It'd been a few months since she'd last heard any new news about Lab 305. In fact as far as Ebony Shade was concerned, they'd never even collected all the funds they needed to rebuild the place. So you could imagine her surprise to find a brand new building shining like a gem in the area that was once nothing more than a pile of blackened rubble. Though she'd never actually seen what the lab's previous incarnation had been, the violet haired woman couldn't suppress a high whistle that indicted her being impressed. It certainly was big and most likely filled with lots of brand new equipment. Lots of expensive equipment.

But alas Ebony couldn't allow such thoughts to linger since she'd sworn off this place in particular due to certain people she'd befriended that were part of it. A little sigh escaped her lips as she walked through the front doors and into the main lobby. She couldn't help feeling it was somehow a waste. Though upon entering she was quickly reminded of why she'd come down there today. The message on her machine was vague, yet highly intriguing. Apparently they had something for her. What that was, she could only imagine. Maybe she'd accidentally left something at the last event? Ebony doubted that, but...you never know. She was still only human after all.

"Ello?" called out the British woman as she approached what she assumed was the front desk.

"You think it'll start raining soon?"

As she had been when she was waiting for her guardian to arrive on the day of her birth, Dayo was floating at one of the Lab's windows, hands splayed on the glass. However, a lot had changed since that day-- she knew how windows worked now, and that you couldn't go through them when they were closed-- and instead of sleepily tapping at it to try and get it to divulge its mysterious secrets, she was gazing out of it, up at the clouds above. The glow of her rune matched fairly well with the color of the sky, and it flickered a bit as she turned towards her guardian, waiting for an answer to her question.

"Mnh," the Lab's new maintenance girl responded. Her voice was all but drowned out by the rumbling of a nearby air compressor.

The rebuilt facility certainly did have its fair share of expensive equipment... and a single person on staff to make sure the values on everything didn't suddenly start degrading. And since it didn't seem as though Dr. Kyou or Alex had ever done much more than make sure all the lights were blinking right since the day they had been plugged in, Mouse had a lot of work to do. And before she could get to the actual work, she had to address the fact that all of the machines in this place had accumulated over half a year's worth of dust.

Hence the aforementioned air compressor. It hissed into the motherboard of one of many devices yet to come, the noise enough to block out whatever Dayo was saying next.

"I bet it'll start storming... that'll be so awesome!"

The eagle girl detached herself from the window and drifted across the room, her ribbon pulled a bit at one point by a cover plate that had been placed on the floor. Her target was the main door to the Lab-- if it was going to start raining, there was no way she was going to stay inside! Sure, the sky wasn't really all that dark and there wasn't so much as a warning crackle of thunder in the distance, but she wasn't about to give up hope on seeing some lightning cleave across the clouds.

Except... someone had come inside.

Ello?

Dayo giggled. What kind of a name was that?

She let herself veer off course, and instead approached the stranger approaching the front desk. "Hey, are you, like... looking for someone?" Despite a guardian-instilled desire to be polite her voice wavered with the threat of laughter, her mirth coming off her form in fizzy little waves.

She turned to the voice addressing her then and for whatever reason found herself breaking out into a huge smile at the mere presence of the female Raevan. Despite the bleak sky outside, it felt like sunshine inside and Ebony couldn't help the slip of a small giggle although there was obviously nothing funny going on. Noting this, she gave a slightly vexed expression before shaking her head, yet the smile remained plastered to her face.

"Uh, yes, I am. I mean, well, I'm not sure who I'm suppose to see exactly, but I was told to come by today because you have something for me?" As much as Ebony was trying to be coherent and professional, it was like a magnet kept pulling her back to giddy and fidget like, the latter noticed by the uncharacteristic shuffling of her feet now. Without really meaning too, Ebony also managed to blurt out, "Wow, you have really pretty hair." Again she seemed confused by her own actions. Seriously, what was wrong with her?

"I do?"

Dayo blinked in surprise, bringing up a small claw to clasp her chin with. She briefly scanned her form to find nothing stashed on it besides the odd tuft of hair caught in a spike or a belt clasp. And both of her hands were most definitely empty... how strange. Maybe she forgot to bring it? There wasn't anything besides a few of her guardian's tools on the floor...

...Her guardian! She would know! Smiling, she turned around and let the breeze of that thought carry her into the hallway, leaving the purple-haired woman who talked sort of differently at the front desk without so much as a word. Mouse was kneeling on the floor hunched over a machine, blasting at its interior with that hissing hose machine of hers. The eagle girl lifted a claw and tapped her on the shoulder.

Mouse flinched in surprise from the contact, and was quick to turn around to see Dayo floating above her. "Oh, did you forget where the door is again? If you go out that wa--"

"Was I supposed to bring someone a present today?"

The mechanic turned around to face her charge more fully. "Umm... no?" she answered, straightening up and trying in vain to brush some dust out of her hair. "What's making you ask that?"

