A lot can change in ten years. Some are born, some mature, some die. Time affects everything, turning ignorance to wisdom, weakness to strength. Like a river, it flows in a single direction, carrying you along.

The Yami has had these tens years to grow stronger, not only in numbers but in inner strength and unity. Its leader has had time to change himself into a far better leader than he was before. Reunited with his sister, the regrets of his past have all but vanished, and he is able to focus on the future and act according to reach what the land needs: a better shogun. He still lacks any intention of taking the responsibility upon himself, but he hopes that a suitable candidate will come forward, as the shogun has no male heir to take his place. But what of a female one? That, the shogun has. And if the shogun is killed, will she be a better leader than the man who took her on as though his daughter?

"Oji-sama..." Yuuka's steady voice was surprising calm as it snuck out from between the arms she was currently nestling her head in. "I understand that it is important for a leader to be seen in public so that his people do not feel distant from him, but..." She finally picked her head up to give him an almost begging look. "Did it have to be kabuki?" They were in a private balcony box, so she wasn't worried about the 'people' overhearing her. "It's totally boring, I have no idea what's going on, and that dude just kissed that other dude!" She threw her hands up in exasperation. "I get that the other one's pretending to be a girl, but that just makes it even more weird." Yuuka, did not enjoy kabuki. Normal theater was okay, because it was just like telling a story, but kabuki... Well, it just seemed like it was trying to hard to be fancy, and ended up just looking stupid. Her face buried itself in her arms again. "Whyyyyy?" She whined in the tone all teenagers use.

"Well it's an art form Yuuka and the people need to understand that their leader is cultured and wise, therefore fit to rule. Not to mention the dark and the quiet is a great place to take a nap."

The older man said, giving the girl a tired smile as he stretched, yawning slightly. He had been half asleep when she had vocalized her concern with his choice of activities, and it had taken him a considerable amount of self control not to start laughing at her comments. He wasn't the world's biggest fan of Kabuki either, but it had it moments, when he was awake that was.

"Look, it's gonna be over soon, and you have to appreciate all the work these men put into mastering their slightly annoying craft."

It had been quite a while since Kurei had been to Kudzu's home. The last time he was there was probably when he convinced her to join the Yami in the first place, and now here he was, coming to ask her to return. But he wasn't alone this time.

Sitting on his shoulder was a beautiful raven, pitch-black in color and with glittering ebony eyes that sparkled brilliantly in the moonlight. The raven surveyed their surroundings with disinterest, finding nothing of note to focus on. The night was silent and it was seemingly safe.

He strode up to the door to Kudzu's house and knocked on it without a moment's hesitation. Even the way he stood was different than before. There was no more uncertainty within him. All that was there was confidence.

Ryoku watched the performance silently from the back of the shogun's box. There was a small stream of light flooding in from the hallway outside, which he was drawing on for energy. He found Yuuka's complaints to be somewhat humorous. He wasn't a huge fan of kabuki, but he certainly didn't mind the sight of two men kissing each other. He'd certainly done a lot of that himself. Before D'amour left.

The thought caused many bitter feelings to run through him, and his grip on his katana's hilt tightened. It took a lot of effort for him to calm himself, and once he had, the grip loosened. Slightly.

"Yeah, I bet it's real hard to learn how to make out with another guy." Yuuka droned sarcastically, but the man was right. From what little she could understand, the stupid pageant was just about over. She yawned, and took her pseudo-father's advice by laying down her head once again. Please, take me oh sweet god of dreams, and don't let me go until these men stop dancing around in their frilly dresses. Not that she'd ever say something so over-dramatic out loud....

Laughter could be heard from inside the house, and footsteps hurried to the door. A voice further away called to the person who belonged to the sound. "Don't worry about the door Aki, I'll get it, just make sure that Takehiko doesn't drop my little treasure, okay?" "Yes, ma'am," the voice near the door replied, then hurried off. Sure footsteps replaced the hurried ones near the portal, and the door opened to reveal Kudzu's smiling form. "Hello, can I-" She started automatically before she realized who it was. "Oh, Kurei... it's you..." Her figure didn't seem as perfect as ten years ago, and there was something different about her face. It still glowed when happy, but it was much softer, gentler than the bright light of her youth.

A man holding a baby came to the door, and kissed her cheek. "I'd never drop little darling! You forget that she's my treasure too." There was a boy at his feet who looked offended.
"Hey! What about me?!"
"Oh, yes. I wouldn't drop you either."
"Dad!"
Kudzu bent down next to the boy. "Your father and I cherish you too sweetheart." She kissed the top of his head, and turned back to Kurei. "Hunny, this is my old friend... Kurei."

The man looked confused, then his eyes darkened for a moment before returning to normal. "Well, if you're a friend, then you should come in! We were just about to sit down for dinner. Won't you join us?"
Kudzu looked uncomfortable with the idea, but sighed, and made room for him to come in. "Please do, it's been forever."

"It is not difficult to make out with another man," Ryoku stated, glancing down at Yuuka. "It is quite pleasant, really." He would say nothing else on the subject, though. He had just about sworn off relationships of that sort ever since D'amour left. He hoped the man would return to him. But for all he knew, D'amour had already found another lover. Or he was dead. The latter would be less painful, Ryoku believed.

