It was the greatest battle of her life yet! Raine's outstretched arms shook with effort, pushing back against the weight of the enemy. Would she be able to win? Suddenly she heard a creaking noise, and quickly looked over at the door where the strange girl appeared. The little ice Seraphii quickly pulled her arms back, the silvery wisps of the cloud that she sat upon gliding back an inch. As if in slow motion, the giant she had battled with fell down in a colossal motion.
Mist set down a saucer of water by the small child, smiling warmly, "Thought you might want some water." The gravity defying being lay before her in cold silence, which really didn't surprise Mist. Any attempts to speak to the girl thus far had been greeted with an apathetic glance, followed by the young ice Seraphii laying her head back down, long silver hair flowing forth across her pale features, hiding her eyes.
"Oh yeah, there's my cookie." Mist suddenly chirped, picking up Raine's former enemy and breaking off a piece of it, holding it out to Raine, "Want any?" The child stared at it for a few seconds, then proceeded in burying her face back into the safety of her cloud. While Mist loved a quiet atmosphere, having a quiet child about was a bit unnerving. She wasn't complaining, but weren't children supposed to be hyper and bursting with energy, not giving cold shoulders?
Sighing softly, Mist walked over to her bed and turned on the TV, holding the large cookie in her mouth. "There has been an increase in the activity of the sun over the past few days..." The TV droned on, though Mist only half listened in. She made sure to keep the volume low, as she had learned early on that Raine scorned loud noises. Last she heard, the neighbors were still trying to pull little shards of ice from the fur of their dog who had escaped into their front yard. Luckily enough, the cold wasn't something new to them in Alaska.
Mist was in Alaska only for a short while, however, to visit relatives before returning to Gaia. What worried her was the idea of Raine being unable to grow accustomed to socializing with anyone, especially if she was to move so soon after taking on guardianship. Her eyes fell back upon the TV, a smile suddenly flaring up as she realized what an increase in solar activity meant.
Raine peered out at the window, the edges of the glass decorated in crystallized mist, scars revealing the cold outside. She wasn't trying to push the strange woman away, yet she couldn't bring herself to accept Mist's offerings of kindness. Pride was not what held her back, but rather a type of anxiety. She had so many questions about the oddities of the room, a craving to learn, such as how the screen flicked to life without Mist even touching it, or the spinning contraption on the ceiling. Raine easily restrained herself, however, staring shyly at her hands.
"I want to show you something, is that alright?" Mist asked, suddenly crouched to Raine's eye level. Raine stared at her, at first surprised, then curious. She nodded her head silently, and Mist scooped the cloud between her hands, directing her outside. Mist briefly marveled over how the tiny ice Seraphii fit with such ease across the length of her hand, then looked up at the night sky.
"Up there, see it?" Mist whispered, pointing towards the dark blanket of stars, "There's color in the sky. It's rather faint because we aren't far enough north, but it's called the Aurora Borealis." Raine looked up, realizing that there was indeed a myriad of colors in the sky. As she stared in awe at the sky, a small, brief smile danced lightly across her lips, "Auro..ra.." Raine pronounced it slowly, as if carefully registering it. Mist spoke fondly, "If you want, I can pull out some books about it and read to you. There's a lot of information on such things."
Raine nodded her head, truly interested, even if her expression was like ice. Perhaps she could grow comfortable with this strange woman.

Raine's tiny hands were pressed against the window next to her equally tiny face. The greenery of Gaia was certainly a change from the snowy hills of Alaska. Her eyes had been glued there for at least half an hour now, which really surprised Mist as she had read that children were prone to having the attention span of a fly. As Mist got to know Raine, she found that all those books in child care were really a waste. This young creature was just determined to defy all laws of childhood.
The first few weeks they spent together was initially awkward, but after finding some common interests in reading and tranquility, the two found that they got along much easier. Mist found Raine to be painfully shy, but the ice Seraphii gradually opened up to her, making open requests and questions rather than stumbling over words and hiding her face every few seconds. She also found that talking about her previous guardian was an off-limits topic, which hurt Mist's feelings, but Mist never pushed on it.
