What songs do you like that remind you of Revolutionary Girl Utena? Right now, after listening to Kate Bush's The Red Shoes, I have to say the title song does:

I firmly believe that the refrains of "They're coming to Take Me Away" fit SKU perfectly. Switch out 'clean white coats' for 'council coats' and it works! (Ohtori campus is supposed to be veeery pretty, after all!)

Akio's "manipulation" of Anthy by monopolizing her love and encouraging her affections. "Crucify" -- Tori Amos
Anthy. Implicitly. Particularly the line which says, 'you're just an empty cage, girl, if you kill the bird' as well as the sentiment that 'I've gotta have my suffering, oh, so that I can have my cross.'

In the wake of the duel called Self (Soi), Utena ('I don't even have the strength to pick up the phone. Wouldn't even know me since you went away--the Prozac doesn't do it for me anymore..') had a big normality complex and became exceedingly depressed. For me, this is the song that represents that complex, and how fixated she was on Anthy ('Heard those stupid people talk about you again--I just had to laugh to keep from hurting them. Simple minds just cannot seem to understand: you are neurotic and depressed, it doesn't mean that you're sad. You walk around oblivious to everything--wear that party dress and mascara like you're queen for the day..'), while Wakaba ('You walk around oblivious to everyone! As much as I hate her, this song sums Shiori up completely. 'She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes, she can ruin your faith with her casual lies, and she only reveals what she wants you to see.'
"Wasted Time" -- The Eagles
Mikage. 'I coulda done so many things, baby, if I could only stop my mind..from wonderin' what's been left behind..and worryin' 'bout this wasted time..' It conveys for me his feelings about Mamiya and Tokiko.
"Victim of Love" -- The Eagles
Kozue, her promiscuity, and how that promiscuity is just a thin veil to protect her from her "loss" of closeness with Miki. Also alludes to her brief time with Akio.
"Life" -- Our Lady Peace
Utena's speech about how Anthy is just a normal girl and should have normal friends--projecting her own feelings onto the Rose Bride--really fits this song. 'And how many days have you just slept away? Does everybody hide? Is everyone afraid? And how many times have you wished you were strong? Have they ever seen your heart? Have they ever seen your pain?'
"Running Away" -- Hoobastank
Wakaba's Saionji complex, particularly after the hair clip incident. 'Cause I did enough to show you that I--was willing to give and sacrifice--And I was the one that was lifting you up, when you thought your life had had enough..'

This song reminds me intensely of Utena, and how everyone seems to be kind of laughing at her for being naive, and thinking she's stupid. Also alludes to how she is unknowingly doing everything Akio wants her to do, playing directly into his clutches. 'You say they taught you how to read and write--yeah they taught you how to count--I say they taught you how to buy and sell your own body by the pound--I think you like to be the simple toy I think you love to play the clown. I think you're blind to the fact that the hand you hold is the hand that holds you down.'
"(Change) In the House of the Flies" -- The Deftones
Anthy witnessing her brother's transition from Dios to the Lord of the Flies--Akio--as well as her indirect manipulation of Akio through becoming the Rose Bride, and his direct manipulation of her. 'I watched a change in you..It's like you never had wings..Now you feel..so alive..'
"Possum Kingdom" -- The Toadies
(Manga)Akio, during the seduction of Utena, and his efforts to gain her as his Rose Bride. 'I'm not gonna lie--I want you for mine--My blushing Bride--My lover, be my lover, yeah. Don't be afraid, I didn't mean to scare you..so help me Jesus.'
