Obviously, this is something of a new thing. I've certainly never put one of these together before and I'd love to hear what you think about it. Suggestions are always appreciated and so are critiques (as long as they stay productive).

I think that apart from the tournament, there should be some sort of subforum for our characters to hold their own storylines through short stories. It's not a role-play, and we can't use other characters, but the NPCs and such that accompany our characters can better characterize the fighters and make them more interesting to watch and play. Basically, the short stories we submit in our prompts can be added on to.

When our first tournament is done, if a character has won the wishing stone, we will need a new prize, and the winner of the wishing stone would be able to play out how it affected the character. Everyone could explain what will make their character come back for the new prize.

It can weave up other subplots besides the prize won in the tournament.

It would be completely optional, of course, but I think it would help raise awareness and interest in your character and increase your chances of winning.

---------

Also, are the types of tournaments selected by a die roll you will complete?

How do we handle a character dying?

Do you really think we'll get enough players for even a small tournament and still have enough outside voters who will honestly vote for their favorites instead of themselves?

Do you have any sites that could give us ideas for interesting characters? I don't have much background in non-human RPs. I know the characters can be human, but that'd be sort of boring in comparison to the rest of the characters we'll be up against.

This is very good idea. When it comes to the Wishing Stone, however, I assume that the final round of the tournament will include the character's use of the stone. Each of the two finalists will be writing the ends to their stories, after all. And don't worry about the new prize so much. People will explain what made them come back (if they choose to use the same character) in their applications for the second tournament. Right now, I just want to get the first one off the ground.

Also, are the types of tournaments selected by a die roll you will complete?

Yes. You'll get a feel for that once the tournament gets started.

How do we handle a character dying?

Same way you handle anything else happening to your character: turn it into development. The nice thing about writing is that nothing is absolute. Does your character come back from the dead or is he/she reincarnated in another form? Are they a zombie?

Of course, you could also just make an entirely new character bent on avenging the first. It's all up to you.

I expect people to vote for themselves in their own fights. It would be naive to think otherwise. Remember, though, that there will be more than one fight in a round. A small tournament will have eight fights in round one. You can only vote for yourself in one of those. Each fight is a separate poll with a separate winner. Plus, we already have one person who has joined as a dedicated voter. She can't vote for herself ever.

There are many tournament like this on Deviant Art. I got the idea from there, in fact. Here are the three I'm following:
The Colosseum (This was my real source of inspiration. You'll see many similarities)
Escape From Nevara (Off to a rough start, but it had a massive amount of people audition.)
Ebon Spire (Still in the audition phase. This one will be a beast.)

Ah... I thought we were keeping the same characters. My bad. So, we can have a short story sort of thing going on outside of this tournament, but involved in it?

Also, can another person kill our characters in their fight? Because then it'd be very difficult to continue on with the short story thing...

I kinda answered that question... Yes, they could. But they would have to win the fight for it to become "Canon."

I had an idea for another fighting tournament. What about a maze? In said maze you'd be up against dead ends, terrifying monsters and other opponents. Work your way through it to advance to the next arena. Just a thought.

The underground "Earth" matches are something like that. To advance you need to find and defeat your opponent.

Taking a leaf from the Iron Chef school of thought here. What if we had a fight which centered around using a specific ingredient or weapon or what have you to eliminate your opponent in the most delicious way? In many tournaments there were rounds based on specific weapons or strategies. Also, I'm not entirely kidding about the Iron Chef thing, I want to see what a giant, violence-prone, mechasuited, steroid-dependent space-marine can do with swordfish. Also, Saint, I have a book you need to read. I'm coming home this weekend sometime, I think, remind me to give it to you. It was given me by one Dan Sharkovitz. It is called The War Between the Pitiful Teachers and the Splendid Kids, and it might be the best thing ever written.
I had forgotten about it before I got started thinking about gladiatorial combat (this fact, coupled with the book's title, should lead you to make your own assumptions about how awesome this thing is).

That title reminds me so much of a short story I once read by a friend of mine...

Hey after the tournament, let's say a guy wins and does his ending. There's going to be another tournament right? So it's been 2 years more or less and a new tournament is starting the NPC and PC who are returning or stay there should have there costumes change, it can range from one thing to lots of things like a shirt for the ring master or a whole new outfit for Big Tut, ect. Would that be a good idea, for each character too? Considering they wouldn't have the same used equipment on the tournament that was held the year before.

Oh yeah, when are we starting the tournament?

Why is everyone so worried about what happens after the tournament? Trust me, I've got ideas coming out the wazoo for that. The tournament can't start until we've got enough people. There's only you and me right now and that certainly isn't enough.

I'm working on a character as we speak I just can't find a reason as to why he'd need the stone. I had a question. Besides moving to the next round do contestants win anything for simply defeating there opponent? (i.e. money, food, coupons.)

Depending on the reason the character has joined the arena, victory may just mean they live to see another day. It's really up to you as the writer.

Yeah, hopefully more people will register their character but would a team count as 1 character or as 2 characters?

Also I made two characters for the toournament so it would make us have 3 characters particpating unless the teams are 1 in total.

It's not about number of characters, it's about number of competitors. We will need sixteen individual writers to run this.
