Here's the premise- you're on a late-night trip by train that's only supposed to take four or five hours. Instead, the train gets stuck in a snow storm an hour out from the station and has to stop until the storm clears up and the ice can be removed from the tracks. So- what happens during the 15 hour time span while you're stuck on the train? And what happens once everyone departs?

This is a literate role play. That means I want complete sentences, written in past tense preferably, and proper grammar. Other than that, go wild! Character outlines aren't necessary. Just have fun writing the story as it goes!

Rules-
-No god-modding

-No powers or anything like that- this is modern day, normal people stuff. Sorry!

-Obey Gaia TOS- no cybering, keep cursing to a minimum, etc. Use your best judgement. You know what's appropriate and what's not!

-You can play multiple characters, just don't go insane. Keep it to two or three, okay?

-(added 02/22/2009) Please post a picture for your character in your first post. Since there is no character outline, we need something to go off of as a reference for age and basic appearance.

-I will periodically post a pole to see if people think we should move on to the next hour. It'll be a majority-count vote. Keep in mind- fifteen hours. That's all. When the train hits the station, we wrap it up and call the RP completed. Okay?

-If there's anybody who thinks we should switch hours before I post the pole, let me know. I'll post the pole and put it to a vote immediately!

-In the event everyone votes to keep the RP on the hour it's currently on (ex-Hr 12, hr 3) they will have one week to wrap up what ever they wanted to get accomplished in that hour. After that, I will change it automatically.

Katie groaned when she heard the conductor's announcement. I hate trains, she grumbled to herself. With a sigh she got up and went back a couple cars to the food car to grab another over priced Mt. Dew. She flirted with the idea of getting something of the more alcoholic persuasion, being just barely legal, but rejected the idea when she asked how much it would cost her. The two dollars for a can of soda was outrageous in the first place but eight dollars for something she couldn't even get drunk with? Forget it. She took her can and cup of ice back to her seat and pulled a book out of her duffel bag, tucking wayward strands of her long, chocolate colored hair behind her ears and out of her eyes.

Tobias stirred form the shallow nap he had fallen into. He didn't hear the conductor's announcement because of the headphones nestled in his ears. It was the lack of motion, strange as that was, that roused him. The swaying of the train was what had lulled him to sleep and now...it wasn't there.

"What's going on?" He asked the older woman in the seat in front of him, puling one earbud out, but leaving the other in place.

"There's ice on the track, apparently. We're stuck here until it's safe to move." She turned back to the computer she had sitting on the tray in front of her, effectively dismissing Tobias as she resumed her frantic typing. He shrugged and popped the other earbud back in place before grabbing his wallet and heading back for a soda and a sandwich in the dining car.

(This looks fun.)

Mattie sighed as he glared out the window. As if he didn't hate winter enough already. "So much for visiting my brother on his birthday," he said softly to himself. There was a small, beautifully wrapped present on the seat next to him.

"Is it a special occasion?" Katie asked, leaning over the aisle to ask the guy on the other side of the train about the small, wrapped box next to him. Her book wasn't as good as the cover mad it out to be, and she was getting bored fast.

Well, this is exciting, Tobias thought, staring out the train window. Not that there was much to see, it was night and they were in the middle of nowhere. And there was s thick white sheet of snow falling not two inches from the window. He slumped back in his seat and let his thoughts drift.

He looked up at the woman speaking to him, then down at the gift. "My brother's birthday." He pushed a long strand of dirty blond hair out of his thin face. His eyes were naturally narrow and a cold blue. "I got off work early to get there in time for his party too..." He looked down at the cellphone sitting in his lap. There was no service and his battery was half dead. "Just my luck..."

"I'm sorry," Katie said, biting her lip. "How old will he be turning?" she asked. Her eyes followed his hand, meeting those icy blue eyes, a stark contrast to her warm, chocolate brown. Katie liked eyes, they weren't called the windows to the soul for nothing.

"Don't worry about it." He sighed and scratched his head. "I think he's going to be seventeen. It's been a while since I last saw him." The loose braid he kept most of his hair in just laid across his green sweater's shoulder as he leaned back against his seat. "Guess I'll just have to surprise him tomorrow." His eyes were clear, but dull.

((I'm not even sure where to come in in The Aftermath, it kinda took off lol!))

Katie bit her lip, wondering what she could do. The man sitting in front of her seemed so sad, but he was nothing more than a stranger with a brother who was having a birthday. "How long has it been since you saw him? she asked softly.

Tobias finally got up form the table he had claimed in the dining car and made his way back to his seat. Everything was where he left it, though there wasn't really anything of value to take.

He shrugged. "I really couldn't tell you. It's been a few years. My mom took him far away. She told me I could visit whenever I wanted, but either I didn't have the money, or I didn't have the time." He shrugged and sat up a little straighter again. "What puts you on this train?" He was feeling awkward talking with this woman. She was asking questions, but he wasn't.

"I'm visiting a friend for the week. She lives in the city, so she suggested I just take the train and she'll pick me up at the station rather than me driving and having to pay outrageous parking prices," Katie looked at her phone and sighed, "and I'd call her to say we' going to be late if my phone got any reception," she added softly. She looked back at the man and smiled. She got the feeling he didn't want to talk much more, but she couldn't help herself. "Where's your final destination?" she asked. She was tempted to move over and just sit next to the poor guy, but she restrained herself.

"The city. I guess it was decided that partying in the town they live in was no fun, so they booked a hotel room for a couple days." He looked over at her and held out a hand. "I'm Mattie."

Dark grey eyes fluttered open and were looking directly at the ceiling of the car through pale, dyed-green bangs. With a groan, she sat up and stretched, sighing with relief as her back popped. She looked out the window and frowned at all the snow and ice. "Man. And I thought we'd been out in the boonies before leaving." She didn't even notice the man in the car, just a few seats down.

"I'm Katie," she accepted his hand with a broad grin spreading across her face. "Okay, so here's the thing," Katie finally got up the guts to move across the aisle and sit next to Mattie, "do you play cards?" she pulled a deck out of her purse, "because I get the feeling we're going to be stuck for a long while and we need something to do."

Tobias heard someone talking softly behind him, but dismissed it easily. He pulled a notebook out of his backpack and started scribbling in it, pausing every now and then to look around the car.
