Background: Over the past few weeks, my son has been treated for respiratory problems. We've have a nebulizer for breathing treatments, tried steroids, switched formula, had a chest x-ray, and even tried treating his acid reflux to see if that fixes the problem. Our last doctor visit, he sounded really good, so the doctor pushed his next appointment off a week and a half (3/16/09) to make sure that his improvement wasn't just related to the steroids.

Yesterday was six-month-old Logan's first day in Sunday School and all was going fine. He didn't seem to notice I wasn't there. Half way through class, however, his teacher popped into my daughter's class where I was and told me Logan was pulling really hard and coughing a lot. His teacher tried standing him in front of the open freezer to open his airways. Still struggling, we called the medical team and gave him oxygen which helped get us home. He screamed the entire way home because the sun was in his face and for the first time, I was grateful he wasn't asleep.

I guess what I want to know is... besides the obvious advice of talking to his doctor, have any of your children gone through breathing problems and what, besides medical treatments, did you do to help ease his struggle for breath?

With Dedrick one of the first things I do is get him to calm down. I get him something warm to drink if we're not at home. His asthma acts up when he gets over excited. Though when he has a cold I end up having to use his nebulizer twice a day or he coughs his head off practically.

I don't know if the cold air was the greatest idea though. I know with me cold air just aggravates the situation.

I can imagine how scary that would be, Kitty.

We feared Aden would have breathing problems too. A few months ago, he was crying a lot (he'd hurt himself somehow), and he dropped to the floor and was twitching and couldn't breathe. It was very scary.

We made an appointment ASAP to see if he had asthma or something. The doctor told us it's hard to test for asthma in babies and small children because they squirm so much. Luckily it didn't happen again until a couple weeks ago, when nearly the same situation took place.

We just pick him up, pat him on the back to calm him down and make him cough and breathe properly. Then we usually give him a bottle of water or something to calm him down. It's usually when he's getting tired that something like this happens.

I'm sure your son probably has it worse than Aden ever has, but that's the best advice I can offer. I'm glad to hear your son is okay.

@Princess Pandamonium - The teacher that did this had asthma all her life and its one way she and her mother used to open her airways when she was little. But I agree that this wouldn't work on everyone.

He's been doing better, but every morning, he's doing just as bad as he was Sunday. After a breathing treatment and breakfast he calms down and breathes normally. As long as he stays on this pattern and doesn't get worse... I will wait till his next doctor's appointment. If it gets worse, I'll take him in early.

Aw poor guy, I'm sorry to hear he's going through this and you too.

For the screaming with the sun being in his eyes, you did mention steroids. I know for a lot of people it can make them pretty cranky or downright mean at times. I know some like Albuterol can get them really wound up too.

How does he do for the nebulizer treatments? Liam had some issues when he was a baby (and Logan had some older, but they outgrew them thankfully) and HATED it. The best attachment for the breather was this paci attachment, made the screaming and fighting go away.

I wish I really had some experience or advice, but I hope he feels better soon.

Ah okay. I just thought that was a bit odd.

I hope he's feeling okay now.

Amazingly, he doesn't seem to mind his breathing treatments. I have the paci attachment, but as the n****e on it is not a size/shape he likes, he doesn't hang onto it long. He actually lets me put the mask on him. My only issue is keeping him from yanking the tube off when he's playing with it.

We went back to the doctor on Monday and all his steps forward were lost. He's wheezing just as bad as before the steroids, so we're sure that's what helped. The doctor prescribed another steroid for him, along with 2 antihistamines... and he's still taking medicine for acid reflux... She also put him on Neocate. Unfortunately, it's gonna be a month before I can interview to get on WIC and the formula is $139/case! (that's 4 small canisters - about 2 days feedings in each). And I thought Similac was expensive... O.o;;

We also decided to do an allergy test. Poor thing had to be stuck twice. Once in the peds. office, and then at the hospital. Thankfully, the nurses at the hospital were very good and only had to stick him once. I don't wanna think how many times it would have taken the peds nurses.

We're back to the doctor on Friday...

Will the ped not give you some free samples to tide you over at least a little bit on the formula?

I'm really hoping for your little man and finding something that helps him. heart

She gave us all she had... one container. Needless to say it didn't last long.

We went back to the doctor last Friday. Logan's allergy test came back negative across the board and the doctor decided to take him off his medications after the weekend to see how he was doing. He's only been taking one of his antihistamines. And yesterday we went for another recheck. The doctor said she's never seen him look and sound so healthy! He's doing great! Time will tell if it is yet again, just the medicines. But for a week now, he hasn't needed a breathing treatment and even his skin looks better! We are so happy! Now we just have to wait and see praying he doesn't start to go downhill again.

Well, Logan's problems started up again while we were at my in-laws house two weeks ago. Of course we didn't have his nebulizer with us. We took him to the doctor Monday morning and he was put on an oral and inhaled steroid, along with an antibiotic for another ear infection. One week of the medicines and all seemed good. He's breathing fine again. As always, the steroids seem to do the trick.

He will be on the inhaled steroid for the next six months. The doctor hopes that it will give his lungs a chance to heal and strengthen. Fingers crossed.

I'm crossing fingers for you.

It sucks when you're children are sick and you don't know what to do for them.
