Forward
Thank you for taking into your care one of our fine children. Without you, many great achievements would be hard or impossible for them, and for us. Together, these children will be the future of the ocean!

But now that you’re here, and you have a new child, the question might be, “Well, what now…?” Never fear, for we are here to help! It is our absolute top priority that you be successful in raising your rather aquatic children.

The first thing to remember about them is quite simple: Aside from a few appearance differences, and certain advantages and disadvantages in ability, they are just like any other child in the world: There will be happy times, sad times, easy days, hard days…it’s life, after all.

That said, there are certain unique things about them, not the least of which being where they came from, and we hope that this brief guide helps you on your way to understanding your child.

Living Conditions

When looking at one of Mer Co’s children, the first question is almost certainly, “Well, where would they live?” The answer is actually much simpler than you might expect: Anywhere. Every mer, no matter what their template species is, retains human lungs, and a tolerance for being out of the water almost indefinitely.

It is true that certain mers will find themselves far less comfortable out of the water than others—most notably those whose template species are of the soft variety, nudibranches, jellyfish, and the like. However, this is only a slight inconvenience to them.

It is still highly discouraged to bring any mer to the desert or other similarly dry locations, but you are welcome and encouraged to bring your child to your home and have them live with you like any other child.

It would be a good idea, of course, to give them some sort of water to spend time in, as they certainly appreciate and enjoy sitting in (and under) the water far more than the average child. All of Mer Co’s water facilities are, of course, open to you and your child whenever you come on site, but no one expects families to spend all their times on site.

Basic Needs

The mers’ needs are, as you might expect, very similar to a normal human’s. They may show a preference toward certain types of food in line with what their template species eat, but this is by no means required. They may safely eat any food that any other person can eat.

Almost without exception, the simplest choice for a bed for any mer is simply a tank of salt water large enough for them to float in comfortably. In certain cases, that would probably be in the best interest of your furniture, as well! Mer Co can provide you with a small tank for this purpose upon request. If you would prefer to not have tanks of water in your house, there is nothing at all wrong with giving your child a proper bed…just keep in mind any spare appendages they may have, and what effects those might have on bedding.

Schooling

Mer Co provides a full school curriculum for all mers starting at age 5. It is strongly encouraged that you send your child to school at Mer Co, as our facilities are far better equipped for them than any other school in the world, but if you have a separate institution you wish to send your child to, please contact Mer Co administration to inform them of this fact.

Initial schooling at Mer Co is only two days a week, and includes basic reading and writing, as well as social interactions, and time spent in Mer Co’s pools and bay.
