The usual quiet sounds of the lake -- soft distant birdsong, the gentle lapping of water on the shore -- were hardly disturbed by Rook's passing. Indeed, the Delta buck was almost silent, save for the soft jingling of the object he had held in his mouth. It was one of the recently retrieved stockings, partly full of bottlecaps, along with other collected small trinkets -- sparkly stones, interesting bits of shell, pieces of Guardian trash... anything, really, that Rook could find. He was working his slow and steady way towards the lake shore, pausing every stride or two to pluck an object from the stocking and lay it down. The ultimate result? A weaving line of small sparklies, starting at some distance from the lake where the thicker meadow grass grew, right down to the sandy edge. In addition, the buck was making a rather awkward attempt to hide his own hoofprints, using his tufted tail almost like a broom. Not that it worked especially well, but better than nothing.

Apparently satisfied with his handiwork, Rook withdrew some distance and settled down behind a patch of brush, folding his legs beneath himself and watching intently through the tangle of twigs and leaves.

Where there were sparklies there was always a certain Pearl Herla that followed. Only this time he was not alone as he continued to duck his head of a strange creature that poked her head from behind the Herla's white ears. Looking up with a pout, Iris continued walking toward the lake his intention to take a dip but of course the well laid out trail of sparkling objects distracted him fairly well. Coming across the first trinket he bent his head nipping it lightly between teeth only to find his strange new Mion companion standing in front of him tugging on it herself. "Leggo..." he wailed blinking with a frown. Of course Rene would have none of that, instead she pulled with all her might which in turned had the Herla do the same. This only began a strange game of tug-o-war which Iris would eventually win out as he lifted his head making Rene hang from the trinket securely.

With a sigh of annoyance, Iris flung his head causing Rene fly into the air violently. Watching her a moment, Iris eventually moved under her to catch the Mion on his back. "Don't do that... okay? We can collect them together." With a soft smile Iris pulled his stocking from his side reaching behind him to hand it to Rene. "I'll pick them up and you hold this so I can put them in." The Mion nodded seeming to understand giving a light peep. "Good." Iris smiled still a bit apprehensive about the critter but unable to get rid of it otherwise.

They worked their way down to the lake, following the trail of sparkling objects without incident. It never crossed either Herla or Mion's mind that the trail was laid out a little too detailed. By the time Iris had picked up the last trinket the weight of the stocking Rene was holding was easily felt. "I think we got them all." Sitting near the lake's edge he folded his legs under him letting Rene down to which both began rummaging through the stocking to admire their new treasure. "It's so pretty!"

"Peep!"

Rook shifted his legs beneath himself and resisted the urge to give up altogether and do something more interesting. Like have a quick swim in the awfully inviting-looking lake... But no, he'd taken the time to lay out the trail, he might as well see if it worked. His Guardian chimed in with a soft laugh -- (curiouser and curiouser, my dear, in these days it seems the deer hunts the lion... then again, a very clever deer and a very small lion... ) She had been the one to suggest the lake as a good spot, out in the open and with the water nearby -- could Mions swim? Rook wasn't sure. But out here, it would be easier to spot the creature that had been surreptitiously following him since the day they had retrieved the stockings. It was certainly quite fast; every time he'd tried to get a bead on it before, it had darted away into hiding.

Still, with the trail of shinies laid out oh-so-invitingly, and Rook himself hiding and making no noise or movement, perhaps eventually the little creature wouldn't be able to resist -- (
here come the Lion and the Unicorn, fighting for the crown -- is this what you wanted?).

There was no mistaking the glimmering white figure moving down the beach. Rook noted in dismay that Iris was pausing every few feet to pick something up... oh dear. Abandoning his hiding place, Rook scrambled to his feet, feeling a few twinges from having been sitting in one position for so long. "Ah -- excuse me --" He trotted forward just as Iris was sitting down by the water's edge, clearly having run out of trinkets. Oh well... He hadn't been particularly hopeful as to the trap's success, anyway, and at least this way he got a little decent company out of the deal.

Rook managed a small rueful smile as he bobbed his head in greeting. "Hello, Iris. Out for a swim with your new companion?"

