Slowly she swirled the damp rag over the worn wooden tables, moving crumbs and removing spilt sweets to the floor. Pulling back the matching wooden chair with the intricate flower design along the back she dusted the crumbs in all directions. Standing back she swept her eyes over the little shop as the sun slowly faded behind the house.

When she had started the space had been old and falling apart. Now as her eyes roamed over the four mostly matching tables with their chairs nestled close to the front window she had salvaged she smiled, satisfied that all looked decent. She had loved the individuality each chair held with similar shape and style but each chair had personalized carvings from flowers to bugs to her favorite with the fleur des lis. Across from the little seating area was the counter. It gleamed with the wax she rubbed into it to keep it looking shiny and new. The display case had glass panels and displayed bread, cakes and other treats she had dreamed up. A short, fat candle burned on each shelf to light the cabinet from within when the light disappeared behind the horizon.

The floor had been swept within an inch to it's life and rubbed with wax as well. Small hand woven rugs dotted the floor in front of the door and at the counter. To the back of the store was a separate room which she had turned into a small kitchen where delicious smells taunted customers and the back stairs. Through the back door a small vegetable garden and a pear tree shared a cramped gated plot. Small daisies lined the back of the fence poking their heads up towards the sun.

Up the back stair was a small, cozy room dominated by a four poster bed and a trunk. The bed was made of dark wood and covered in feather pillows and a hand made feed sack quilt. Hung on the walls were tapestries depicting landscapes of countries far away, across the sea. The trunk was old and ornately carved. It was really all she had left from the land of her birth. It had survived it's fair share of travel on pirate ships, through jungles, and finally came to rest in the small room. A rug covered the floor and was a dull red with cream flowers, all faded by the sun shining through a window that over looked the small garden and on clear days could see through the trees a small hint of the ocean.

The bathroom was through a hung curtain and contained a beautiful porcelain bath that had been the treasure of this old building, really the reason she bought it. The porcelain was scratched and stained, but the claw feet were gold and the faucet and drain were gold. The bath was large and could fit two or three people at least. The small lavatory was wall hung and next to it the toilet. Sconce candle holders were placed around the room and covered in old candle wax drippings until the lead could no longer be seen.

Shaking her head she could still see the fallen in ceiling beam that had separated the main floor into two rooms and the broken steps at the top of the back stair. A layer of dust and wood splinters had covered every surface. It had been a devil of a task to put in a bakers kitchen and last year after the last frost of winter she had started the little, struggling vegetable garden out back. All in all she was doing well for herself. Letting her mind wander past her own little universe it seemed to settle on it's favorite memory, the Captain at the wheel of his ship, the wind blowing his silvery hair back, playing with it, tumbling it. His keen eyes looked out over the water, one hand on the ships wheel - the other held the compass. His high black boots shown in the sun and the skin at his arms and chest where his shirt had been pulled back or undone was browned.

Wait for me, he had said, wait. Well, she had waited for a year before moving out of his house and into her own, creating her business and becoming involved in the ghost town of Provoka. She had wondered if the Captain was even coming back at all.

Although it had been nearly a year since he'd lived on Provoka, Ardrick still felt completely at home. Bursting in through the door, he caused dust from the outside to flow into the walkway. Heroically, he put his hands to his sides and stared at the ceiling. This only made him look both odd and rude for having dirtied the place. Realizing this he looked embarrassed.

"Woops. Err... Sorry bout me mess."

Getting down to business, he immediately forgot about the mess and walked up to the counter.

"Well ahoy me darling! It warms me heart ta see such a beautiful young lady like yerself feeding dashing men like meself."

A moment or two passed while he formed a blank stare as if he was going over what he just said and analyzing it. Finally, he smiled and nodded. Apparently, he had said what he meant.

"Now, how much would it be fer one chocolate cake an' five chocolate cupcakes?"

Rousted out of her daydream by the banging of the front door she jumped slightly and turned her head to see who in the world would be coming at such a late hour in the afternoon. Smiling pleasantly seeing he was a customer she moved to behind the counter as he made a quick apology about bringing in more dust from the street.

