I've always been curious about what inspired everyone to create and play their character(s). Anything that inspires what you post for them? Any Easter Eggs that you throw in there that few people nod to? Any character trivia that will probably never come up in the RP? As time goes on, is there anything that further feeds that inspiration while you play out your characters? And what are your interpretations of other characters in OA? Without really divulging into potential spoilers, what makes your characters tick? How did you birth them into existence (so to speak...) I'll kick it off by starting with Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. The whole movie really was a heavy inspiration for Dorian + Co - specifically these scenes: A walk on the Marina. (and the scene that precedes it if anyone remembers from the movie.) A bit of the old ultra violence. (from 0:30 to the end)

Well, mine isn't nearly so cool and interesting. Truth be told, both Adelaide and Grietje were inspired by Noir. sweatdrop
I saw the RP had a delicate, female character, and that got my head rolling towards something opposite to that archetype. Adelaide, of course, came first, but Grietje came later, so they're both opposite sides of the same coin.
YOU NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED THEY WERE RELATED, WOULD YOU?
My goodness, if you think about it like that, they're practically family! XD

Rachel is an incarnation of an old Pern fanclub character. That character was inspired by the Brady-Bunch-esque attitude that permeated the club at the time -- she brought a bit of drama to it. XD
Cori's inspiration was the need for a villain. Her personality comes from a few girls I went to high school with, and several grown women I've encountered in fandom.
Piet, I wanted to do the victim turned victimizer. His coloring is a deliberate inversion of the anime stereotyping of pink and purple. blaugh
I may come back to this later -- I have limited time on Sunday.

Hey, cool topic idea, Bari! xd I can't remember exactly how I came up with Adrian. I just remember being harassed by Ivy to make a council member for this new RP, and so I was in a bit of a rush to come up with something interesting. blaugh In retrospect, I think I was thinking of Utena, and her motives for wanting to be a "Prince" and crossdressing and all that. I took that basic idea and warped it into something much darker. If Juri is a jaded version of the princely Utena, then Adrian is that to the extreme. Her "princely" traits have just distorted into something dark and dangerous. I do tend to enjoy bizarre angst, but I never knew Adrian's psychosis would get THIS out of hand. Most of the time I feel like I'm not really writing Adrian, she writes herself. Which is kind of scary, really. Getting in character for Adrian brings me in touch with a dark side I don't always realize is there. She's also based on several very screwed up friends/exes/characters. Most notably, part of her past was inspired by a scene in "Ma Vie En Rose," a French movie about a little boy who wants to be a girl. Unfortunately I can't find that specific part online, but this might also give some insight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r3CPsVKgxsI'm sure I've mentioned this before, but Charlie was completely ripped off from this minor (and apparently, very unpopular) character from Bleach: She's pretty much the exact opposite of Adrian in almost every way, which is why she appealed to me. I wanted to have a character to balance Adrian out, and Adrian didn't really give me the opportunity to RP really comical or ridiculous scenes the way Charlie does. Sofie is weird. I really don't know where she came from, honestly. XD But at the time that I made her, I was working on a story that involved a really bitchy blind girl, and so I took her and made her a little more elegant and tolerable. She's inspired by my life in Vienna, where I really delved into classical music and operas, since my best friend had an Opera singer for a mother and a composer/conductor for a father. I like Sofie because she has a different sort of strength than Adrian's beserker nature or Charlie's stupid bravery. And unlike the other two, she is much more subtle in the way she acts, which is kind of a breath of fresh air when playing two dramadrama freaks like Adrian and Charlie. XD That's not to say she doesn't have her own crazy bizarre angst story. I have a feeling that will begin to unfold relatively soon. I'd like to say she's the most normal of the three, but that's not really saying much, lol. All I know is that she's the most difficult for me to get in character for. When I created her, I liked the idea of having a character to has to fight to prove herself daily, because people always judge her based on her appearance, which is something that she ironically can't see herself. That's one of the only things about her I can personally associate with to some extent. I'm not a tiny petite little girl, I'm not extremely mature for my age, and as an artist, my life revolves around the visual world. So, in a way, I made Sofie as a challenge to myself.

