Story: So my friend Rai's mother found this while digging outside of her house. Her mother cleaned it up and such, but Rai seems to be really creeped out about it. So she goes and hides it, but then once I hear about it our Friend Mackz asks for it and it's in his house while we go to my friend Digit's house. She seems like she's possessed while I swear Mackz was most likely possessed but by something good. No one except me remembers what happens that night. But Mackz helped Digit, which was good. She does get a few of these episodes but not often. I honestly think it's to many religious icons egging on certain things, but for some reason the statue triggered it.
I don't know if everyone is just freaked of how it looks, but for some reason it was found with nails in it's head. The yin-yang is my sealant on it.
It now lives with me.
I just heard weird noises, like clacking on the window or something else, but all has stopped when I put my necklace upon it.
It's freaky but very interesting.
It looks like something African, because we saw some sculptures like this at Earthbound, but none that seemed old or looked too close. But it looks more African than anything to me.

It looks like an offering bowl. It does remind me of Africa which suggests to me it's related to a syncretic African-Catholic faith like Vodou or Santeria.

It's possible it was buried intentionally. You may have undone someone's spell. It's also possible that there was some sort of charm on it against those who dug it up - y'know, in the vein of Shakespeare's epitaph. "Blessed be the man who spares these stones but cursed be he who moves my bones", or something.

I personally would rebury it, out of respect for those who buried it in the first place.

Why did you remove the nails?

I didn't remove the nails. I came with nails.
I almost thought it was like an ashtray than anything. It does have niches like one.
But Also a turtle is carved into it.
I am not to familiar with voodoo or Santeria.
And besides I would have to travel to my friend's house to bury it. I can't bury it. Something about it seems different since I took it in.
I've have cursed items before and none seem to cause trouble around me.
But I never dug up the item, my friend's mother did. And honestly nothing weird has gone on. I just don't get why my friends were acting strange that night. It could have been merely coincidence that all of that happened when Mackz first got it. But It hasn't done anything bad. Usually things like this just wander around in my house causing annoying noises.

Ooohhh, I see them! ^_^ They were little.

Vodou and Santeria are religions created when African slaves were forced to give up their traditional faiths in favour of Christianity. What they did was combine their traditional religions with Catholicism, in order to sort of hide their traditional practises.

If you're happy that there's nothing wrong with it, then don't do anything. The spell would be broken anyway, because it's already been dug up, but chances are it would have run its course so no harm, no foul. It may look a bit fearsome but there's no reason that it's necessarily a bad thing. It may be a protective object, or buried to return it to the earth after use.

I would like to do some more research on this. If you could post more pictures of different angles, especialy the bottom, I might beable to get more out of it. From what I'm seeing I think it might be more south american then african. I do see the "africaness" in it, but something doesn't feel right on it. If you haven't experienced anything wrong (ebgbs are one of the bigest warning signs) then I wouldn't expect you to reburry it. After all it would make a great piece for your alter. The thing that confuses me is that turtles are more widely used in native american pieces. Some storys say that a giant turtle carries the earth on it's back.
Well I'll be able to tell you more of my opion of it when I get more pictures.

I will post some pictures up as soon as my camera stops being a jerk and works.

I have to say that thing DOES give me the creeps. You say it hasn't caused any harm to you or anyone else, so my thinking is that perhaps this thing was used for something negative before you guys found it. Maybe there's some residual negative energy still clinging to it that's to blame for how people are responding.

If you want to get rid of the creepy vibes, you could try smudging it (you know, burning sage incense around it, wafting the smoke onto the wood, etc), or putting blessed salt in the bowl, or flicking blessed water onto the statue to see if that might help cleanse it of the negativity. I'd suggest doing that anyway, since you never know what sorts of energies are clinging to that thing, that might one day rear their ugly heads! Haha

EDIT: I just thought of something. People used to bury items/objects at crossroads, with iron nails hammered in. The idea was that iron drives away old magick, and burying something at a crossroads kept its spirit from rising up and wandering the earth again. I think I'm beginning to agree with those who said that this might have been buried for a reason. >.> Perhaps, for safety's sake, you ought to set about cleansing this thing?

Nah, no spell is so general. If it had "negative energies" attached to it they would have been directed at something specifically, and the spell would have been broken anyway when dug up and had probably run its course ages ago. Any remnants of energy that are attached to it wouldn't escape anywhere else. They'd still be focused.

Magic related to iron and crossroads is very European, which would suggest a different class of magic altogether. I'm still going with an African composite faith, so to me it feels less likely, but the practitioner might have had some interest in European witchcraft as well, I suppose. Depends how old it is.

If I were you, actually, I'd take it to a museum or something. I'm sure there's an anthropologist out there somewhere who knows exactly what it is and where it's likely to have come from.

Those are both very good points. I would take it to me museum before trying to purify it. As long as you're not worried and nothing comes up.

You might find out something interesting about it. Then it would make a wonderful alter piece AND quite a conversation piece.

I agree that spells are not usually so broad in focus. My only concern was that if the thing had been used for something negative before, maybe some of that negativity is lingering. Like maybe the statue comes with baggage. lol

I haven't done any research on it. I'm sorry. I've been a bit busy in life. Easter and all. That's just an excuse really. I want to know more about it, I just haven't gotten around to it.
Over the next week I'll be sure to try to find more out about it with the pictures you have posted.
Like I mentioned before more pictures would help me more, especialy the bottom.

obviously a face like that means something bad, as for the symbol i would have to do some research, a bit of visits to some freinds and such, but looking at it i can kinda get a gist of the kind of presence it gives off. it looks indeed like an offering bowl, so i fugure it must have been part of a shrine to appease or repel a sort of demonic presence or in the very least an angry spirit, im leaning towards repeling demon because of the lack of designs on the statue. the notched encourages me to think ashtry also, but that dosent mean i couldnt have been used for a higher purpose, especially since ashtray bowls go straight down often, this one curves to the cener like the inside of half a sphere.
possibly a liquid offering was to be given is what i can gather from the shape of the bowl, possibly blood because the iorn in it wards of demons and the face of the statue itself is probably meant to scare something, so possibly a demon.
if im right about some of this stuff, i would bury it back like everyone says and give it an iorn or blood (go with iorn) offering, or otherwise your freind could be in some trouble. the statue was there to scare demons or spirits off, but if its not there its not doing its job. im getting a second opinion from my followers and see what they think as well.
