Okay, here's Boomer w/ my daughter. He is absolutely, hands-down the best dog I've ever owned. He's wicked smart and super gentle. However, he has two major problems:

1. He has seizures. He needs to take Phenobarbital pills twice a day or it's nearly guaranteed he'll have an episode. The pills cost around $25 a month plus food expenses so roughly $60/mo to keep him healthy.

2. We just found he has heartworms (Yay for Murphy's Law crying You totally suck! ) and treatment is going to cost more than our house payment: roughly $860. burning_eyes

My husband has been telling me for years, eventually Boomer is going to have a seizure in front of the kids and die and he'd rather put Boomer down than let the kids go thru that. So far the pills keep him from doing that but we've already had to increase his dosage twice already (his system is adapting to the meds).

As for the cost of problem #2, we can slightly afford treatment but it makes things really, really tight. Ramen is sorta healthy right? I have no idea how I'm going to bring this up to my husband when he's already viewing Boomer as a ticking time bomb.

Any advice in what you would do in this situation? I can barely even process it at the moment. emo

Wow, that really sucks. I'm sorry. Honestly though, I would look at it like this: He's not just a pet. He's part of your family. This is gonna sound totally harsh, but if one of your children were in a similar position, you'd fight for it. If the seizure medicine is working, and he doesn't seem to be in too much pain, I'd fight to keep him.

As for the heartworms payment....I'd pay to get it done. Yeah, things'll be tight, but I've found its really not that hard to get back on track. My Dad was out for three months from work, mom doesnt work, AND we had to pay for surgery....So we were pretty tight for a while. But it doesnt take as long as everyone thinks to get back on track.

Try and convince your husband that even though a seizure in front of the kids IS a possibility, you have been and always will be diligent in giving him his medicine, and that Boomer deserves a chance.

Thx for the advice. I'm just really frustrated because we were trying to get him back on heartworm preventative (we were really struggling when my nephew came to visit last summer and it seemed okay since he's 99.8% indoors) and now that things are finally back on track THIS happens. I'll try selling some manga and collectibles on ebay and what not so hopefully things won't be too painful. sad

When my in-laws' bichon frise collapsed suddenly and had to be kept for several days at the clinic, they let them finance the bill instead of paying it all at once. Check with the vet, and see if they will work with you. Usually it is set up like a personal loan through the bank. The other option is to call around and find a vet that will do the treatment cheaper, even if it means driving to a different town. That usually ends up being what we do. Vet care is horribly expensive without the insurance to cover it.

lol FINALLY talked to my hubbie and we got another estimate for $630. Still high but I can probably raise most of that myself. *waves goodbye to precious book collection* crying

We might have to finance a little but I should be able to get treatment within the next month and a half. It also seems Boomer has a low thyroid condition that needs to be treated too (might be linked to the seizures). talk2hand rolleyes

I believe cbee is a couple of years older than me. I turn 30 this year, but don't let that freak you out. Most of my online friends are teenagers, oddly enough. The one age group I DIDN"T get along with when I WAS a teenager.

Probably old enough to be your mom (if I had a really wild sweet 16-btw I was sick with bronchitis, chicken pox, and flu for 1/3rd of that year-not so sweet for me).

As of Dec. 21st, I am *drumroll* 32! It's a little shameful that I'm on Gaia but if you know of another online site that has an equally high anime/manga fanbase let me know. xp

No way, then you'd leave!
xDD
It's not a bad thing to be here in your thirties. Talk to Wynnie (Eirwynn ) and you'll feel pretty normal. She's 45 or so, I believe.

That's good that you've found a way to pay for it. You can always earn the money again over time and re-buy your book collection.
So remember to write those titles down!

lol Most of my manga and anime dvds are on the internet like Vampire Knight, xxxHolic, Naruto, Land of the Blindfolded, Pretear etc. It's just the ones like Her Majesty's Dog (I got to shake the mangaka's hand at AnimeExpo!) and the older CLAMP titles I'm having a hard time deciding to let go. gonk On the bright side, I've made $80 selling some of my scrapbooking stuff that I never used this weekend. Only $500 more to go! rolleyes

I took Boomer to the vet last week and after some scary moments and two following visits (wouldn't eat and then couldn't walk on his hind legs), he's almost in the clear and has one more visit to go. Yay! *ignores fire from self-combusting credit and debit cards* lol

I'm glad he is doing better. I've never had any of ours on heartguard. Stupid, I know, but we have managed to end up laid off almost constantly since we got them, so we would have to get the blood test run on them now to even get the meds. I'm hoping we can sell enough in our next yard sale to make the mortgage this month. They sent us a scary letter saying if we didn't get caught up soon they would start legal proceedings. sweatdrop

eek eek That IS very, very scary! *sends good fortune vibes Du's way* I'm not saying you shouldn't be worried about the heartguard etc. but I think you are certainly justified putting about other concerns first. 3nodding Good luck! mrgreen