Dreamwhisper Cori's inspiration was the need for a villain. Her personality comes from a few girls I went to high school with... lol, rofl sounds like some people I know. Were they good friends of yours, Dream? For Rachel I had to google it - are you referring to Dragonriders of Pern? I always thought Piet was going to turn out to be a Mikage-like character with his creepy tarot cards - I'm not gonna lie, I had a theory lol. Grietje Smit Truth be told, both Adelaide and Grietje were inspired by Noir. DON'T LIE TO ME! Hahaha xd , seriously, Noir? Wow I really wouldn't have come to that conclusion. How'd you pick out what they'd look like? Yam. Charlie is not just simply... ripped off haha give her more credit than that.

Grietje Smit Truth be told, both Adelaide and Grietje were inspired by Noir. Barentine DON'T LIE TO ME! Hahaha xd , seriously, Noir? Wow I really wouldn't have come to that conclusion. How'd you pick out what they'd look like? Weeell, they're both opposites in a way. Adelaide first: Noir was soft, small, neat, and had feminine features, I think, if I recall the description right. Everything Adelaide isn't, really? XD Adelaide is tall, built more heavily, not as neat with her hair or looks. She's plain in the face, too, with more square features than Noir's. And if I couldn't say 'plain', then I'd have to say 'more handsome than beautiful'. Greitje was meant to be a more directly opposing force to Noir, as opposed to Adelaide who was just an opposite, especially in personality, so maybe that's why I always pictured her as being physically similar to Noir. I hardly had to think about it, really. She's small, has nearly the same hair style (w/o the bangs), isn't quite as graceful a figure, probably, but is a little more severe in the face. That's probably why I figured she'd have black hair, more of a contrast with Noir's. Too bad Noir left after I made her though. sad I had been hoping for some interesting scenes with her.

Color the World Too bad Noir left after I made her though. sad I had been hoping for some interesting scenes with her. Damn! That does suck... In a perfect world, what would you have planned out with her, and how would you have seen it going down? Now I'm all curious. ( And no offense to Noir, but I think Greitje's cooler 3nodding )

Barentine Yam. Charlie is not just simply... ripped off haha give her more credit than that. Ok then, maybe she was also inspired by: SHIZURU and CHIZURU!? THE PSYCHO LESBIAN SUFFIX!? Ok, she wasn't based off Shizuru at all. I watched Mai Hime long after making up Charlie. And they really don't have much in common at all. xd I did even base Charlie's name of Chizuru's, though. But that character was just a springboard, really. I made Charlie because I really, really needed some comedy relief after playing Adrian's doom and gloom all the time. Charlie was made as a clown character, but she's gotten a more human side to her now, which I'm glad for. I don't really know where the decision to make her have this weird incestuous tendency towards her mom came from. Again, I think I just have a love for creepy/bizarre angst. Oh, and of course, Vesuvious was inspired by the strip club in the computer game of Vampire the Masquerade. Charlie's mom is also somewhat similar to my favorite character in the game, both in looks and her severity. Except that that particular character is a Malkavian vampire who has a split personality, believing she is both an uptight businesswoman named Therese and her slutty younger sister. Here's a blurb on wiki about these characters: Quote: Therese and Jeanette (Tourette) VoermanJeanette, a Malkavian, is the game's signature character whose likeness is displayed on the game’s box. She can be found in Santa Monica at the Asylum club, which she runs with her sister Therese, the Baron of Santa Monica, a Malkavian who fancies herself a Ventrue, as evidenced by her lofty attitude and hatred for the Nosferatu. They share an interesting love-hate relationship and, as the player eventually discovers, the same body. Jeanette turns out to be a personality concocted by Therese as an escape from the sexual abuse she endured at the hands of her father made real by the Malkavian traits of vampirism. The player is given the opportunity to either help destroy ("kill") one of these personalities or to help the two sisters reconcile and coexist peacefully. The resulting merged personality is referred to as Tourette in the game documentation. It is possible for characters of either gender to sleep with Jeanette, depending upon the choices made by the player in dealing with her, the most important of which is to ensure Jeanette survives intact. It's also possible for Therese, alone, to be saved. So... in a way, that's sort of like Charlie and her mom's relationship in a whole new light? lmao. xd

