I NEED to go to Israel, before I drive myself crazy.
I'm going to Turkey in May for three weeks and I was thinking since I will be in the Middle East, I can catch a flight to Tel Aviv...
WELL, mother is going on about how it's dangerous and how I can't travel alone.
Do I try to convince her it's okay, or do I do something that she is very upset about me doing as well, which is spending MORE (much more) money and applying to Hebrew school in Jerusalem for a month in the summer.
As much as I would LOVE to study Hebrew in Israel, I would rather just go when I am in the Middle East as it is, and save a few bucks.
Why does my mother have to be so controlling?
Keep in mind I am an adult, I will be 21, and she is not paying for this one bit.

Certain areas of Israel are pretty safe that I hear; Tel Aviv and Haifa for example. I think that it would be best if you went to a safer city in Israel, then came back and showed your mom that you're stilling living before you venture off to a Hebrew school in Jerusalem some other time.
If Israel was really that dangerous, universities wouldn't have study abroad programs there for one. Funny how mothers seem to think that it's so dangerous though. . .

Actually, all of Israel is fairly safe. My problem is that mother is being a control freak. She's freaking out already that I will be near Iraq.
She freaked when she foundout I slept 25km from the Saudi Arabian border.

Oh lord, my mom hated when i went alone to meet Tom in England. She thought it was crazy to go alone and then meet a guy off the internet. Then she thought it was crazy me and him going to Scotland alone rofl She thinks the UK is a third world nation.

My advice for travelling alone is: "Never forget your towel!"
Really, Israel is a huge friggin fortress, there'll be nothing to happen to you, a colleague of mine recently hitchhiked through that area and came back in one piece.
If I like him or not is another story sweatdrop

So many people characterize the Middle East as being violent, unfriendly, and consisting of all desert. rolleyes Honestly, you do have a great opportunity. Remember to take pictures! razz

Okay so, I think I'm going to israel alone.
If any of you want to meet up with me or anything, let me know so I can plan everything.
I'm going to be leaving at the end of April, going to England for a couple of days then going to Turkey for class. After class (around May 27th) I think I am going to be flying to Tel Aviv.

I live there, and it's not as bad as it seems on the news. Now it's much more quiet than it was a few years ago. The odds for you to blow up on some bus are pretty close to none... People actually live here and it's generally a tourist-friendly place. The Muslim quarter in Jerusalem isn't really harmful, I can't recall the last time something happened there... Although every time I've been there we preferred not to travel alone and pay attention to everything and everyone, which is what you should probably do. I could show you around, maybe. 0.0 Where would you like to go? What kind of places?

Personally, I love northern Israel, but if you're not going to stay around too long maybe it doesn't worth the extra effort. In April I'm going back to my parents' house for a few weeks (they live pretty close to Tel Aviv, about 30 minutes by car), so I'll be in that area at the time... It could be cool to go on a trip too. smile

My family is freaking out about a similar trip I'm planning for over the summer (primarily Germany; we're currently arguing over whether I can detour a bit to Austria, France, or the Czeck Republic)...
Keep presenting them with evidence of it being safe. Show them crime statistics, if they're in your favor. Beyond that, good luck.