Looking up at the voice Iris gave a slight frown the same as Rene who scurried to collect all the shiny trinkets. "H-hello." This Herla was called Rook, Iris had remembered and stood to his full delicate height. "I was going to go swimming but I got distracted." He blushed picking at the stocking filled with shiny trinkets. "Look at all of the shinnies! Someone left them laying around." Rene gave a peep in agreement hording a small pile of her own at Iris' feet looking as if she were not going to give them back. "Um... they were laid out so neatly... are... this yours?"

If a blush would have shown through his crimson fur, Rook would have. Instead he simply tossed his head slightly in a dismissive gesture at Iris' question. "Well, they were, but don't worry about it -- they were just random things I picked up." If the trinkets were interesting to Iris and the little Mion, well, at least someone was happy. Rook was hardly going to begrudge them their treasure, not after they'd gone through the trouble of picking it all up. "I was just trying to -- well, see, something has been following me for a while. I think it is another Mion, but I cannot be sure... It is quite shy, and runs away when I try to get a good look. I was hoping that here, I could catch it off-guard for a moment." He sighed. "But it does not seem to want to come out today."

Iris gave a soft intake of breath, "Oh... t-these were yours?" He felt bad about having taken them but the buck didn't seem to mind so much. Turning a questioning look to the other Herla, the Pearl wondered what kind of Mion was out there following Rook. "Maybe you could ask...Rene?" Well so much for that thought, looking around the little Mion was no where to be found. Had he finally rid himself of the strange creature. "Rene? .. oh no what if she's lost! Rene!" Turning in a circle Iris dropped the stocking of goodies and began moving frantically along the shore, only stopping when a thicket of bushes began shaking. "Rene?"

"Peep!" The Mion scuttled out holding a shiny object she dipped back into the brush only to return again pointing in the direction that yet another bush was shaking. "Oh did you find something? Be careful it might eat you." Rene frowned not believing everything would eat her like Iris did but moved over to the bigger creatures just in case. "Peep!"

Rook's ears perked up with interest. "Rene -- is that her name? She's quite pretty." Indeed, the Mion seemed to suit Iris particularly well, Rook couldn't help but notice, even to the point that they had been fighting over "shinies" earlier... A small smile crossed his face for a fleeting moment. Perhaps it would be nice to have a regular companion -- one who was corporeal and didn't make it a personal goal to confuse him, anyway.

"Er, do they require care? I mean, I assume they are capable of finding food and the like, seeing as they were living wild before, but..." Rook was distracted by Rene's return, and her pointing to another bush. How odd. Were the Mions more intelligent than Rook had initially given them credit for?

Within the shaking bush crouched a ball of yellow and gold fluff, watching the two Herla and the other Mion with wide, curious eyes.

Iris sighed when Rene had returned looking at the bush curiously. Moving up just beside Rook the Mion was curled up in a ball of fluff. Smiling Iris looked to Rook nudging him forward. "It looks kinda cute... um..." Still a bit weary of the creatures, Iris remained at a distance. Rene, however, slipped close peeping quietly to the other Mion. She didn't know this one but was curious and hopeful for perhaps another friend. Hanging around Herla all day got a little lonely especially when the chosen Herla was dead set on stealing all her shinies. "Where you looking for this Mion?" Iris asked.

The little yellow Mion shivered a little as Rene drew closer, but peeped an apprehensive response. Mane fluffing slightly, he slowly came out into the open, gazing up at the two Herla.

Rook lowered his head to get a good look at his erstwhile stalker-pet. "Oh... So you're the one who's been following me..." He called softly to Iris, "Is this how you met Rene? Did she just start following you, or...?" There was a great deal he didn't know about the Mions, and he was hoping that Iris could at least shed a little light on the matter.

Iris gave a great shake of his head. "She just wouldn't go away but she wasn't as shy as this one. I guess they are different in the way they stalk us... but if they like you it appears they will stick around." He offered. "I think Rene likes my shininess." This much he couldn't blame the Mion for but it didn't mean he was an object to be admired. Though with time the two seemed to get along okay and even managed to form a slowly growing bond. He'd hate to see the little creature harmed. "Say hello." Iris encouraged.

Rene peeped back at the other Mion pointing to Iris with a grunt. 'My herla', was practically her statement as she stood before the other with a proud snort.