"Mist!" The sudden, timid yet excited voice of Raine shook Mist out of her reverie. The child was pointing out the window with conviction, her eyes wide, "What is that?"
Raine's curiosity never ceased to surprise her. Mist laughed at the rolling green fields, slowing the vehicle down and pulling over, "Lets go see, shall we? You've seen it before, you just need to remember."
The child wrinkled her nose daintily, almost as if irritated at being told she had forgotten something. There were no complaints or arguments, however, as Mist and Raine slipped out of the car and stood looking over the fields. Raine glided over on the small cloud, staring at the large creature in awe. It was eating the grass--a delicacy that she had yet to try--and slowly looked up at her. Raine curled up behind the cloud suspiciously. The thing rose it's mighty head, giving a deep snort that blew her hair back, making the ice Seraphii give a quiet squeak! followed by the prompt formation of ice across the thing's nose.
The thing stared in dumb surprise, as if not sure what instinct to follow, then it trotted away indignantly. Raine sat upright, watching it depart to eat more grass, "Cow!" she suddenly exclaimed, watching its pink belly dance as it walked, "On the milk bottle, it's a cow!"
Mist chuckled, walking up behind Raine, "Correct. C'mon, lets go. We're almost home." Raine nodded her head, giving the cow one last good look-over before floating over Mist's shoulder.
"Where do cows come from?"
"Other cows, of course."
"I mean, how'd they get there?"
"The farmer put them there."
"But why aren't they like people?"
"Because... they're.. cows.."
"But why?"
Mist sighed. Okay, perhaps Raine didn't defy all childhood laws.

As the doorbell rang, Raine promptly hid behind the coat rack as Mist went to answer it. She blushed furiously as Mist chuckled at her, though the woman turned away to greet the person behind the door. They spoke in cheerful tones, and eventually Mist peeked over at Raine, "I'm sorry, I have to go somewhere real quick. You'll be fine on your own for about twenty minutes?"
Raine mutely nodded her head, blushing again as the guest saw her and gave a quick wave. She ducked her head, the watched as Mist gave her a reassuring smile before shutting the door behind her.
The silence was eerie. The small child stared after the door, then hugged the little kitty plushie. She liked silence and tranquility, but it was odd when no one was around. What if Mist never came back..? The child buried her head, the air around her fogging as the temperature fell. The small puff of ice drifted to the book case where the cloud came to a rest. Mist would of course come back... Right?
Raine gingerly slipped off the cloud, standing on uneasy legs. She wasn't one for walking, but Mist had said it was good for her. Ice wings gleamed in the light, and she slowly walked by the books, reading their binding to find one she liked. After she found a title that seemed appealing, Raine pulled herself back onto the cloud and zipped off to the large box with letters--A computer, Mist called it.
Mist had told Raine that she was never to take a book off the bookcase unless she had help, so as a substitute, she taught her how to use the internet. Rain pushed the dead mouse with effort until she could click on the little blue button on the monitor. Why they used a 'mouse' was beyond her. It didn't even have ears.
Raine pushed in one key at a time, peering up at the screen every-so-often to make sure it looked like the book's title. With a final click the monitor swept colors and lead her to a myriad of choices, upon which she chose the "e-book." Her eyes glided down the page, suddenly falling upon the science of temperature. Thermal energy? Kinetics? What words were these? Raine's eyes formed tears of frustration. She wanted to read now!
Quickly she calmed herself down, however, gliding over to the dictionary that Mist left out for Raine. She swept back and forth between the box and the dictionary until she felt she at least somewhat understood what was being said. Ice? What is ice? The Seraphii peered at the description of ice. A drop of temperature past a certain point... ice was the absence of heat? Raine stared down at her hand, small crystals of ice forming as her emotions slipped away. Was she the absence of heat? So if she came upon heat, she would no longer be of ice?
