Got this depressing little tale from a book of celtic myths I'm adapting into a short cartoon as well as a Hellboy fanfic.
A man walks down a dirt road, leaving the pub in a daze to his home, which is several miles away. On the road he comes across a strange little man. He thinks nothing of this man. After all, he's drunk and not thinking. The little man looks up to him and asks with the utmost sincerity "If I do only good things, may I go to heaven?"
Shrugging off the creature, the man tells him "I'll ask the priest, and I will tell you Sunday night."
It wasn't until the next morning that he realized he had encountered a fairy. Knowing he made a promise, he asked the priest, and returned the next Sunday.
He told the fairy "He said no, you cannot make it into heaven simply by doing good."
The creature looks up to him and says "What if I pray every day and every night? Then can I make it into heaven?"
The man, with nothing but concern and compassion, agrees to meet next Sunday with the answer. The answer from the priest is not one that either of them want.
He said, "You can do great things, you can pray, but that will not get you into heaven."
The creatures eyes water up a bit, but he holds his own "Well, what If I take communion? Would I be allowed to, even? What must I do?"
The man tells him, "I really don't know what to tell you. But I can ask the priest what must be done."
The next meeting would be the last the two ever had together. He sees the creature on the path, and just shakes his head.
"The Priest told me that you can do good, you can pray, you can even take communion, but unless you have a drop of Adam's Blood in you, you will not be allowed into heaven."
The creature looks at him. "Do not travel this road again. You have been kind, and I have been kind to humans for my entire life. But it's all been for nothing, haven't it? I will no longer be so kind to any man."
