Zero sighed. He was used to being on his own, but at the moment, the loneliness was really getting to him. He stood to his feet. 'Oh, something to do...' His thoughts were interrupted by a low rustling behind him. He turned and sniffed curiously. 'A rabbit maybe? ...No, a helix!'
"Hello?" He called tentively.

Celebrian had been traveling for days on end, with her pack, of course. But she couldn't help her frequent escapes from the watchful eyes of her parents. She loved adventure, loved to explore! Even if it meant danger. But, what the heck?! There was nothing that scared her!
Today was one of those exploring days. She had sense enough to stay close to the pack, but was now letting her curious nose get the best of her. Something smelled... weird. Like it was dead, and yet alive. Which made no sense at all, of course. But she had to follow it, had to! So she crept forward as quietly as she could, sneaking through a group of thick bushes... until she emerged from the leaves, and beheld what lay before her.
She screamed.

Before he knew what was going on, the atmosphere was filled with chaos and fear. His ears were flat against his head as the shrill voice, obviously belonging to a pup, pierced the air.
Zero yipped and jumped back, his fur standing strait up.
"Hey! Hey! What's the deal here?" He spat.
His head swiveled from side to side trying to find some sent that might indicate what was scaring the pup. He found nothing, and wanted to try and calm it.
"Are you okay? I don't think there's anything here but you and me..." He cooed. At least they seemed to have calmed down.

"The deal?! The deal is you! In case you haven't noticed!" Celebrian shot back, her ears flat against her neck and her little teeth bared. Her eyes ran over the strange Helix. He was drenched with blood, his bones stuck out in odd places, and he had no eyes! Why, he looked like he was straight from the grave! And he... stunk.
"Obviously there's nothing here, because you've probably scared everyone away!" she exclaimed, backing up a step. But he he didn't seem hostile... maybe just scared, like she was.
Her ears perked as she gained her wits, and she asked, quite rudely, "Um... why aren't you dead? This is a nightmare, isn't it? Oh gods, oh gods... man, mom is gonna kill me for this!" She paced back and forth, knowing that her mother wouldn't believe any of this nonsense.

Zero was taken aback. Her words were thorns in his cold heart. But he reminded himself, she was young and didn't know better than to speak so bluntly. Still, he slunked away slightly.
"Why aren't I... Uhh..." He started to repeat her question, but didn't know how to answer it.
"I realize I'm different, but nightmarish? Really that bad, huh? I mean..." he started mumbling in effort to explain himself, but he wasn't sure she was listening. She seemed to be babbling to herself, same as him.
"Mom?" He repeated. "Is your pack nearby? Well you don't have to be afraid of me if that's the problem here..." He straightened up and took a step toward her, slowly.

Celebrian ceased her heedless babbling when she noticed the zombie-like wolf take a step towards her. Her first thought was to run--of course, that's what any other wolf would have done. But Celebrian noticed the gentleness of his voice, the slightly confused tone that was comparable to her own. She tilted her head, studying him cautiously, then took a brave step forward to close the gap between them. She leaned forward, sniffing gingerly at the bloody fur, then gave a light little, "Hmm."
"That's strange. You don't smell evil... I think? But like I wold know what that smells like, right?" She gave a little giggle, her small voice playful and cheerful. "I guess I'm not afraid of you anymore, zombie-guy. You're actually kind of interesting."
Then she remembered his question, and replied almost sadly, "Yeah, my pack's nearby. But I don't want to go home right now." She paced in a small circle, then gasped as an idea came to her. She spun around and faced the other Helix, her eyes wide with eagerness. "Hey! I know! You can take me on an adventure!" she exclaimed.

"An.... adventure?" Zero was finding it hard to keep up with this little pup's emotions. Scared, loud, suspicious, doubtful, happy... And she obviously wasn't going to leave him alone. That thought made him weary, then he remembered his yearning for company, and something like a excitement came to him for a moment. It was a ridiculous idea, but something in him wanted it, and he wasn't going to fight it. Plus, her voice was just so happy. Who could refuse that?
".... It's Zero. My name I mean. Are you sure your kin won't mind us just going off? What adventure did you have in mind?"

"Zero... Why's that? You're not nothing, at least I think," Celebrian piped, her energetic voice confused. Then she grinned, and gave a playful wag of her tail as she said, "My name is Celebrian, but you can call me Cele, if you want to. My momma calls me that."
The realization that she was away from her pack hit her fully, and she suddenly exclaimed, "If I go back now, mom'll have a fit!! So, whether they mind or not, we've got to have a bit of fun, before I'm confined to the pack for a million days." She tipped her head and stared at a nearby tree, caught in concentration of soon to be adventures. Her little ears perked as one came to mind.
"I know! Lets go swimming! And we can try to catch the fish from the stream. That's always fun."

