Hello there! Well.. I'm looking for advice on birth control, what's the safest, most effective, or easiest to use.. I suppose..

I'm going to the health unit on thursday, but I'd like to hear actual.. user's opinions rather than just have facts read to me, if you know what I mean?

So what suggestions do you lovely people have for me?

Thanks in advance..

Ah, yes, Birth Control. How I love it so.
Well what I can tell you is that I don't think one person will be able to tell you which birth control is the absolute safest, effective and easiest to use because I doubt one person has actually tried all of them. And I assume you are talking about the pill of course?

There are pills that can help shorten your period once a month, make it more managable - more or less used as a tracking device. I am currently on one like this, and it's been great! My period hasn't gone away, but it certainley gets lighter. And there can be some wonderful side-effects such as breast-enlargement. But there are sometimes negative ones such as nausea and such.

There are other pills that can also make you have your period once every three months or four. I haven't taken this one, but I've heard good things about it, as well, such as the same side effects it produces as mine does, but if you look at this one, there is one huge benefit, but one negative one (dependant on if you are sexually active):
1. You have less periods in one year (hooray!)
2. If you are sexually active and have sex, you won't be able to tell if you are pregnent right away unless your period is due that month.

There are also some other very very rare side effects that should be known about such as potential heart attacks and such - but these problems are so infrequent that they must list them just to caution people anways.

So the best thing to do is to really talk to your doctor and lay out what you want - do you still want your period once a month? Or do you don't want it at all? Doctors know what they are doing, so there should be no worries.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that you should NEVER smoke while on birth control for it can cause some other potential side effects that you may not want.

The waiting three or four months to find out might possibly drive me crazy, but I'll consider that option, I hadn't heard of it before. surprised

Yeah the pill is probably the best option for me... I'm just unsure of what time to take it at.

No problem!

With the pill, you can take it anytime during the day but it MUST be at the same time every day. So you have to choose your times carefully.

I agree with Oris, that each different kind of Birth Control works differently for each individual. I can't offer you much advice on this because I haven't taken Birth Control since I was fifteen because it stopped me from having periods regularly and it kept making me "Spot" bleed, which is a common side-effect for most pills.

Just make sure you talk to the doctor about which one he thinks will help more then any other for you personally instead of getting something so populary used.

I did have a friend who was put on a "shot" Birth Control, I'm not quite sure of the name of the medication in the shot, but it made her so she had no period at all....so, I'm not quite sure.

I wish you luck, and hope everything goes good though!

I've been on various courses of the Pill for about three years and had a number of different experiences depending on which course i've been on.

The first course made me really, really depressed and played merry hell with my Eczema
The 2nd made me even more depressed but not quite so bad on my skin.
The third was no emotional breakdowns, no skin problems, but I did lose my sex drive completely, which was a complete pain in the arse.
I decided to take a short break before trying out another course of the Pill and then just start on the first day of my next period like you're supposed to buuuuut my next period didn't turn up...and didn't do so again until four months later, which was slightly unsettling.

I'm waiting to see what happens on this lot. -le sigh-

A friend of mine got an implant in her arm which lasts for three years before you have to have it replaced. She didn't like it much but I can't remember for the life of me why - I guess if you end up having side-effects you've either gotta have the thing ripped out of just put up with them...

I have that same implant in my arm you're talking about Phaelyn. There can be side-effects like the occasional headache, and it can make your periods more irregular, heavier, lighter, or even non-existent. Some people report mood swings or weight gain, although I've personally not had such problems. The good thing is you can forget about it, at least till the three years is up, and it's better for people like me who are a little bit on the scatter-brained side and forget a lot of things.

Obviously there's the usual stuff like the Pill. You can get injections of the same kind of hormones, which is once every three months, although I've not had that and I'm not so good with needles. I also think I remember something about a coil, although the doc really didn't recommend that considering age, and said it was best for people who've had kids and want protection again. I can't think of anything more off-hand.

Yupyupyup

The Coil (or IUD) is implanted in your uterus and, as Princess says, is really for women who have already had kids so is pretty irrelevant. My mum got pregnant while using an IUD.

...although my mum also got pregnant while on the Pill and while using a condom rolleyes

Im on Loestrin? Junel?
I don't know what its called. But its kinda odd.

I don't get my period every month, sometimes its every two months, sometimes 3 months. Its kinda frantic, I never know when I'm gonna get it. But the pill itself is good. I have difficulties swallowing pills. Its like one of my irrational fears, and I have no idea why everytime I try to take a pill I breakout in tears and it takes me an hour to choke it down. But not with these they're tiny so I don't even notice that im swallowing it. ;D

The reason I decided to get birth control was to help with my acne which is better x243463689 times. Now, I never break out, and if I do its small and incredibly unnoticeable.
