I am trying to step away from using just my favorite pokemon in wifi battles, I love my team to death but they have some serious weak points, but when I was trying to come up with a wifi team I realized I had no clue where to start I plan on breeding the pokemon and raising them from level one...but I am .... having a hard time understanding this whole IV and EV thing, a friend gave me a Garchomp that was raised that way as a birthday gift, it's really strong and I use it in my current team:
Team I have Currently (moves, and Stats will not be posted at this time)
Absol Jolteon Swampert Garchomp Charizard Venusaur
those are the pokemon I am currently using as an all around team, I also have pokemon based off of region I <3 my Jhoto team.
well any advice.

Nice Avatar!
That aside, EV training is probably going to be your first step in the competitive field simply because you can directly influence it and it is the easiest to understand.
When a pokemon gains battle experience, it also gains a set amount of EVs, or Effort Values. When a pokemon gains 4 EVs for a stat, that stat increases by one point. A stat can have 255 EVs invested into it, meaning a dramatic difference in the stats of a pokemon that was used throughout the game and one carefully trained. However, a pokemon can only have 510 total EVs, meaning that only two stats can be maxed out. While only two stats can approach or reach their limit, that doesn't mean that only two stats can be influenced.
The easiest way I have found to get EV points is by fighting the following pokemon:
HP: Bidoof; easy enough to find, they yield 1 EV. ATK: Staravia, Gyarados, Bibarel; again, easy enough to find, each yields 2 EVs. DEF: Geodude, Onyx, Graveler; The Oreburg mine is a great place to train. Geodude yields 1 EV, while Onyx and Graveler offer 2. Speed: Magicarp, Starly, Zubat, Golbat; all are relatively easy to find. Golbat offers 2 EVs, while the others offer 1. SpATK: Ghastly, Haunter, Gengar; Giving 1, 2, and 3 EVs respectively, they all appear at the Old Chateau. SpDef: Tentacool, Tentacruel, Mantyke; All are found in the waterway leading to Victory Road. Tentacruel gives 2 EVs.
As you can guess, EV training can be a laborious endeavor. Thankfully, there are a few ways to speed up the process without screwing it up:
Exp Share: A wonderful item; the pokemon merely needs experience from a fight to gain EVs, meaning it should be very easy to train a pokemon by committing small-scale genocide with your post-game pokes. Macho Brace: This item doubles the EV gain off of a pokemon, meaning that the time needed to cap out a stat is cut in two. Power Equipment: these strange items found as prizes in the battle tower add 4 EVs of their specified stat to the EVs gained after defeating an opponent. This means that with the power lens, Gastly now gives 5 EVs in SpAtk, while Bidoof would give 4 EVs in SpAtk and 1 EV in HP. Pokerus: A virus that limits a pokemon's experience gain in order to double its EV gain. Combined with the power items, a pokemon can have a maxed out stat in as little as ten minutes of training.
Now to discuss your team, or at least what there is to discuss. As noted in my (currently incomplete) beginner's guide, type choices regarding pokemon are made as defensive choices, not offensive ones. Right now, your team is vulnerable to the game's most used physical attack, (Earthquake), and the game's most used special attack, (Ice Beam).

thank you, I shall try and start EV training some of the pokemon I have breeded, I would really like to keep an Absol on my team it's my favorite pokemon. The team I have now is just for in game battles and they do well because well they are lv 100 and you can beat almost anything in the game with a Level 100, on thing I do have going for me though is that I have a good basis for breeding ^-^ a plus of having all the female and male starters.. not game cheats by the way. Just lots of pokemon games and trading haha.
Thank you so much for explaining that, it's confused me for a while, now all I have to do is pick out a good team, I was debating on using a Tentacruel because they do get quite a few decent moves (in my opinion at least) and they are quite underused. My problem is that I tend to go with offensive moves that the pokemon normally wouldn't use, like I have a Salamence that knows Hydro pump as an egg move, most people would no suspect that, but....Salamence does better at physical attacks than special, though I still think it's funny to watch my friend's faces, when there pokemon get hit with a hydro pump xD that was my main reason for breeding that pokemon, it's confusing. Well I am now going to go through my pokemon look at all my lv 1 and their natures n see what I got.
Thank you again
Malia
