I make small figurines after an inspiring tutorial I found on dA, they're usually 1.5-2 inches tall and I'm having issues with arms/legs tentacles! D:

The tutorial says to get a sort of mini-cone-shaped tool (like a sharpened pencil shape but without the splinters) and use that in a rolling + up or down motion to smooth the clay and meld pieces together. That's good.

But when I do (I don't know if I explained it well enough) it either turns out rough, or it takes a chunk out of whatever arm/leg/piece I was attaching so it's no longer cute.

I'm wondering how to go about doing it without ruining the shape of the clay.

For an example, how did she smooth on the tentacles of this seagod in such small proximity without ruining either the pieces of tentacle or his mouth-area?

My favorite method of smoothing is a set of small, thin, METAL double pointed needles. Just rolling it carefully back and forth softly over a trouble spot can do a lot to even things out.

I hear that rubbing alcohol can help smooth the clay out, but I haven't actually tested that yet.

Also, I'd be interested to see that dA tutorial if you've still got the link. :3

I usually just use a tooth pick and smooth the arm onto the body.

I guess the trick is to be gentle and if you mess up just kinda... Reshape that part. sweatdrop