Raiden was luckily enough blessed with the ability to zone out, so the Shogun's choice of watching Kabuki theatre wasn't bothering him as much as the rest of the group. What did bother him was watching the man's grip tighten on his katana from the corner of his eyes. He turned his head toward Ryoku, his red eyes narrowing.

"Calm yourself."

The Shogun chuckled at the girl, not bothering to chastise her for her bad manners. She was good enough in public and trying to change a teenage was like running against the wind. He went back to sleep for the remainder of the play and when it was finally finished, he nudged his companion.

"Hey, time to make our exit."
PostPosted: Tue Jan 06, 2009 8:35 pm

Yuuka moaned as something nudged her awake. "It's finally over?" The girl yawned, and wiped the drool off of her face. Unfortunately, the wood banister that served as her make-shift pillow was thoroughly soaked. She just hoped that she hadn't slobbered enough for stray drops to fall onto the crowd below, even though that would be totally hilarious. "I'm thirsty," she commented as she stretched and rose to her feet. "And this kimono is totally itchy. Can we go home where I'm allowed to wear pants?"

Ryoku gave Raiden a look mixed with just about every emotion associated with anger. He said nothing to the man, but his grip on the katana's hilt tightened again. It was impossible for him to be calm anymore. He might put on a show of calm, but on the inside, he was as dangerous as a tsunami. His control had been slipping more and more often over the recent years, and it was only a matter of time before he lost it completely, at the rate things were going.

Kurei's head tilted slightly toward the raven as he considered the man's offer. He gave the raven a glance, and it seemed to nod in response to his unspoken question. Only when it did that did he nod to the man who was likely Kudzu's husband.

"I would like that," he stated. Even his voice had changed. It was more intense than before, and he almost seemed to radiate power as he stepped into the house.

"It wasn't that bad and you know it."

The Shogun said, but as he usually did, he nodded and decided they could indeed go home. He signaled for Raiden and Ryoku to accompany them as they left the theatre, nodding at the people as he left, his arm around Yuuka's shoulders.

"Remind me to get rid of you."

Raiden hissed at Ryoku when they were just out of earshot of the Shogun. The man was a liability and he needed to be gotten rid of.

"You are not going to be rid of me," Ryoku said, shaking his head at Raiden. "Would you prefer for me to be unleashed on the innocent people of Edo? If I am here, at least I can unleash h**l on your enemies." He seized a torch before stepping outside.

Yuuka put on her most lovely smile for the other theater-goes as they left. It had taken her year to develop, but it was now perfect. She knew that someday these people would rely on her for protection, but right now she just wanted them to mind their own business. The murmuring of the crowd was indecipherable, but you didn't need a brain to figure out what they were saying. "Isn't she lovely?" "He's so gallant!" "Just the cutest girl I've ever seen!" "Why does he have to be old enough to be my dad?" Oh, along with every rumor that had ever circulated. The one about the Shogun's lolita fetish had been more or less her fault, but he was the one who had lied about what a lover was! When they finally got back to the estate, she rushed off to her room. "I'm gonna go change! I'll meet you in the main room!"

Kudzu took the young boy by the hand, and together they led Kurei to the dining room. A maid was already setting out plates, and Takehiko asked her to leave one more for their guest. She bowed, and went to retrieve the extra dish. "Do you want some sake, Kurei?" Kudzu asked politely, still not entirely happy with the situation. Kurei had changed, and judging by his actions the last time she saw him, that could mean he was dangerous. She didn't want a man like that near her family. The maid came back with an extra dish, and soon, there was food on the table. Takehiko tried to juggle the baby in his arms while eating his food, a fact that made the young boy giggle. "Wanna switch?" Kudzu offered. "I'll take Momoka, and you help Itsuki with his chop sticks?" The man nodded, and she took the baby from him.

Kurei sat down at the table, his raven shifting on his shoulder as he did.

"Sake would be wonderful," he said to Kudzu, glad she had offered. It was remarkable how much the woman had changed. She was actually responsible now. He was rather surprised, but pleasantly so. "I hope you do not mind my feathered friend here." Of course, he meant the raven. "He could go out of sight, if you wish."

The raven glanced at Kurei as though surprised, but it made no other reaction to the offer. It shifted its position and puffed out its shiny feathers, making itself more comfortable on his shoulder.

"I would prefer for you to be as far away from the Shogun and his heir as possible."

Raiden said, glaring at the man. He was going to have a long talk with the Shogun when the man had free time, having the man any where near was a bad idea. He was a mad dog and mad dog's needed to be put down.

The Shogun led her back to the estate, glad she was a perfect lady in public. Now if only he could get her to tone the sarcasm down just a little bit. He hated the idea of her turning into...what his last failed heir had turned into. That's why he had tried harder to focus on leading the people and responsibility, and less on teaching her how to be a spoiled brat.

"It'll be your turn to pick our social engagement next time."

"Of course you would," Ryoku remarked, not caring at all what Raiden would prefer. He was sure Raiden would prefer for Ryoku to be dead, but that certainly wasn't going to happen, now was it? Raiden would have to settle for being disappointed.
