Part one: Planning

Although it often doesn't take much to make a good role playing character, planning is important so that you can make the best character possible for the role play you are joining. When you've read over what the role play entales, making a character involves using what you've read and then combining it with your own ideas. There are many different ways you can plan out a character, commonly people base characters off various anime characters, while that makes it easy, it does tend to make very plain and uninteresting characters. Planning out your own character from scratch, is probably the most fun and best thing you could do but it takes a fair bit of time to do this, with some of the tips and tricks that I know, I will hopefully make this task much easier for you.

Regardless of the role play, everyone has their own unique playing style, what type of character they are best at playing. More often role play characters reflect who we are, or who we might want to be depending on the case because many role plays involve things, which are nearly impossible for them to happen in real life. The first trick is first finding out what your best at playing, and then instead trying to do something different. Now that might sound strange, but if you constantly play the 'same' kind of character, it gets old, quickly. I have friends whom this has happened to and a character, which was one probably their best creation ended up dead because it was overused and they got tired of it.
