History: Yue Xuan was born in 1936, the period of time in which Singapore was established as a Crown Colony under the British Rule, to Li Zheng Yi and Ye Xuan Li. She had an older brother, 2 years older than her, named Yue Jing. Her younger days were rather peaceful; Zheng Yi became a member of the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements.
It was in 1942 when everything changed. News that the Japanese had conquered Malaysia had spread to Singapore, and Yue Xuan’s household grew restless, anxious, and as she was young at the time, she did not understand why. Zheng Yi’s younger brother returned from doing business overseas, and the children were glad as he constantly played with them, and was a distraction to the troubling news. When Zheng Yi, however, announced that he would join the forces in holding back the Japanese, he was greeted by tearful objections of his wife. The two children began to cry as their parents quarrelled over the matter and Zheng Yi, seeing this, lowered his voice and brought them to their rooms, telling them to sleep.
Yue Xuan did not sleep; she was worried.
Silently, she crept to the door and listened to her parents’ conversation.
“你会死的.” You will die. Were the first words she heard and Yue Xuan froze.
“我一定要去保护我们的国家.” I have to go and protect our country. Her father said firmly.
The rest of the conversation dropped to a low murmur and Yue Xuan crept back to her bed, her heart thudding in her chest as she wondered what exactly was going on. She awoke the next morning to see her mother with red-rimmed eyes, her father nowhere to be found. He had gone.
Silently, her mother enveloped both her children in her arms, and Yue Xuan told herself that she hated him, for making her mother upset, for leaving them alone.
It was only when the bad news came that she regretted thinking so.
Her father had gone missing, thought to be one of the many deceased soldiers.
And Singapore was being invaded by the Japanese. Bombs were starting to drop on the streets and everyone was in a panic, fleeing in desperation to save their lives.
Zheng Yu then told his sister-in-law that he had booked them places on a ship so they could flee to Britain and be safe. Xuan Li insisted to stay; it was not yet confirmed that Zheng Yi was dead, and she was confident that he would come back alive. He tried to persuade her, to no avail, and as another explosion was heard, Xuan Li pushed her two children to Zheng Yu, telling him to take them along, while she would remain.
In Britain, Yue Xuan and her brother received an English education, and often pined for their homeland, wishing that both their parents were well. However, no news had been received from their mother, and they all resigned themselves to the worst. Even if her father had survived, there was a high chance that the two would have been killed in the Sook Ching massacre. Yue Xuan and her brother grew up under the watchful eyes of their uncle, and later his wife. The girl studied hard, aspiring to be a lawyer. Even as she grew up in Britain, she kept a sharp eye on the news about the happenings in Singapore.
After the World War II ended, the two siblings returned to Singapore with their uncle in 1959 after the PAP was elected as the Government of Singapore. Now 23, the headstrong young woman was on a mission to find the whereabouts of her parents, stubbornly determined that they had survived the war.
It was then time broke.
