I don't want anyone to get really mad one way or the other, but this has come up often at my school. I also realize the discussion will probably be a bit biased considering where we are, but I guess I'm just curious about what people really think.
So here's the thing. Most anime lovers will claim that anime is an art. Conversely, most/many artsy types will claim that it is not. What do you think?

Personally I feel anime is an art. It is an expression of thought and feeling, sometimes representing the creator's view of politics, humankind, or the earth in general. The images and drawing styles have a wide range and can be as different as Picasso verses Delaroche. It has the expression of a paining combined with the plot/story line of a movie. Often times (although not always) they deal with unconventional characters and plots that are filled with gray areas.

And you?

In my opinion, people who go around saying things are not art are generally people not truly interested in art or anything with meaning, emotion, or thought; they are people who are simply concerned with aesthetics and then only aesthetics they deem to be beautiful. Something is art if its creator believes it is (not just says it is).

Of course anime is art, although I can see where some with the opinion that it is not are coming from. In the cases of just copying others work or drawing something so similar to what someone else has done. Aside from that though I feel they don't have much to back up their opinion.

But can't you argue that copying someone's style is also art? Being able to draw exactly like someone else may not be original, but it certainly isn't easy. Although it vexes people and carries a lot of negative reactions, I find forgery to have its own special sense of art.

Anime is considered art and recognized internationally as art. As people had to write the story, and people had to draw the pictures. I think even if it is a remake of a story it is still art because of the time and effort it takes. For example, Zatch Bell books. The art in them is so fantastic, I am surprised it isn't more popular.

There's borrowing and being influenced, and then there is outright stealing. Forgery is not art, it is intellectual theft, like plagiarism.

Also, I believe anime is art. Anime is a drawn medium with its own styles throughout the years. Look at series like Ghost In The Shell, Mushishi, Samurai 7, Jin-Roh, Millennium Actress, and Tekkon Kinkreet, and tell me they aren't examples of art.

Miazaki's work, also, is very beautiful, and Samurai X, even if it's not as known for it.

Hm, well again we come to the definition of art. of course forgery is bad and stealing and it causes a lot of problems socially, as well as the psychology of it not being original which pisses people off, but on it's own, as a forgery, can't that also be considered a form of art? Not acceptable art, mind you, but still an expression of skill and idea. I'm not saying people should start forging things and passing them off as art. I'm not really saying anything productive. But saying that it's still under the umbrella of what art is. Like the tomato of the fruit arts, if you will.