Please, do not worry yourself about such things. How may I help you?

As he walked towards her, she thought he paid her a compliment, but his eyes glazed over and his mouth stilled as he caught sight of what was left in the case. Seeming to make up his mind he nodded and ordered.

For the cake and cupcakes it would be 12 piques, but because of how late it is an I would have to preserve them anyways, you can have the lot for 8 piques. Would you enjoy them here or like them wrapped to transport?

All through their conversation she had been studying the man. His tousled hair looked like he slept through most of the morning and his dusty clothes looked as if he had traveled from out of the small dirt road town, maybe from the jungle or even as far as the mountains. Studying his face she searched her mind for recognition but for the life of her did not know this mans face.

Ardrick was taken aback for a moment.

"Twelve piques!? And they call me a thief!"

Realizing he was being rude, he apologized again.

"Sorry. Thank ye very much fer the discount. I'll be taken most of it wrapped, but one cupcake fer here."

He tried to make a charming smile.

"You know... you weren't here when I left the island almost a year ago. What's yer name?"

She was taken aback with his roughness, but he seemed to realize his own rudeness and apologized.

Quality does not come cheap, sir. Once you eat one of my cupcakes all else shall pale in comparison.

Giving him one of her dazzling smiles to reassure him that his money was well spent, she ducked behind the glass case, easing it open and gently extracting the chocolate cake. Wrapping it in wax paper she then gently placed it in a travel box. Turning back to the case she selected five chocolate cupcakes and wrapped four in wax paper like the cake and placed it in the same travel box before placing the last cupcake on a delicate china tea plate. Dipping her hands into another container she pulled out multi colored sugar drops and sprinkled them on top of the frosted pastry. Dashing back into the kitchen she retrieved a glass cup and filled it with cool water. All this she placed on the counter in front of the man who had been watching the cupcake eagerly. He smiled at her and seemed to be making small talk.

My name is Miss Midnight Oasis, but you may call me Midnight if it pleases you. But a year ago I was staying up at Flint Bluff, newly arrived to the Island. I am pleased to make your acquaintance, sir.

Staring at the cupcake viciously, he listened to what the woman said and was about to answer, but he couldn't wait any longer. It looked so delicious. He took the cupcake and bit half of it off immediately. Suddenly, he felt warm inside and let out a giggle by mistake. Feeling less manly for having giggled, he ate the rest of the cupcake and drank the water.

"Thank ye kindly, milady. It's very nice ta meet ye Miss Midnight."

Still licking the tasty chocolate frosting off his fingers, he took a bow.

"Strange. We must have just missed each other when I left the island. Well, I better be off now, I have ta take this cake to someone fer a surprise birthday gift."

She smiled as he let out a small giggle and devoured the cupcake.

I hope all is to your liking. And it is my pleasure to make your acquaintance, sir. And your name...

But she was stopped short as she quizzically watched the man like the chocolate frosting off his hands. Trying to hide her small smile she watched him bow.

A birthday?

She quickly sorted through her head all the people on the island she knew with birthdays but could not for the life of her recall someone with such an early in the year birthday. Cocking her head to the side her brow scrunched in concentration.

*Strolling down the uprooted bricks here and there of the lane, Jack made his way towards his old shipmate Midnight's bakehouse. He had the most amazing craving for a nice pot of tea, sweet crumpets & good company.*

"I do hope she's in..."

Hearing a ruckus outside, she quickly wiped the counter where the gentleman had spilled some crumbs and blew out the candles in the bakery case. Popping back into the kitchen she caught a glimpse of herself in the only mirror she owned, a tiny wall hung thing with beautiful gold gilt along the frame with a spider web crack in the bottom right corner. Tucking a strand that had come loose from the plait that hung straight against her back she scrubbed the flower smear from her forehead and straightened her bodice, smoothed her skirt and tried on a smile. Satisfied as she could be she slipped back into the front room and drew the curtains in the front window. Switching the sign from 'open' to 'will be right back, promise' she stepped outside into the dimming light.