Raine stared blankly ahead, no londer interested in reading. Was that why Mist left her? Why her other guardian left? Because she would turn into nothing? Was she here for no purpose? Raine's shoulder shook in silent cries, tears once again threatening to spill. She was alone again.. But she liked being alone! Raine clenched the stuffed animal. She was fine being alone.
The door opened, Mist's voice calling out a goodbye to her friend. Raine looked up at her through bleary eyes, letting out a sob and clinging to Mist's sleeve.
"Raine.." Mist stared at the child in confusion, gently cupping a hand around her, "What's wrong?" The ice Seraphii simply shook her head, her face buried, "I'm sorry.. I'm here.." Mist spoke quietly, still confused but devastated to see the child in such a state. She sat down on the couch, letting Raine cling until she gradually stopped crying. The child gave the occasional sniff, and Mist went and retrieved a cup of water with a straw.
Raine drank it gratefully, hiccupping and making waves within the glass. Once she finished, she stepped off the cloud and sat on Mist's lap, though being only six inches tall made her appear even smaller and more fragile. Mist smiled at the child, whose chest began to take the deep breaths of sleep. She looked up at the ceiling, pondering and worrying. Raine was obviously troubled, but there wasn't much she could do to help until she knew what the child was thinking. It seemed that they still had a long way to go.

"Mist, this page says that things like hee-lee-um can float. Stuff really light. Is that why I can't fly?" Shining eyes of a young ice Seraphii turned upwards towards Mist, her pale skin gleaming in the dim house lights.
"Mmm?" The young woman looked up from a picture she was drawing, an eyebrow arched gently, "You're looking only at facts. You can't base everything off of what you read. If you do, then wouldn't you say that it is impossible for a living being to form out of nothing but a shard of ice?"
Raine gave a small frown, tilting her head slightly, silvery-white hair gliding over her shoulders. Mist sighed, "I mean that you are not only ice. You're alive, aren't you?"
The ice Seraphii looked over her shoulder, moving a shining wing gently. She looked to her hands and moved her fingers. They moved at will, but it didn't feel like she was thinking of it conciously. Why did they move? If her mind asked them to move, she could make it so they wouldn't. So what made them move if not the mind? Raine looked back at a wing again, gazing at it's smooth, cold surface, "Then why can I not fly?"
Mist laughed, "You haven't practiced enough! Nothing ever comes easy. Granted you're a fast learning, you still have to work to be able to learn. Even now you're still learning to read, mm?"
Raine wrinkled her nose daintily, turning away in a mix of shame and an attempt to look like she didn't care. Mist smiled and turned back to her image, her mind sliding into the trance, her hand moving with the pencil. Raine watched the human draw, the pencil gliding across the surface of the paper, creating whatever Mist desired. She looked back at her wings once more, moving them.
The cloud she sat upon glided away to the top of the bookshelf where no one could see her. She stepped off the cloud, her tiny body seemingly swallowed by the sheer size of the bookshelf's surface. Raine had tried flying before, and had managed a brief glide before crash-landing into a pillow and had lost the desire to try since then. Now, however, she felt the urge to fly. A need to.
Ice wings fluttered, oddly mobile despite being of a solid matter. She stood on the cloud, floating upwards and hovering for a while. With a deep breath, and a strange lack of hesitation, Raine slipped off the edge of the cloud, her wings outstretched. For a second it was an instinct, an unconcious wonderment of movement. She was lighter than air, wings directing, instinct guiding. Raine smiled, looking back at her wings. It was strange, seeing as ice had no properties that might allow her to defy gravi--Raine squeaked, hitting the top of the bookshelf as a mix of ice and snow bursted under her in reflex. She took a deep breath, standing up slowly. Raine looked down at Mist, feeling mortally embarassed. She wanted to ask for Mist's help, but suddenly felt shy. Raine stepped back, keeping her failure to herself. She shook her head, hugging herself in defense. She would try again.
Raine stood back on the cloud, let it glide up. She did this before. It was natural for her to fly. It was something they all did. She had met other Seraphii before, when she was with her first guardian, so she knew others could fly. It felt like a lifetime ago... it was hard to remember.
