What are Chocobos? Chocobos are a large, believed to be flightless bird that looks like a more feathery and much more appealing version of our ostrich. They come in a variety of colors, though are most primarily seen as a yellow color.
As a creature, they can be found out in the wild though Chocobo Farms are ever present. The most commonly known is located near Kalm and near the swamp where the rumored Midgar Zolom (a large snake) lives. This is an exceptionally large farm that is willing to sell Chocobo items, as well as rent Chocobos out and let them stay there at a nominal fee.
Chocobos are very social creatures and are used for many activities. Some use them as pets, others as mounts, and others for labor. They're incredibly fast, which makes them good also for racing, which is a high class sport in the Golden Saucer. Anyone can become a racer, so long as they have a Manager (read the Racing section for more information). These creatures interact with one another in a series of chirps and squawks, and often are viewed as being extremely annoying. However, though, if you've spent enough time with them, it's something you grow used to, and you get a loyal and trustworthy Chocobo in return.
Chocobos can be skittish, which makes it hard to catch and tame them. Spending a great deal of time with a Chocobo guarantees a great companion. Only by spending time with Chocobos will you be able to learn more and more about them.
Chocobo Growth A Chocobo starts off as an egg, and it stays in the egg for at least two days (at this point, you are allowed to ask us to hatch the Chocobo at any time) before it finally comes out. Afterwards, it becomes a Chick or a Chicobo for another four days before it finally matures into an adult (again, this is by request only so that people can properly RP if they wish to).

Chocobo Stats, Classes, and Types So much information and so little time to learn it in. No, you have all the time in the world to learn about Chocobos and this guide is here to help you out. If you're new to the world of Chocobos, this is the best place to start; the rest you learn along the way and with the help of more experienced owners, breeders, and an even the rumored Chocobo Sage.
Chocobo Stats
Chocobos Stats are something that can be ignored if you don't have any plans to become a Racer, but it's still some good information to know for raising the best kind of Chocobo there is! Stats are a predetermined set of numbers, usually gifted and determined by the parents' own. The better stats the parents have means better stats for the chick when it hatches. Stats are what determine how fast a Chocobo can run and for how long, as well as how intelligent it is and its Compatability with its owner (the latter of these does not come from the parents). Stats are not a permanent ordeal though. They can be raised by feeding a Chocobo Greens, which can be purchased from Chocobo Breeders, as well as stolen from monsters, or other means (such as trading). Some Greens will raise stats more quickly than others, but as a result are more expensive and / or rare.
Chocobo Classes
Classes are given to Chocobos the moment they are born, which starts at C, the lowest rank. These Classes are used to determine which race a Chocobo would take a part of if it were to be a racer. Classes also help in bringing about the best breeding in a Chocobo. There are three Classes: C, B, A, and S (from least to greatest). These Classes can be brought up by winning a certain number of races in order to progress to the next class. From C to B : Must win First Place in seven races. From B to A : Must win First Place in five races. From A to S : Must win First Place in three races.
Once you've reached S Class you can't go any higher.
Chocobo Types
Types are another birth determination that occurs entirely at random, even through breeding there is no guarantee that if two Wonderful Chocobos breed that they will produce a Wonderful baby (but there is a good chance they will). There are, in total, eight different Chocobo Classes, and they are listed from worse to best. - Poor - Weak - Fair - Average - Good - Mediocre - Great - Wonderful

Chocobo Breeding One of the funnest things about owning a Chocobo is being able to breed them. Through breeding you can acquire various colors, which includes the world famous Gold Chocobo, the best color out there. Breeding is a complicated process, but only if you are aiming to acquire a certain color. Very important factors come into play when it comes to trying to get exactly what you want.
DNA is something that cannot be discovered through any means of affordable testing at Chocobo Farms and Breeding Grounds. There are two types of DNA strands: Homo and Hetero. Depending on the combination of this DNA, along with the other three factors, you can end up breeding a great or possibly very bad Chocobo Chick. Things to know about breeding:
All partners must be male-female. Homosexuality is not known amongst Chocobos; natural way of partnership is the way to go. Each mating pair produces only two eggs, with rare occassions of three or four. Any classes, colors, and types can breed with one another. Chocobos do not mate for life but can choose to be paired with a single partner. Chocobos must both be fed half of a nut (which can be bought in a store, traded for, or found / stolen from monsters) in order to breed. The gestation period of the female Chocobo lasts five days. Chocobos cannot inbreed with one another. In order to get what you want you'll need to expand out to other owners. Chocobos can only breed twice a month and only after their first clutch has turned into adults.

Chocobo Racing Chocobo Racing is one of the most prominent sports in the world; it requires a lot of patience and dedication to breed and raise the perfect racing Chocobo. Racing is not only a hobby but for many it's also a career, and often people gamble on it as they would with other sports. The thrill of racing is what attracts racers and non-racers alike to watch the flurry of feathers run down a track.
Racing is held at the Golden Saucer with two specially created tracks. However, a third one is currently being built as an extension for the even more powerful racers to use. Its completion date is unknown. Anyone can be a racer, but all racers need to have a manager. A Chocobo owner can choose to be their own manager or their own jockey, or they can hire either one if they wish. Only adult Chocobos are capable of racing; the tracks are too dangerous for Chicobos to undertake. There is also four racing classes for the jockey to choose from though they are only capable of racing in their Chocobo's class.
The race is determined by a number of factors, most important of which are Speed, Stamina, and Compatability. Speed will determine how fast your Chocobo can run, Stamina determines how long they can go before they get exhausted, and the Compatability determines how well your Chocobo will listen to you during the race. All three of these stats can be improved by feeding your Chocobo greens and just being with it. The same applies to if you have someone race for you: they need to interact with the Chocobo in order for it to put forth its best effort and go for the win.
There are also four kinds of Walks for the Chocobo to use during the race, which is generally done on command by the jockey if the Chocobo listens to them. Walk, Jog, Run, and Sprint. Walking is the slowest Walk and Sprinting is the fastest, though Sprinting quickly will suck up your Chocobo's stamina if the jockey doesn't know how to ride correctly. If you push your Chocobo too hard it will become exhausted on the track and have to walk awhile before it is capable of doing anything else.
To learn more about how to race, please check the official Chocobo Racing thread.