While pulling idly at one of the locks of hair framing her face, Dayo responded, "Well, like... someone came in and they... uh... they said I had something for them..."

"...Oh."

The pickup today.

Crap.

A few minutes later, someone had dashed into the reception room - a shorter woman who had enough dust worked into her form to make her look part ghost. "Oh man, I am so sorry!" Her grimy hands searched the drawers of the reception desk -- she really had no idea where to look -- for the proper files on the extra task she had been assigned for today. "This might take a while. I was only supposed to do maintenance here, but-- hey, can you tell me your name so I know what the hell I'm looking for?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:13 pm

Gray orbs blinked back in response, leaning to the side to watch as the eagle girl went floating away without a word, yet taking that odd pent up energy with her as well. An amused expression slipped onto her lips as she waited for either the Raevan to return or for someone else to come and help her. Lightly tapping a slender digit to her chin, "I wonder if my oddness just now was because of her?"

The Raevans were beginning to look more and more interesting with each new addition to the project. Ebony could feel the beginnings of obsession and longing in her begin to stir. Sometimes she just couldn't help coveting for things she really shouldn't. Luckily for her someone tore her away from such sins like a tornado yanked trees from the ground in their fury.

"That's all right. I don't mind, not like I have to be anywhere anytime soon." Oh right she'd forgotten to mention her name to the Raevan earlier due to the weirdness. Smiling, "Oh right! I'm Ebony Shade. May I ask your name as well?"

"Alright, good, we're on the same page, then..." the mechanic replied briskly, then went on to mumble to herself as she flipped her fingers through the files. "...Shade, Ebony Shade... oh... there's Star... and Sweet, must have gone too far, damn..." Really, she shouldn't have been doing this, seeing how pickups and dropoffs hadn't been a part of the job description she had signed up for! It was just supposed to be a maintenance job, what with giving the equipment routine checkups and fixing the air conditioner when it went on the fritz. Unfortunately, with the staff as small as it was, Ms. Shade would have walked in to an empty building if she hadn't shown up.

Oh well.

"Ah--- right. I'm Mouse, and... here's you!" she grinned, pulling the correct folder out of the drawer with a flourish that blew a few puffs of dust onto the desk. She flipped open the file (was she even allowed to look at these?) and briefly scanned its contents before breaking into an amused expression. "Oh, I gotcha... I'll be right back, gotta dig something out of Dr. Kyou's office." And with that she pivoted around on one foot and headed slowly out of the room, whistling tunelessly and twirling a keyring with her finger.

The eagle girl chuckled from where she was floating in the room. "Ohhhhh, I get it!" Ebony must have come here to pick up a gift from him... and he hadn't been here! "But, like... his name's Kyou, not Ello." She couldn't help but break into another fit of giggles as she said that.

"It's okay, though. My guardian'll get your present to you!"

While Mouse rummaged around for a file, Ebony remained silent, yet that damnable smile could be felt drawing back up on her face as that bubbly feeling came crawling back. Though unlike before, the purple haired woman was a bit more prepared and managed to suppress the urge to giggle. Although it was kinda hard to resist with the source of it so close.

She coughed a little, waving her hand slight to disperse the dust the mechanic blew into the air with the victory of finding the elusive file. A slender brow rose curiously, "No problem. Take your time." Grey pools stared a hole into the file, wondering what things the lab had collected about her precisely. Surely they didn't know anything about her "nightly" occupation? She bit her bottom lip, torn between right and wrong once again.

Luckily, she was snatched from the temptation to rip the folder open and instead turned to the tawny haired Frei. "Yes, well I have plenty of faith in her then. And I know what the doctor's name is, 'ello' is just how I say 'hi' or..." In order to say the word correctly, Ebony had to slow down for proper annunciation. "...'hello.' Yet, speaking of names, what's yours?"

Hello?

The purple ponytail lady had said hello...

As the gears in Dayo's head turned to process this new information, she peered at the space behind the desk before pivoting her eagle eyes around the room. Why did she say hello when there had been nobody there? Even if you say it in a weird way there still needs to be someone around to say hi to! Tilting her head a bit in confusion, she giggled again, deciding that this woman's strangeness was making her fun.

"I'm Dayo... well, like... my name's really Ekundayo, but that's, uhh... super long... so, I'm just Dayo!" Her wings fluttered, seeming to emphasize her nickname.

If it weren't for those wings and the color of her eyes, the fact that she had the soul of an eagle would probably have been very hard to believe.

A surprised-sounding grunt and a clatter echoed from down the hallway, followed by a dragged-out "Owwww!"

Mouse frowned and rubbed her injured scalp for a moment, sighing in relief when she felt no trace of blood or broken skin beneath the faded soil-and-grass of her hair. What the hell had just fallen on her... and where the hell were those materials?! As much as she respected Dr. Kyou, his method of organization didn't make any sense to the mechanic, though that was probably partially because he dealt in materials and realms of knowledge she didn't even know existed until she got roped into the Lab.