*Finally rounding the corner of what used to be the Spyglass Tavern, Kurisutofa peered across the street at the Bakery just in time to see a beautiful young woman step into the sunlight of the fresh new day.

Midnight had definitley bloomed since last he'd seen her: Having grown into a woman, her cheeks had shallowed, revealing her fine features. The young girl he'd known so long ago was gone, and the young widow had gone with her. Now, Midnight stood before him a grown woman free to her own whims and fancies. All her romantic dreams and fantasies of piracy on the high seas had come to this... a Bakeshoppe. 'Funny how people spend their free time ashore', he pondered. Smiling sheepishly, he hailed her with open arms.

"Oi! Ahoy there, my dear girl. You wouldn't happen to know where I could find the proprioter of this fine Bakery, would you? There's a shiny sixpence in it for you if you can bring me to her."

Turning at the voice she almost had to do a double take. The face she saw flashed before her eyes...

On the deck of the Lady Washington, watching over the crew making sure they were scrubbing her spotless. The sun beat down overhead, a hot day even for the middle of summer. The wind whipped her black mane over her shoulders and chapped her face. He emerged from below deck, his black boots shining, hat a little rumpled, pants dull from the salt water and sun and white shirt partially yellowed from the weeks on the ocean and no laundry service. He was jacket-less because of the heat of the day and small beads of sweat ran down the side of his face starting at his hairline where the silvery strands were pulled into a black thong at the nape of his neck and ending past his collarbone into the collar of his shirt. His eyes squinted a bit, adjusting to the light. When he looked at her his mouth pulled up at the corners and his eyes softened.

It was the look upon this strangers face. No, not a stranger, she knew this face better then her own mother's. She had to take a steadying breath to keep her heart from exploding within her chest. When had he returned? She was so happy he was even alive. Shaking her head, causing her curls to bounce over her shoulders she smiled and replied.

I own it, finest pastries and bread in town. That sixpence will buy you a few fresh baked cupcakes in the morning.

"Midnight, my dear girl! Give an ol' seadog a squidge?"said Kurisutofa as he made his way across the square. Throwing open his arms, his face broke it's firm set and obtained a wide open smile.

The ice that had formed around her maidens heart cracked when her heart contracted and then fluttered. Her pulse raced as his arms opened to her and he advanced, smiling one of his rare smiles. Her own mouth matched his in the gesture out of a will of its own. She found her entire body now faced his and her feet slowly moving under her, almost as if her body could not wait for her mind to catch up. As she crossed the distance between them in four skipping strides she was enveloped into strong arms that smelled of leather, brine, and a tinge of spicy orange.

Wrapping his arms around her slight frame, he held her close and chuckled in her ear. Giving a good sturdy squeeze, he spoke soflty into her ear.

"Oh, Midnight my dear... it's been too far and too long a distance. I thought I'd never see you again..."

Wondering as to whether or not that might have sounded rather forward, he quickly fumbled over the words in his mind. Stumbling like a schoolboy, he began to utter somekind of remark that would better suite, but then it didn't come. He realized just then that what he'd said held true. While he'd been imprisoned, his mind was occupied with two things and two things alone: Finding a means of escape and finding his way back to her.

Though this was as true as the sun was bright, it still didn't change the fact that he was significantly older than she and that she was a widow in mourning. Having been at sea for so long, he couldn't for the life of him remember how long custom stated she remain in such a state, but there it was before him. The reason for all the times he'd distanced himself from her while still remaining as close as possible. All the awkwardness of sharing a Cabin. All the times he'd walked the windward side of the Quarterdeck while she remained on her customary side with the other officers. All the times he'd secretly wished to invite her to his sacred side of the deck so that they could have been alone for a moment. All the years that could have been spent together now stood before his minds eye... a void of loneliness. Oh well, sei la vie. What he'd said was true and he wasn't going to change it now.
