I'll read anything, but I'm a pretty hardcore fantasy nut... science fiction second though I'm more into soft science fiction than hard. I do try to keep up with poets I enjoy though, and I'll occasionally go on classics binges. Anyone keep track of the books they read? I've got a little log where I record all the novels I read so I can always look back through it to find authors and titles and such. Plus it's just kinda cool to keep a count.

yeah, i like anything, but fantasy is the best. i like action as well, but it is confusing to follow some writer's battle scene. angst and grully(spelt wrong, i know) are one of the best though.

I read mostly Fantasy and original fiction works, I can't get enough of it. Mainly because it's what I write and I love reading what strange things other people can come up with.
The mind is a wonderful thing :3
But I tend to dislike stories about the average person. (nonfiction stuff) Unless it's centered around artists or musicians or someone with a talent who's trying to build on it or something.

I like to read fantasy mostly, but sometimes I pick up a sci-fi or relistic fiction book for a change. I'll read just about anything though.

My favorites are books like Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Lemony Snicket books, and anything that has to do with vampires or magical/mythical people/creatures.

I'm reading Stephen King's novels right now, in order. I'm on Salem's Lot (number two), and so far I liked both that one and Carrie a whole lot. Of course I read lots of other books too, and I like most of them. I started reading The Stepford Wives today, but I didn't like it very much. I doubt I'll continue with it. Most of the books I read on my own time are Young Adult novels, though, because I usually find complete adult novels too boring. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

I like anything out of the ordinary, which I guess would fall under the Fiction/Sci Fi category. I liked Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, and also some small books which no one knows about... I'm reading the Avalon series, and I read Premonitions, which was really good. I used to love Goosebumps- I still do, and my favorite poet is Shel Silverstein. <3 And I shall soon start reading Eragon, just have to finish the Avalon series first. sweatdrop

I've dabbled in most of the genres, really. Lovecraft for horror, or maybe Stephen King.. For fantasy, it'd have to be George R.R. Martin. If you can stand vulgarity and sex, read him. Best fantasy author in ages. I don't read the genre a lot, because most of it follows the Tolkien Template, but he's absolutely brilliant. Blah, I'll just list my favorite authors. >>
Horror: Lovecraft/King Fantasy: George R.R. Martin Realistic/Human Relations: Janet Fitch? No idea. Maybe whoever wrote Requiem for a Dream. Sci-Fi: Orson Scott Card Adventure: John Marco? He's sort of fantasy, but he does military dramas, so I'm not too sure.
The only one I don't really read is historical fiction, but the little I've read of Michael Shaara is okay. That, and mystery. Mystery's up there with fantasy and romance on my "AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE" list.

Mystery's up there with fantasy and romance on my "AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE" list. Yes, someone else who appreciates George! George R.R. Martin is my favourite fantasy author hands down. And Orson Scott Card is my fav SF writer too. Runners up would Guy Gavriel Kay for fantasy and Neal Stephenson for SF. I've read the Jackal of Nar series by Marco - what else has he written that you'd recommend? Other genre favs for me would be: SF/Humour: Douglas Adams Fantasy/Humour: Piers Anthony alternative(not sure what else you'd call it - a little too weird for mainstream... somewhat magic realism?): Tom Robbins. He may be stuck in some LSD induced 60's obsession, but anyone who can pull off writing a whole plot thread from the POV of a Can of Beans has my respect. Runner up: Salman Rushdie. Modernist: William Faulkner. Because 'As I Lay Dying' freaked me out in a good way. Runners Up: I'd be stuck choosing between D.H. Lawrence, Joseph Conrad and James Joyce Mainstream: John Irving maybe? Parody: Evelyn Waugh or George Orwell Historical Fiction: Umberto Eco Arthurian (deserves it's own category because there's so damn much of it): T.H. White or Jack Whyte Canadian: Timothy Findley. European: Franz Kafka Elizabethan: Edmund Spenser Medieval: Giovanni Boccaccio And I won't even get into poetry or graphic novels or the list will become giant. I don't really read Romance or Mystery and only a bit of Horror (not enough to have a fav). I will read Mystery sometimes crossed with another genre though. Umberto Eco does great Historical Fic/Mystery and Isaac Asimov's SF/Mysteries are a good read. If someone can show me a modern Romance that isn't just softcore porn for women, maybe I'd take a look (but don't count on it). (My avoid-like-the-plague list is pretty much dominated by romance and Jane Austen. Oh, and Westerns wink )