She leapt off again, this time beating her wings a few times, sensing the air flow around her as she beat against it. Again she fell. Once more she stood. The next hour was dedicated to this process of rising and falling. At first she was scared, shy, embarassed. But now she was determined.
Mist had watched the ice Seraphii briefly, each time the cloud rose it was easier to see her, then she glided down out of view. She smiled, watching the strange expression that had become embedded in the ice Seraphii's gentle features. Mist turned away, going about her own business and letting the strange being explore for herself. Raine was lacking the strength needed for extended flights, but it appeared that she was beginning to understand the concept. Mist smiled, knowing that Raine would learn over time.

"Mist? Why are kids afraid of the birds and the bees?" Raine's clear voice rang out from the couch, and Mist peered down at her with a rather quizzical expression.
"What are you reading?" Mist asked slowly, looking down at the book that was of normal size to her eyes, but ten times as large as the little ice creature.
The cloud drifted to the side, and Raine pointed down, "These are poems. I don't understand them at all." A hint of frustration could be heard in her voice, "And this one started talking about kids learning about birds and bees. I don't get it. Is it because they both have wings?"
Mist coughed, a hand covering her mouth, "A-hem. Uh.. well, I think you aren't ready for poetry yet. There are lots of good poems, but you need to learn about symbolism and structure first before you will be able to analyze them."
"Symbolism?" Raine blinked ignorantly.
"Symbolism.. um.. where an author may use one thing to represent something else. You may want to look it up to get a better definition." Mist shrugged, taking the opportunity to casually sweep the book again, "I can start you out with little children's rhymes. They may be for young ones, but they are actually forms of poetry.. I guess. Sometime later you can get into the meters, symbolism, learning about the iambic pentameter, diameter, the Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnets..." Mist paused as she realized Raine was giving her a rather lost look. She shook her head, "Nevermind that. Here"
Mist handed Raine a small book, one that was meant to look cute in the eyes of human children, but to Raine it was almost of a managable size. "Twinkle Little Star? The Itsy Bitsy Spider? A mouse runs up a clock..." Raine looked over at Mist, "These use small words! I wanted to learn!" Her voice was indignant, almost like one of authority chastizing one of a lower rank.
An eyebrow rose slowly, and Mist frowned, "You did not understand poetry because you do not understand the basics. Just because you have learned a few words does not make you a master of language." Raine's cheeks flushed and she looked away. She had not been chastized before. Mist lightly patted Raine on the head, then moved on to the kitchen to make tea. Raine stared down at the pages, her eyes blurring at first in anger, then in shame. Mist was right... she had become... arrogant? Raine sniffed quietly, rubbing her eyes and looking down at the little booklet.
Twinkle twinkle little star, it began, how I wonder... Raine's eyes glazed over the words, picturing a little star in the sky. How was this poetry? Star... are... high... sky... the end words sounded the same. The words had a little tune to them, even though there was no music to it. Why was this so? She repeated the lines again, this time moving her lips with it, slowly whispering. It was the letters that made the tune!
"Mist!" Raine cried, watching Mist come into the room, "It's the letters, isn't it? The 'k' and the 't' and that sort of stuff, right?"
Mist smiled, "The letters in our language have different enunciations to them." Raine tilted her head in curiosity, and Mist continued, "Stresses. Each word has certain points of stress. Here, look at this book." Mist pulled out a thick book, "This is Perinne's book. You may not understand it at first, but perhaps you can work through some of the basics."
Raine nodded her head, looking at the massive book. It looked like it would take forever to read, but she could at least skim it, "Mist..." She looked down at her hands in her lap, blushing, "I'm sorry." Her voice came out as a whisper, barely audible.
"Don't worry about it. It happens to the best of us." Mist smiled, moving back to the kitchen. She needed to take Raine out. Being alone with only Mist as a companion wasn't helping Raine all that much. Mist sighed. She needed to meet with other Seraphii.

The slamming of a door announced Mist's return home, and Raine zipped upon her cloud to the greeting, "Welcome back." The small ice Seraphii said with a smile.
