 Well 2nd season isn't coming =( but it was supposed to start at the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (I haven't read it yet but my friend has). Apparently, future Kyon travels to the present and pushes present Kyon down the stairs (was he trying to kill himself??) and Haruhi goes missing. I won't ruin the rest of the story.
As for the Yuki story that was rumored to come instead, I have no idea =/

Maybe because there weren't enough support/funding, not really sure why.

Yea, I really have no idea what's going on with it. Aren't they supposed to be coming out with a "new" series of Haruhi which pretty much covers what the second season would?

All I heard was that they cancelled the Disappearance of HS and they were going to do a "Yuki Special." Not really sure what that is though confused

I don't think there are any characters from the Melancholy that I particularly DISlike. :S Although, I do dislike certain pairings. Such as ItsukixHaruhi, TaniguchixYuki Thank goodness these aren't very popular! xD
