History: Born to Snappy Elmer and Sadie C, Coconut had a rocky start at life. Once she was old enough, she and her sibling, Sassafras, was sold to the owner of a pet shop. Once she found her place at the pet shop, she was extremely nervous and hesitant towards people. When people wanted to see her, she would coward in the corner of the cage and did not want anything to do with them. Days had passed on and she was the only one left in the cage. Both her sister and cage mate were sold. One worker, Amanda, had instantly fallen in love with the little puppy. Whenever she would go on breaks, she would take Coconut out to either play with her or just hold her and give her some love. Coconut seemed to open up more to people then and at that moment, it seemed like love. Whenever Amanda would come into work, Coconut would wait patiently for her and would get excited whenever she saw the girl's face or even hear her voice. But one day, things took a turn for the worst.
Coconut started to not feel so good. It started with throwing up, having the runs, and all together, she stopped eating. The worst part of all was when anyone would touch her mouth, she would scream bloody murder. The vet came in and examined her and found out what the problem was. Westie Jaw, a condition in Westie's as well as some other dogs where the bone in their jaws continues to grow one on top of the other, causing severe pain to the dog. The vet decided that the only way to calm her suffering was to give her steroids and see what happened. Over time, she had her good days and her bad days. At one point, she had gotten really bad that the owner of the shop was considering putting her to sleep. After hearing what may become of this poor creature, Amanda told her parents the situation. After much begging and crying, they decided that they were going to take her. Amanda and her family would not stand for such a dog to be put to sleep when something could possibly be done. After doing some research on the Westie Jaw disease, Amanda and her mother found out that westies who have that can get surgery. That was an option they were willing to make when they were going to take Coconut. However, the next vet visit seemed to show some signs of a miracle.
It appeared the Westie Jaw was gone. Coconut began to run around, bark, bite, and even started to eat again. The vet said that she was all right to be put back onto the floor to get sold but that wasn't going to be the case here. A few days later, Amanda and her family took Coconut into their home as a new member of the family. Not only did she have Coconut, but Amanda also owns a dog named Chloe. When Coconut arrived, Chloe was a bit hesitant towards her and did not want pretty much anything to do with her. When Coconut tried lying next to Chloe to sleep, Chloe would get up and walk away. The family knew that Chloe would have to get used to the fact that there was a new dog in the house and eventually, she did. Days pasted and Coconut was fine. She was playing like any normal pup would play and she was just living life to the fullest. Though at times, she would get dehydrated so Amanda had to give her water by a syringe. Then all of a sudden, Coconut began to act strange.
She wouldn't eat. She looked gloomy and didn't bark as much. And alas, when her mouth was touched, she screamed. Amanda feared the worst. The Westie Jaw came back. The moment it came back, Amanda and her mom took Coconut immediately to the vet's office. The vet took some blood tests and took an x-ray of her jaw. This was the first case of Westie Jaw the vet had come across, though she had knowledge and could answer any questions that the family might of had. The vet gave Amanda and her mother a stronger steroid for Coconut and said that we should give it to her every day and over time ween her off. Days went by. Weeks and even months. Amanda and her family began to ween Coconut off of the medicine and no longer did she show signs of the disease. Eventually, it went away completely. To this day, if you were to see Coconut and know about the pain that she went through, you wouldn't even tell that she had Westie Jaw.