Mist's face was beaming with delight as she held up a box, her eyes glittering with the secret, "I have something new to show you." At first she had been a bit worried about the idea, but after a while, Mist had decided to give it a try.
Raine blinked curiously, slowly floating over to the box with holes as Mist set it on the floor. Her guardian's hands swiftly opened the top, and as she did so a strange cry came from within, "Meewww!"
The pale ice Seraphii gave a small gasp, peering over the flaps, "It's.. a cat!" She had always had a fascination for cats, keeping a stuffed animal shaped like a cat with her at all times.
Mist nodded her head, "Yup. And she's your responsibility, if you'll accept him."
Raine slapped her two hands over her mouth as if to stop herself from squealing. She nodded her head vigerously, blushing as she did so. Mist smiled, "I'll teach you how to take care of him then, but I'll be there to help you as a lot of the stuff he needs will be a bit hard for you to handle yet."
Sharp purple eyes watched Mist as food and bowls were brought in. Raine found herself at first perplexed over the concept of 'kitty litter', then a bit embarrassed when realization dawned on her. She helped in scooping the food into the bowl, using a spoon to push out the pebbles as Mist held the bag. After the water and everything was set up, Mist held the small cat and let Raine pet it, watching carefully to make sure the cat wouldn't try to eat the sentient being. When she determined that the two would be safe together, Mist gave a quick wave and disappeared into her work room.
Left alone with the kitten, Raine found herself at a loss of what to do, "Um.. hello." The cat purred, nuzzling it's head up to Raine, who scratched the top of the kitty's head, "We should name you something, huh? Mist said she'd leave that to me, but I don't know what you like." The cat slowly stopped purring, suddenly bounding off to chase a loose thread on the table cloth, "W-Wait!" Raine squeaked, floating over, "That's not safe! The tablecloth could be pulled off!"
The kitten, however, paid no heed to the warning, and persisted in clawing the evasive little strand. A claw caught onto the cloth, shifting it slightly towards the cat. Raine took hold of the paw, trying to seperate the claw from the cloth, "Sit-- Down-- Stay!"
The ball of energy did retract it's claw, however he merely bounded off in another direction, promptly ignoring Raine, "Aaahh, wait--"
Raine caught up to the kitten, floating in front and making it stop to curiously paw at her cloud, "I.. I don't mean to be rude.. but you need to listen or else you'll get into trouble." The cat turned to leave, but Raine again shifted to float in front of his eyes, "S-sorry, but.. you need to be careful. I'll show you around."
"Mreow?" Raine smiled, turning away to show him where she slept, "This way is where--ah! Wait!" She looked over her shoulder, watching as the cat pranced away. How in the world was one to take care of a cat?! She huffed in frustration, but quickly cooled her temper. This cat was obviously too young to listen to reason, so she needed to take different measures. Raine glided over to the shoe rack, pulling out one of the shoe laces on Mist's shoe. Quickly the ice Seraphii swept through the air, finding the cat extending it's claws in the couch. She threw the edge of the shoe string over her cloud, letting it dangle.
The movement caught in the cat's eyes, drawing him away in a great pounce. Raine barely pulled back in time, breathing deeply to shake herself out of the shock of his speed. The cloud glided across the way with the kitten in tow. Around the table twice, over the couch, under a chair, around the table again. Gradually the kitten started to slow down, and eventually he stopped altogether, opting to sit on the couch rather than running across it. He laid down, the tip of his tail twitching though there was no further evidence of his giving chase.
Raine dropped the shoe lace over the shoe, returning to the young kitten who's eyes were half closed. At least this would keep him quiet until Mist would be able to come and teach him what was okay and not okay. She slipped off her cloud, leaning against the cat's furry neck, "How about Damashi for a name? It sounds kinda fun." The ice Seraphii said with a tiny smile, yawning and leaning further into the fur. She would rest just for a little bit, then she would go back to her post to watch over Damashi. Her dark lashes slowly fluttered shut, and the Seraphii and the kitten lay there in peaceful sleep.