Barentine Damn! That does suck... In a perfect world, what would you have planned out with her, and how would you have seen it going down? Now I'm all curious. ( And no offense to Noir, but I think Greitje's cooler 3nodding ) Hee! Thank you! biggrin Well, at the time, Noir was a council member, albeit one that was having authority issues at the time (if you remember). Grietje was basically going to go through the same motions she did in the beginning, collect some info, and try to replace Noir with herself. What I was looking to have happen was more of a 'battle' between Grietje and Noir. Grietje would have been trying to replace her, and that's a threat to her both as a Council member and as a Duelist, so I wanted a sort of step-up from Noir, instead of rolling over and playing dead. Grietje would have continued for a bit to try to find ways to kick Noir off because to Grietje she seemed inherently incapable, but if she still failed after a while, I would have been fine with that. Or! Or, or! She could have succeeded and then Noir got her position *back* by removing Greitje! Somehow. I'm an ideas man! XD I can't work out details! Either way, their very diametric personalities would have been fun, I think, with Grietje more or less blandly pointing out Noir's perceived flaws to her face. (Grietje wasn't designed to be a nice person. XD Though sometimes I don't know what she is now. ) What I think would have happened.... would be that, because Noir was a duelist, she would have ended up like Adrian was for a while. Duelist, but not a Council member. If she stepped up, gained a backbone, fought back, and stopped being meek, she could get control again and more or less show that Grietje isn't the be-all, end all of Treasurers Everywhere. God knows, she'd probably be better at being sociable than Grietje with confidence. Of course, that would have been difficult for Noir, but I had some Noir-self-drama in mind for it all. Hence, Grietje loses the battle, over all, and has to figuratively lick her wounds, grumble to herself about pride, and return to math class, and be satisfied that Noir at least improved herself. However, because Noir was so very... uh... non-confrontational? I'm not sure that Akio could have ever brought her back to the Council for a good reason. (Then again, he brought Derrick back!). On the surface, Grietje was designed to be more capable than Noir, and she is efficient. She would have tried to grind Noir into the ground with polite niceties, offers to tutor her in math, and more or less keep Noir shoved to the side so that she could Be Superior and Do The Job. (Grietje was more egotistical originally, now she's just efficient. I should bring her ego back more. XD It's fun to think about.) Unless Noir had outside help (Issac, Maarten... anyone?), I think the second one would have happened after time.

I knew it Yam, Charlie and her Mom are Vampires. It's cool how you spun it and made it a little more realistic and relevant to be applied to a ...fake-real life setting? lmao. Interesting insight, Color :0 that would have been really cool to watch play out... it's a shame it didn't really work out sad ! I guess that's what happens though... we've been kicking 'round for 4 years now? and have gone through, like, a ton of character drop outs and all sorts of different 'story moods'... I think this 2 month time skip can freshen things up again. Grietje Smit Grietje wasn't designed to be a nice person. XD Though sometimes I don't know what she is now. Don't be discouraged! Listen, can't you hear it? If your soul has not truly given up... you should be able to hear... Grietje somewhere, maybe that little voice in the back of your head, telling you what she should do. I would love to see some more ego floating around (as if we don't already have enough of it? xd ) I guess at this point there would need to be a motivational drive? It sucks about Noir, especially since she dropped out and you had all this awesomeness planned. You're right, I think the character was way too subordinate - it would have been a cake-walk for Grietje to stuff her to the side. Kudos to mean people btw, they get my stamp of approval.
