I was planning on doing an EGL cosplay for the upcoming Anime Expo, but I keep hearing people talking about how only Asians should do lolita, and I'm not sure if I should do it anymore. Any thoughts on the Asian vs. Non-Asian cosplayer controversy?

If you want to go Lolita, do it! Cosplaying isn't about nationalities. Who cares if you're not Asian? The point to cosplay is to have fun, so go have fun!!!

Everyone looks good as a loli, not just Asians. XDDDD And don't let anyone try and deter you from wearing it, if that's what you want to do. :3

Psh, those people who say that non-Asians shouldn't cosplay need to go back to their nazi groupies and stay there. I mean sure, not EVERYONE may look good as a loli, but those certain people who don't look good in lolita clothing can very well be an Asian person too.
THE ONLY TYPE OF PEOPLE WHO I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH COSPLAYING LOLITAS:
Hairy men.
I've seen them, yes.
I'm not saying it's wrong---go ahead and do it, whatever floats your boat, but my personal preference? I don't want to see them.

Err! Those people make me so angry! They only look at race and not at the costume. Lolita looks good on different people, and race does not determine that. If you want to, then dress up and have fun! I am sure you will look amazing. heart

Lolita isn't cosplay, its a fashion, and some may even call it a lifestyle. But sure, go for it! Just be sure to choose a style that suits you, and remember that it ISN'T cosplay!!!

LOL I've seen hairy men go in Lolita before (Tekkoshocon '0 cool I thought he was a girl at first but then I looked down and was like WAUUUUGH!!!

What's really odd is that it's a Japanese style based off a European one, so perhaps Asians have the least amount of right to it.
Well, I shouldn't say least...I'm not being racist, but I do think that black lolitas look kinda funny...sometimes...but I think for them it's more a matter of attitude. Haven't quite exchanged their bling for petticoats.
(Holycrap I just realized I know somebody who posted on this thread and another probably lives in the same state...if anybody cares.)

I think that the whole "Americans shouldn't do Lolita" thing comes from so few Americans do it right. Asians just fit the profile better because they're small and look so young. Americans tend to either totally massacre the fashion or are so unbelievably snobbish about it ("well you're showing cleavage so you're not a Lolita. *shuns*") that American Lolitas get a bad rep.
However, if you think you can pull it off, go for it. razz Lolita is about having fun and looking your best while you do it!
