How did you feel when you wrote your first fanfic? Do you think you've gotten better with each one?
PostPosted: Mon Jan 19, 2009 12:15 am

well my first posted fanfic story is one I'm still working on. I've enjoyed the process from writing it by hand to typing it up. Several things get changed as I do that with the story so it just adds to my writing process.
I do think that by branching out from the x-men:evolution fandom for posting online, (I used to write loads of fanfics just in journals for me and my friends to enjoy), I have improved my plotting and story telling abilities in various areas.
But then while I write fanfiction for fun, I also write plenty of my own fiction too, so it is not just the fanfiction that is adding to my writing abilities.

I would imagine that first fanfics are monsters, a task enormous with a mixture between excitement and anticipation. Or at least that was the experience for myself.

Fanfiction was something I was drawn into by being a reader for it, following a very popular author to try my hand in the ring, so I went a little over board in the story. It was complex, out there and overly graphic in violence - which reading into I find is a common trend for young writers.

Something of a superhero complex they tend to have. The main character so unstoppable and perfect with "cool" as an adjective.

As the years passed, my style shifted dramatically and I had a rewrite of my first fanfic - my fans loved the different angle I took out of the superhero phase. Then a few more years, and I can say that with each passing day I do get better as a writer - but I think that's just practice.

Would I contribute those ideals and say that every fanfic I write is better then the last? No - one of my favorites was something I wrote in the very beginning of my days.

I think it's more of the topic I'm writing on with the emotions that correspond at the time. But in devil's advocate of that - yes there are significant improvements of my writing over the years, but mostly from a grammatical and vocabulary stand-point. I feel the same style is used.

Hard question to answer.

I wrote my first fanfic three years ago and I remember thinking I was pretty damn clever (and extremely amusing). xd

Looking back through my other ones I can see that I have been improving, although steady improvement isn't apparent because with each new fandom I move onto writing about I try out a new style, so it takes a while to get used to that style and improve in it. But I've definitely improved, especially in writing endings.

Good lord my first fanfiction was a pile of incomprehensible gibberish. The initial plot, concept and characters I still plan to rewrite, as in itself it was something that could be enjoyed. My presentation was utterly atrocious though. x3

I think I've improved, a bit, with spelling, sentence structures, grammar and all that fun stuff. (Not nearly enough though.) And my style changes between the pieces I write, depending on the character's attitude and POV, and in that sense my word usage changes too.

Overall I'd have to say I've definitely improved, at least the stories I write are coherent now. x3

Wow...that seems so long ago now. But it's really only been a few years. I started writing my first fanfic at my great aunts house (technically she's my mom's great aunt, but whatever), and because she's so...conservative you could say? I started writing out of a lack of anything to do.

And every time I reread that fanfic, I cringe painfully. Thankfully, I've gotten much better now! mrgreen Well, at least compared to how I started. I occasionally have cringing moments when reading the first fanfic I ever posted on the site, but those are a lot less than how many I get reading the itty bitty notebook from that week at Aunt Rosie's house.

Are you speaking of the first fanfiction I actually wrote, or the first I posted on ff.net? If it's the former, I cringe upon rereading it. The latter I'm actually quite proud of still. I loved the process of writing it, and by that time I was an avid reader of fanfiction and so I knew a bit of what to expect and some things to avoid.

I've definitely improved on my characterizations, I believe. And the overall plot lines have improved too. I'm still trying to work on how to find endings for some of the plots, though. ^_^

My first ever fanfiction? Oh my goodness. I have improved SO much since my first fanfiction. My first fanfiction was terrible and even now, incredibly painful to read. I look back on it and go, "Do the words 'review your own story before posting' mean anything to you, Emcy?"

My first fanfiction was actually a chapter story. A Beyblade chapter story. Titled "Where Is The Love?". I really liked the ideas I had for it but nothing seemed to come out right and eventually, I simply deleted it from my account entirely and said goodbye to that old weight.

However, when I first wrote it, at the time, I remember how proud I was of myself. Proud to think that I was putting my words out for anyone to read, anyone who possibly might have found what I wrote interesting. Either people had pity on me, don't know good literature when they see it or genuinely liked my ideas but I actually got quite a few reviews on that story and for 25 chapters, complete and sealed, I got a solid 50 reviews. Pretty damn good for a first timer, eh? On average, a whole two reviews per chapter and the cool thing being was that I never got the same reviewer twice.

Thanks to critiques and personal judgement though, I've improved. Thank goodness for reviewers!! All hail!! 4laugh

I posted my first ever FanFiction about eight months ago. It was for a school assignment, I had to write a story about picture. I remember feeling so proud and excited that other people where going to read my story. I literally checked my views everyday for probably two weeks.

However, probably three months after I posted it I got a beta. It's amazing how much proper grammar can improve your writing. But even before that I was given really nice reviews saying how original my story was.

Lately though I've been thinking about continuing my first fic.

It's my following fic's however that scare me.

Man, I don't even remember my first fanfic. It was most likely about Star Wars when I was in High School because I was pretty obsessed then. It's most likely in a notebook somewhere around here and most likely unfinished because I have not finished a story yet.
