Allo Friends,
I would like to tell you everything we know about the old trigger in hopes that this will eventually help us find the new trigger.
Here is how the old trigger worked: if you killed certain monsters in different parts of the beach within a short period of time, landshark would spawn. You could do this every half hour. When we had a nice big crew, we would simply wipe out all the monsters on the beach as quickly as possible. This way we would would kill the trigger monsters and spawn the landshark.
This was all well and fun and we killed many a shark, but we still didn't know which exact monsters needed to be killed. So we started putting guards in certain sections of the beach who made sure that all the monsters in their section were left alive. If we could spawn the shark without killing the monsters in that square, we knew that we could cross that section off our list and look in other sections for the trigger monsters.
See the next post for a map of the sections we managed to cross off our list. After I'm done with the maps I'll put a post about how we might find the new trigger.

Here is a map that shows which monsters did NOT have to be killed to spawn the landshark: We put guards in these parts of the beach who made sure that all the monsters in their square were alive when the landshark spawned. Once we found these spots, we would skip them on all future spawnings of the landshark. This map was not completed before the trigger was changed. See the next post for another map that we were working on...

This map shows the parts of the beach where monsters NEEDED to be killed to spawn the landshark: Before they changed the trigger, we found two spots on the beach in which the monsters HAD to be killed in order to regularly spawn the landshark. Normally we could spawn the landshark every half hour on the dot, but if we left the monsters in these two squares alive, the landshark would never spawn no matter how many other monsters we killed. This led us to believe that these sections of the beach had specific monsters that were triggers for the landshark. Our eventual goal was to narrow it down to the exact monsters, but sadly the trigger was changed before we could do this. We were hoping to confirm other important spots but this has become difficult since they changed the trigger. See the next post to see what we can do next...

How to find the new trigger:
Sadly for us, the news about our landshark spawning was spread quickly on the ZOMG forum and Qixter changed the trigger. We don't know what he did, but we know he changed it in one update and we know he "made it more random." Now we no longer have a consistent way to spawn the landshark. We did not get a chance to finish off the maps above, but they might still be useful.
If we want to find the new trigger, our best bet is to eliminate things that are NOT the trigger. My own feeling is that the trigger has not changed very much and that Qixter has added a new element of chance to whether or not the trigger will work. We won't know for sure unless we can cross some things off our list.
The first thing we can try is what we tried before: watch certain parts of the beach to see which monsters are alive when the landshark spawns. Sadly, because of the new randomness in the trigger, this process will be a lot slower. You can try to do this systematically if you have lots of time. Otherwise, just remember that whenever the landshark DOES spawn, you should look around your section of the beach to see whether or not ALL the monsters there are alive. If all the monsters in your section of the beach were alive when the landshark spawned, let us know which section you were in.

List of things that are probably not the trigger:
There's a handful of landshark theories that can be pretty quickly eliminated with the following question: "For your theory to work, would Gaia have to pay its developers to create a whole new feature in the ZOMG game just for the sake of the landshark?"
If the answer to this question is "Yes, for my landshark theory to work, Gaia would have to pay developers to create a whole new feature in the game" then you can probably ignore the theory.
So with that in mind, here's some theories we can eliminate:
1) Since no other monsters in ZOMG use server population to decide whether or not they spawn, we can safely guess that server population would not be part of the trigger for the landshark.
2) Since all ZOMG servers run the same version of the game, we can safely guess that Gaia did not program a feature that seperates "landshark servers" from "non-landshark" servers.
3) Since no other ZOMG monsters are programmed to behave differently depending on which layer they're on, we can safely guess that layers are not part of the trigger for the landshark.
I'll add more as they come up...

List of other ZOMG triggers that might give us a hint:
1) Some triggers have an element of chance that determines whether or not they will work. Example: For the Lawn Gnome General, killing the same monsters around the purple mushroom can cause two different events. It's either: a) the alarm rings and the General comes out, or b) the alarm rings and a bunch of regular gnomes come out.
2) Certain monsters will not work as triggers unless you've killed other monsters. Example: In the old version of Kokeshi's doll, killing the black and white doll would not grant you a completed quest unless you had first killed specific yellow collectors dolls.
3) Different parts of a large map can be used as triggers -- it does not all have to happen on the same screen. Example: the 3 buttons in the shallow seas.
I'll add more as they come up...

Input from other people:
Spartan05089234 pointed out that the there is a basket in Otami ruins that triggers monsters when opened. This means we cannot rule out the possibility that beach treasure chests might be involved in the landshark trigger.
I should add that when we were testing the original trigger, we sent guards to watch every chest on the beach to make sure they remained closed when we spawned the landshark. We successfully spawned the landshark at that time without having to open any chests. This may have been changed for the new trigger though.

I see my anchorbug hilllllllll! <3
I'm useless when it comes to thinking about this stuff, but you know I'm always willing to help with the actual experimentation part.
This thread makes me happy. heart
