"I Am"
This song is really sad...but it's amazing. Ok, so the story is about a bari sax player in a High School band. He was a very bright kid, and everyone loved him. He wrote poems, the last he ever wrote was entitled "I Am." The day after he wrote this poem, he was driving to school and was killed in a car accident. The band commissioned this song in his memory. If you listen, you can hear his "spirit" in the baritone saxophone solos. The beginning of the song is his morning. It's supposed to show how happy and full of life he is. It builds until the fatal crash occurs. This part, you can actually visualize the crash while hearing it...and you'll know the car crash when you hear it because it builds up, boom (you can actually hear the horn of a car...maybe not in this recording, but in a good one you can), and it's silent. After this section it's very sad and gray. Then it gets happy because they are celebrating his life. This song is very touching and it makes you really think (but only if you know the story while listening to it.). The clarinet solos are very pretty and pull the piece together.
