would not steal from chicks and he would not steal from the old or weak. Her moral was 'what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine.'

Nintendo sighed once more. "I'd love to stay here and bother with you more, but I have mouths to help feed." He took to the air again, out for a night of theiving. She watched him go, then snorted and went back to looking at herself in the water.

Between watched the exchange from under the platform, her bright eyes riving over the thieves. She may not like Nintendo most of the time, but at least she knew he didn't steal from younglings. As one of very few scavengers on the poor side of the tracks, she found thieving a bit distasteful, and preferred to get things honestly. The undersized slate pidge scuttled out and over to the puddle.

If Mesa had a problem with her coming over to get some water, she could get over it. Tween tried to be pleasant to all pidge, no matter who they were, or what they did.

Mesa glared as the slate took up the reflection space in the puddle and made the water ripple. She stared at her long and hard, eyes narrowing. She clicked her beak agressivly and fluffed herself. "Excuse me, you're ruining my mirror and making it shrink."

She knew the scavenger and rolled her eyes. She despised their honest and good-willed method. It was less effective and took more time. She used her wing and dusted her anklet as if cleaning the slate's presence off of it.

"Oh, I'm ever so sorry! How can I ever make it up to you?" Slight sarcasm touched Tween's voice. She'd had a long day and it may have taken longer, but she'd brought in just as much as some of the thieves. She enjoyed the work, and it made less enemies among the pidge from other flocks. The scavenger smiled sweetly at the thief, her eyes only slightly narrowed.

"You can drop the tone, followed by getting out of my sight!" Mesa hissed, beak parting and eyes going incredibly thin, wings flaring.

"How about not. I've just as much right to be here as you do.You were the one who started out being unpleasant. I'm sorry about my tone, but you did start it." The slate drew herself up, her feathers puffing out. She might be nice, but she didn't have to put up with this. Mesa was no better than her, and she certainly wasn't any better than the thief.

She glared and flared her wings up. "You're no better then those tea makers who invite Nintendo over to play like some common passeridae!" she shouted agressivly, hissing and taking a step forwards. She sneered darkly. "Now go find something so I can steal it, goody two-shoes!"

Between just watched the thief calmly as she became agressive."And you're worse than a chick who hasn't gotten her own way. What of it?"

The scavenger hadn't put up with everything thus far, just to be intimidated by a thief who viewed herself as somehow better than her.

Black Mesa flared her wings once more and let out a long hiss. She was not going to let this scavanger make her feel inferior! She began to flap her wings, sending up a gust, ready to attack, when something sort of crashed into her.

Nintendo stood, glaring, beak clicking. "Mesa, leave the girl be! She's done nothing wrong!"
Mesa rolled to her feet. "WHAT THE HELL, NINTENDO, I THOUGHT YOU LEFT!"
""Let's just say my Mesa sense was tingling." he growled. "You know Half-Price is gunna get pissed if us gypsies start fighting."
"She started it by crowding me!"
"Find another puddle then. You reacted. A scuffle starts with two parties, Mesa."
"Screw off." Mesa hissed as she, and her stolen band, fluttered away.
Nintendo glared after her before turning to the girl.

"Sorry about her. She's not so bad when you crack her exterior shell. She always acts so tough, but she looks like an idiot." He dipped his head for a drink. "Her moral fiber has been out of balance since Half-Price's dad died..he was a good leader." He sighed. He then paused. "Oh, how embarassing. I'm Nintendo Gamecube, by the way. And that was Black Mesa. Its nice to meet you."

Tween sighed, fluffing out her feathers once Mesa was gone. She turned to Nintendo with a cross between a sheepish and rebellious expression. "None of us is better than any of the others, though. And I could've dealt with her... maybe."

Even though she was small for a slate, she was still close to the same size as most coffee and foggy pidge. "I'm Between The Lines... I think my parents had some sort of odd sense of humor when they named me that. And believe me, I remember... Pleasure to actually meet you, I suppose."

Nintendo lifted his wing and began to preen under it. "She fights dirty." he said. "She'd never hurt her close friends, but I've seen her peck eyes and throw up dustclouds. No doubt she'd cheat to beat you." he said softly, looking at where she had flown to.

"You from our side of the tracks or are you from the higher ups?" he asked. "In either case...It'd be best to avoid her from now on."

"I haven't lived on the lower side all my life without learning to expect that sort of thing. Do I look like one of the uppity side, anyway?" She hunkered down slightly, frowning. "Close friends... hmph."

Tween tended to keep to herself, mostly. "I hate this flock... Everything's just not right."

"since our old leader died, you're right. half-price is too young and....simple minded to run this flock properly." he shook his head. "to make things worse, i have to perform on their side, like a clown. i play at their bustling parties...but i make good tips." he chuckled. "they don't protect their shinies well enough."

The scavenger sighed, fluffing out her feathers again. "S'terrible they make you do that..."

Maybe she'd misjudged Nintendo in general, but she had seen how he acted toward the upper-sides in the past. Not quite pleasant in the least. Tween cocked her head, glancing at him from the corner of her eye. "If you'd really thought I was from the other side of the tracks, would you have stopped her?"

He turned. "Its terrible but it has its benefits from time to time." he said. "i do get to drink tea and eat fine food on my break..." he shivered.

When she asked, he paused. "No. But I would have called someone to come help you when she was done. Its not like Mesa would ever kill a pidge. She wants them to suffer, not die."
