Welcome to my broad-sighted guild all about science and anything having to do with thought, philosophy, or contemporary issues!

I'm the Captain, Jerba. I have my own little quirks, just like everyone. I'll try to be as helpful as I can!

Here are just a few rules for you to look over. I know you'd follow them anyway, but I just wanted to remind you. wink

Try to avoid foul language, swear words, or any inappropriate content. It can be rude, and some people are very sensitive.

Don't make fun of people or target them in a negative way.

Don't abuse your privileges of changing the subject quickly. We like to stay on relevant things, rather than doing stupid things like announcing every time you go to the bathroom. (Please, we don't need to hear it.)

Don't post extensive or redundant jibberish. It takes up space and scrolling and loading new pages isn't fun.

This guild is about contemporary issues, science, and philosophy, and all categories relative to life. Please stay on topic.

Don't be afraid to have lots of fun! Get into an interesting discussion, and ask some questions about other people's ideas or about things you've always wondered. Now's your chance to get some answers!

This is a guild for everyone! The only qualitifcation is that you follow the rules.

As a side-note, I don't hold grudges. If you break any of the rules, I won't bust you unless it's really, really bad. You'll be forgiven for mostly anything, 'cause we all do stupid or inconsiderate things online once in a while. I don't have a blacklist, so the only way I'll kick you out is if a lot of people notice and don't like it.

And besides, I don't think I can actually "kick anyone out." It's a public guild, so there isn't much of a difference between members and non-members.

Oh, and if you ever come to this guild more than once, just become a member!

It'll be easier to get to the guild, and you'd be able to hear announcements or stuff. And I may be willing to give promotions to good members.

Don't be afraid to give a join request. I won't mind any new people, and I won't try to plague you if you're one of few members.

Hi. I'm a new member, and I have a few problems with some of these rules.

Jerba
...don't use foul language or swear words. It's mean and it doesn't make friends.

This doesn't make sense. I cuss all the damn time, so do a lot of my friends. They're just words, and it's rather obvious when they're being used to offend, and when they're just being used.

And then there's the fact that people have filters.

A chat thread would probably help.

You too, Vince?

And yeah, I also have a problem with that. If I want to curse, I will curse, if you have a problem with that, Gaia's got a filter that you can turn on. I curse quite a bit too (especially when faced with something absolutely ridiculous or stupid), and I don't like having to be politically correct if it means sacrificing my ability to get my point across.

HIs guild,. His rules. Not everyone has such a limited mental capacity that they think they have to swear to get their point across.

What I am saying is, it will probably do people good to go without swearnig here. If you have the burning urge, just do it elsewhere, it's not hard, is it?

I see the cursing thing as a non issue myself. Not everyone does, nor does it seem the guildmaster does, so I will try to refrain from it, at least in overabundance. Got to show some respect for the guy whose house you're in.

I know people who cuss twice as much as I do, and could absolutely crush me in debate.

The fact that someone cusses is no indication of their intelligence, and frankly, it's rather dumb of you to assume as much.

How exactly will not swearing help, when swearing doesn't detract from discussion?

(I love constructive criticism.) Yeah, I should really consider all that. I do swear sometimes......

I just believe it would be fun for people who constantly cuss to try out not swearing for a while.
There are words you can use other than "******** never really saw words like that as very intelligent.
usually because they are in sentences for..

a) noobs - lolol f** u gd i did a big s**t

b) people with NO roleplaying skills - He ******** her.

c) People who are mentally unable to control themselves in an environment with children around, swearing like hell around 2 year olds and such.

d) Flaming. "******** you, you are an idiot and no one likes you"
I don't care how wordy you make it, flaming is just stupid -_-

usually, when swearing is used, it portrays aggravation in the writing, or anger at the other person.
The other persons gonna get offended
then the two would be talking about how, why, and why said person should not be offended, or it just turns into a big, silly flame war..

It was just an Idea. I quite like the thought of constant swearers actually attempting to give it a kick for once, see how they would word things differently. *Shrugs*

You should strike the "and" in the opening post immediately preceding the already stricken "owner." As it is, the line reads, "I'm the founder, and Jerba."

Just a minor nit.

Jerba is actually shorthand for "don't you forget it".

On the topic of swearing: I refuse to give up the right to use English's only widely-recognized infix. Sure, I probably will never use it since most of the time swears provide 0 linguistic information, but that infix is one of the few interesting pieces of English grammar and I will not have it banned from this guild.

I won't lie, I curse quite frequently myself. redface I'm trying to rid myself of that though, just 'cause, I don't know... I'm not really ever offended if someone throws out a swear word at me; I'm vastly anti-censorship, and at the same time... *shrug*

Can't really explain, I just feel it's one of my not so admirable habits.
Such as when I crack all kinds of joints in my body.
