I think it is quite predictable that conservatives would be angry over this. Defence spending is done thought primarily private contractors, which means that the good 'ol boy senators who are ex military and now have shares in private contracting firms make a lot of money this way. Conservative political philosophy is all well and good, but there are many who follow it only because it keeps them rich.
Another example of a very common conservative hypocrisy is the interference in personal choice and morality. Using the power of the state to interfere with the market will have them sputtering with outrage, while using the power of the state to interfere with people's personal private lives and legislate morality seems to be perfectly acceptable.
try not to stereo type all conservatives as being like that. at the heart of conservatism as Reagan put it is libertarianism. not all conservatives are part of the religious right that hi-jacked the conservative movment
