PART TWO
IV & EV EXPLANATIONin the last part I metioned IVs and EVs a few times but didn't say what they are. Well EVs and IVs are what makes your butterfree stronger than the other guys butterfree. Don't be fooled though IVs and EVs names soud close, they are very different. So I will be explaining both individually. Over all this section should be pretty easy to understand. (and EVs can be really fun)
INDIVIDUAL VALUES (IV)
I'll start with IVs, IVs range from 0-31 and is harder to understand then EVs....
crying but still very important. Besides base stats IVs will most likely determine your pokemons strength and weakness the most. Like every thing else the starts are divided into the six parts- HP, attack, defense, sp attack sp defense, and speed. The sad thing about IVs though is that they are determined at the time of meeting/hatching (ouch) so theres not much you can do about IVs besides hatching or catching in bulk.... and then doing more math. Because I'm still trying to understand pokemon math better, this is a bit hard for me to explain, so most of the math and explanations I will be using are from serebii. So first I would like to recommend is when you are making your party hatch your pokemon as much as you can, they tend to be stronger then wild pokemon. Okay so here is the math instructions for finding IVs---
IV = ((Math.Ceiling(Stat / Personality Value) - 5) * 100 / Level Value) - 2 * Base Stat – Math.Floor(Effort Points / 4)
and for finding the HP IV the equation looks like this-
((Stat – Level Value - 10) * 100 / Level Value ) - 2 * BaseStat – Math.Floor(EV / 4)
.... okay so here is your equation, I'll try to explain things when I can right now the explanation is- when we have the numbers to put in it will look better. and about the math.ceiling / math.floor just means basically round up or down ceiling=up floor=down.(to the closest 10) for the personality Value you put in a number depending if the pokemons personality effects the stat, if it gives a +10% you put 1.1, if it will not effect you put in a 1, if it is -10% you put in .9. level value you just put in the pokemons level.
Next you look at your pokemon. on serebii they use fortress, so I'm just going to use their example.
Forretress 1
Level 43, Mild Nature
Hit Points: 121
Attack: 94
Defense: 114
Sp. Attack: 72
Sp. Defense: 57
Speed: 41
No EV's gained
Now how problem should look. Only try to find one IV at a time, for this your looking for attack. (going to put my notes in red to help out a bit)
IV = ((Math.Ceiling(Stat / Personality Value) - 5) * 100 / Level Value) - 2 * Base Stat – Math.Floor(Effort Points / 4)
again here is the equation without the numbers.IV = ((Math.Ceiling(94 / 1) – 5) * 100/43) – 2 * 90 – Math.Floor(0/4)
now put in the attack in place of the "stat" then the one with the first * is where they rounded up, second one is where the round down. because they are looking for attack mild nature will not effect that stat so in the "personality value" spot there is a 1. Then 43 is the level of the pokemon, easy. IV = ((89) * 100 / 43) – 180
this one and after are just the steps of solving the math, pretty self explanatory IV = (8900 / 43) – 180
IV = ~207 – 180
IV = ~27
ok so here is a number that is a just about your pokemons IV for the stat, it may be a lil bit higher or lower. so just compare your pokemon to find the best one. Remember these cannot be changed, so pick the best pokemon. and keep in mind that the HP equation is a lil bit different.
Effort Value (EV)
OK, this part is much better! EVs are the points you gain from batteling pokemon, thats right, you dont just gain exp for lvls! Every pokemon will start with 0 EVs in all stats.(from wild or egg) so as always your EVs go into your attack, sp attack, defense, sp defense, HP, and speed. anyways after you defeat your opponent, you get a certain amount of EV points put into your stat. you can gain a total of 510 EV points on one pokemon but can only have 255 on a stat- meaning that you can have two stats with 255 EVs, great! Typically a pokemon will give 0-4 EV points, BUT if you have an item like Power Weight (Hit Points), Power Bracer (Attack), Power Belt (Defense), Power Anklet (Speed), Power Lens (Special Attack), or Power Band (Special Defense) they will double the stat that they are used for, but will lower your speed (just while you have it on). another item you could use is macho brace, it will double all EVs given in battle. There is also something known as "poke'rus" its an illness that is very good to have and will give the same effect and work with one of the items too. as for the pokemon that give the best EV's, its a lot to write so here are the lists on serebii--
HP Attack Defense Speed Sp Att Sp Def The pokemon with
give EVs in more than one stat, keep that in mind because you'll most likely want to keep track of how many EVs your pokemon has in each stat.