Her eyes rolled aimlessly around the room, searching for a sign of what she was looking for, until landing on top of her employer's desk.

Oh... there they were.

Ebony could practically see the gears turning in the young Frei's mind at her explanation, of which she still didn't seem to get completely. For something that looked so grownup (and despite not possessing a lower half), the Raevans certainly were just like children once created. While amusing in its own sweet and cute way, the Brit couldn't imagine how hard it was to raise one. Yet...what Ebony wouldn't give to have a chance at having a Raevan of her own, if primarily for the bragging rights of being part of an exclusive circle and to posses something so rare. A slight sigh escaped her before she ushered away her greedy and vain nature. She couldn't allow temptation to get the best of her.

Lips twitching upwards for the umpteenth time that day all due to that giggling, feathery winged girl, "Ekundayo..." Ebony tested it out, yet shook her head as she corrected herself. The Raevan wanted to be called by her nickname, something Ebony wasn't prone to doing, but she would respect her wishes. "Dayo...it's different, but nice. Pleasure to meet you."

It was then that a loud crash graced her ears, accompanied by an equally loud and drawn out shout. The lilac haired female's brow rose in question. "What was that?" Hopefully Mouse hadn't gotten into some sort of trouble while getting whatever it was that was meant for her.

"Nice to meet you too," Dayo responded on the heels of Ebony's formality. The standard meet-and-greets that were used when encountering new people were something that had been essentially drilled into the Frei's head early on by her guardian, who had figured that knowing those doors and keys to relationships would encourage her to talk more. And as flighty as her speech tended to be, it sure had helped a lot.

Her eyes glanced somewhat lazily in the direction of the noise, and she shrugged with an indifferent smile. "Something probably fell on her."

The mechanic came out a few seconds later, looking uninjured but with a briefcase and what looked like some bits of paperwork in tow. Lifting it onto the desk with a casual slam - she didn't seem too concerned that the contents would be damaged, whether out of carelessness or experience. "Okay, so..." she glanced at the form, "Just toss your signature and the date on there..." Her hand flew across the desk to grab a pen and drop it on the form as she spoke.

"The glass used to make the containers are both pretty hard to break, but you should still be careful-- especially if you're gonna be going after something dangerous." She flashed a mischievous grin at that.

That blissful happy spell that Ebony was slowly falling back under as she smiled joyfully at the eagle Raevan was harshly broken with the slamming of a certain brief case. Though it wasn't exactly a true slamming, it was enough of a surprise to make the woman jump.

Grey eyes blinked at the case baffled. That definitely wasn't something she'd accidentally leave somewhere. As Mouse rattled on and furnished a form and a pen, Ebony turned to look at her confused. "Wait, glass? Something dangerous? What are you talking about? What is this?"

Green eyes blinked back at the greys once the mind behind them had processed Ebony's question. She... didn't know? Mouse smirked again. It seemed as if Dr. Kyou had a particular fondness for surprising whatever candidates he picked when it came to Raevan study. It was something she had experienced as well... and more than once, if one counted the similar feelings that had been the theme in the chimera experiment that had gotten her formally into the Lab in the first place.

"Why don't you take a look and see what it is?" the maintenance girl suggested, and promptly flipped the latches of the briefcase open with one of her skilled hands. As she waited for Ebony to finish the job she glanced at the paperwork again, saying, "It says here you've been assigned... ah, the Lingering Smoke, which refuses to dissipate under any conditions whatsoever. Neat stuff."

And the boring talk had started... Quickly losing interest in the new person, Dayo started to drift away from the desk and back towards the front door to gaze outside. Hadn't someone said that it was going to rain...?
PostPosted: Mon Apr 06, 2009 8:10 pm

Still confused, Ebony watched as the green haired woman unhooked the latches and showed her its contents. What she saw was an empty round bottle nestled snug next to a small vial of swirling black masses. Lingering Smoke was what Mouse had called it, but more importantly it was one of those rare and valuable Fel Essences she'd heard so much about. And it was right in front of her, mere inches away.

The British woman reached out a tentative hand and gently touched her finger to the vial. It was real, she wasn't dreaming. Ebony let out a shaky breath then that she hadn't been aware she'd been holding in. "The doctor wants me to be a guardian? Me? Really?"

Mouse chuckled a bit under her breath as she watched Ebony's realization-- and subsequently, her reaction-- unfold. "Yup," she responded, twirling the pen between her restless fingers, leaning casually on the desk in a way that allowed her a good view at the contents of the briefcase. The black smoke lazily swirling in the vial was one of those things she would probably have been able to stare at for hours. It was certainly a great deal more tame than some others she'd seen or heard of... including her own.

"And it's really not worth it to question his methods... the guy seems to find everyone in a different way and for different reasons, and hell if I know why." The mechanic gave a shrug, ran a hand through her hair and held the pen back out with the other. "In any case, you still gotta sign the form, but go ahead and take a few minutes if you're still in shock."
