So, in the attempt to cheer up a friend I promised her I'd start my story I'd been writing, again. Thing is, beginnings totally aren't my thing. Any suggestions on what you find to be a catchy.. intro?

Could you tell me about the theme of the story? That would help.

Theme... Well. I'm an indecisive person, but basically I have twin girls, each cursed to a certain time. One day awake during the day, one at night. Each has the characteristic that humans put with day and night, "Good" and "Evil" .. in a way. The evil is more just, working with the darker side of nature which people fear..
But something (I'm debating on having the dead mother some how do this) goes weird and they are both waking up at the same times now.
I'm throwing in the: Typical bad guy that needs to go poof, an MPD in one of the sisters just to amuse myself, an apprentice, mythical creatures (under control of the bad guy) that need to die (so.. not unicorns or stuff like that), and other people that are still under construction in my head. I just, need a beginning. *tear* Everything else is getting written up here. *taps head like an idiot*
Uh... that is the theme of a story, right? It's actually more like a general outline type thing... I should know this, I've taken two writing classes dedicated to this stuff..

Hello Kira,

No two writers work in the same way. Some start with an outline and "flesh out" the parts, and not always in story-order!

Some work by "inspiration flash" putting down the story as it comes that day.

Some work by verbalizing the story (telling it to someone), which is done best by having something recording what is said.

Some follow a character, writing the story from that point of view until it is done, and then taking another character and weaving them into the narrative of the other.

THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY to write!!!

I, myself, work best by talking it out to a friend or family member, with a tape recorder (or, in this day-and-age, a *digital* recorder, LOL) going the whole time. Then I set up the playback into the Dragon Dictate program and I have everything that was said ready to edit.

Oh, and I don't edit right away, I let the story flow for a bit first. My characters are usually pretty sure where the story is going, and if I try to micro-manage by editing immediately or too often, then they stop talking to me and "sulk".

My advice would be to relax, have fun with what you're doing. Let the characters or the story flow out each day, until you reach a natural stopping point. Breathe, stretch, then edit, organize, re-write.

Hope this helps!

i figured i could answer two of the examples since the second, being how names sound for characters, has no example. now please enjoy the following...

Writers Block! the easiest way to defeat this, the nastiest of foes, is to simply write. "BUT I JUST CANNOT FIND ANYTHING TO WRITE ROY!" wrong! just get a piece of paper and start writing as much as you can with a theme (ex. rhyming, metaphor, night, daytime, nature) it doesnt have to be on topic but when you fill a half, or the whole, page or so go back and read through it, you will probably find at least one line that you like. start up writing again and see how it goes, i have done this myself and actually put a pretty terrible poem together, if you want to read it i might be brave enough to post it here

I ahve a question. Am I allowed to write stories in the writers??? section?
PostPosted: Sun Jun 07, 2009 11:30 pm

As of right now, you can post stories in ConCrit section of the Writer's Den. I am working on adding new sections to this subforum, and one of those will be a place to post written work...it will be a little different than ConCrit. But either of those will do! smile