'Not nothing, huh?' He smiled warmly to himself. 'If you say so.' He thought.
"Celebrian," He whispered to himself, getting a feel for it. "That's a good way of thinking." He said more loudly to her.
"Swimming... okay, I like the water." It was something he could feel, more or less. "Although, I don't know if I can catch any fish... It's kinda hard for me." He mumbled excuses, just so he wouldn't disappoint her.
He lowered his head and sniffed around for the river, or a stream. Once he got the general direction, he broke off into a trot, assuming Cele would follow. He was impressed with her ability to keep up, and picked up the pace... still she followed right behind! He sensed she was enjoying this and he flat out booked it, keeping his ears turned back toward her, of course.
She was really effecting his emotions. He was... having fun. He smiled, a real smile, not his normal bitter smile.

Celebrian's tongue lolled out as she laughed, her little yet strong legs pumping as hard as they could. Man, Zero was fast, especially for someone who couldn't see where he was going! But he kept a good pace, and the challenge of the speed was invigorating for her, who's mother never let her do such dare-devilish things.
She couldn't help but notice the other Helix's happiness. It seemed like he wasn't used to such a thing, like he didn't experience it often. What a shame, especially for one so... awesome. Cele would just have to show him how to have some fun!
"I think I see the stream!" she shouted playfully, her little paws digging into the grassy ground. "I'll race ya to it!" Though she knew that she couldn't match Zero's speed, the hearty invitation made her feel all the happier. She hoped it did the same for him.

"Huh?" Before Zero could react, Cele picked up speed and flew fast him. He almost picked up the pas, but decided she was having too much fun, and let her stay ahead of him. Though He wasn't far behind when they plummeted into the water. Caught up in the excitement, Zero was splashing, jumping, and biting at the water playfully.
He sloshed toward the middle of the stream, wondering how deep it got. He could barely touch with the tip of his paws. He held his breath and immersed himself in the water. It felt so cool, so good! He came up and called, "Find any fish Cele?!"

Celebrian couldn't contain her childish laughter, and yet it felt so easy, natural, as if she had never had this much fun. Actually, she probably hadn't. No doubt that her mother would have never let her keep company of one like Zero... but who cared! She wouldn't tell, not since she had taken such a liking to this strange, yet slightly appealing helix.
She joined Zero in his excitement, batting the clear water with her paws. She dived as he did, and almost took a breath of water as she gasped in awe of the large trout swimming past. She rose to the top, not quite being able to touch, and replied quickly, "There's a huge fish under there! You should totally see it!" Then she realized the error of her words, and her ears dropped in shame. "I'm so sorry, Zero! I... I forgot, I didn't mean--Please, don't be angry with me!"
But, before she heard his reply, another idea came to her inventive mind. "Wait, I know! I'll catch it, then you can feel it! And then you'll know how big it is!"

At Celebrian’s words, Zero was reminded of his bitterness. Of course, he wouldn’t let her know; he knew it would upset her. So he slapped on a little smile and said, “Yeah, think you can get it?” He suddenly wished he knew what she looked like. He swam to the shallow end of the stream and shook of the excess water in his coat. He felt the warm sun on him, in contrast with the cool water. And he smiled for real. This had been the best day he'd had in a long while, why be pessimistic about it? He heard Celebrian splashing around and cheered her on.

"Of course I can catch it, silly!" Celebrian exclaimed, then dove under the surface of the stream. Once again, she saw the huge salmon, and her face lit with excitement as she started to follow it's graceful movements. She pushed herself faster as she neared it, then frowned as it suddenly darted behind a large boulder. Trying to keep her breath, she followed it, blinking her eyes in the clear water... and then she screamed, her breath expelled in a hundred sparkling bubbles, as a snapper turtle emerged from behind the boulder. She immediately turned towards the shore, and swam as fast as her little legs could push her. She finally emerged from the water, gasping for breath.
"Gah!! There's a monster down there, Zero! And it almost ate me!" she shouted, collapsing on the riverbank. Yet, as she caught her breath, she began to laugh. What a fool she must have looked like!
"Sorry, but I promise that I will catch it for you. Someday." She smiled up at the other Helix, her sides heaving in her laughter.

As he waited on the bank, Zero noticed that the temperature seemed to be dropping, and thought it might be getting late.
He was startled by Celebrian's frightened cry. "Cele?!" He called in alarm, and bounded toward her. But he slowed nearly to a stop when he heard her innocent laughter. He shook his head at her.
"You wear me out!" He exclaimed with an exhausted smile.
"Don't worry about the fish. Is it getting dark?" He added the last sentence as an afterthought. He almost asked if she would be staying with him a little while longer, but knew she had a pack to get back too. So instead he asked, "When do you need to be back to you pack?" Because at the thought of being alone and depressed again tomorrow, he spirits sunk.
