Scandinavian Fossegrim

Physical Description / It is difficult to describe the actual appearance of the Fossegrim, as one of his central attributes was thought to be shapeshifting. Perhaps he did not have any true shape. In the simplest terms, a Fossegrim is a water fairy, similar to the Nix. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The Fossegrim is most often described as a young man with beautiful features. Despite variances, he is always male and never seen without a violin or harp. Height was less than the average Scandinavian man and they had the Norwegian specific heavy brow and well-sculpted nose. Fossegrim are said to posses white skin and light blonde hair with gray-blue eyes. Clothing (or lack thereof) varied from story to story, though it is assumed the Fossegrim wore scant items made from natural sources, such as hides and plants. He may have also worn the scavenged items of drowning victims.

While many stories depicted the Fossegrim as a humanoid figure, he has also been portrayed as a pure white horse, and even a glimmering piece of treasure deep beneath a river's surface.

Behavior / The Fossegrim is a passionate creature, capable of both undying love and unyielding hatred. They have led many astray with their ethereal music, often times shielding himself behind a waterfall, urging his listeners to brave the waves where they ultimately drown. Not all of these spirits were necessarily malevolent; in fact, many stories exist that indicate at the very least that Fossegrim were entirely harmless to their audience and attracted not only women and children, but men as well with their sweet songs. Fossegrim are said to grow despondent if they do not have free, regular contact with a water source, and prefer their secretive lifestyle to that of the social human.

Powers / Unmatched prowess of stringed instruments, shape shifting, and melding (disappearing into the water) are all said to be contained in the Fossegrim's bag of tricks. In fact, it is said that all great Norwegian violinists were taught of the Fossegrim. In one particularly curious finding, I quote -

"The STROMKARL, called in Norway Grim or Fosse-Grim (Waterfall-Grim) is a musical genius like the Neck. Like him too, when properly propitiated, he communicates his art. The sacrifice also is a black lamb [c] which the offerer must present with averted head, and on Thursday evening. If it is poor the pupil gets no further than to the tuning of the instruments; if it is fat the Strömkarl seizes the votary by the right hand, and swings it backwards and forwards till the blood runs out at the finger-ends. The aspirant is then enabled to play in such a masterly manner that the trees dance and waterfalls stop at his music."

The enthralling music of this fairy was most dangerous to women and children, especially pregnant women and unbaptized children. Aside from their mastery of the bow, Fossegrim are said to be quite persuasive, easily luring listeners to their deaths if the proper precautions are not taken.

The Fossegrim was also an omen for drowning accidents. He would scream at a particular spot in a lake or river, in a way reminiscent of the loon, and on that spot a fatality would later take place. Because of this, it was thought that the Fossegrim had some innate ability to read one's future, should it pertain to disaster or death.

Weaknesses / Some stories tell how the Fossegrim sings about his loneliness and his longing for salvation, which he purportedly never shall receive, as he is not "a child of God." They are sorrowful creatures who suffer from the ravages of loneliness, depression and mania.

When malicious Fossegrim attempted to carry off people, they could be defeated by calling their name; this, in fact, would be the death of them and is the only known way to destroy a Fossegrim.

Another weakness of the Fossegrim was blood, and it is said that three drops of blood as an offering would evoke a Fossegrim from his river. The same can be said of snuff, Norwegian Vodka and particularly savory, dark meats.

Scandinavian Fossegrim

Name / Alabaster Owlied
Origin / A mineral, well noted for it's milky-white color.
Calling / Alabaster, Al on occasion
Past Name / Hvitkilde (Norw: White Spring)
Gender / Male
Sexuality / This will be decided upon reaching the appropriate age.
Myth / Scandinavian Fossegrim

Physical Description / Alabaster is similar in appearance to the froth at the base of a waterfall. He has two pale-blue eyes, barely a shade darker than the whites. Thin, silver-blonde hair frames his square face in short locks, joining from either side at his chin in a well-trimmed beard. Hidden beneath his light features is skin as pale as...well, Alabaster. His chin, brow and nose are particularly strong. Clothing is less important to this Fae. He sticks to thermals, tunics and other simple styles of clothing in cotton.

Personality /

Interests /

Favorite Foods: Dark mutton, fish and common river vegetation.
Favorite Beverage: Vegetable juices, such as Cucumber and Ginger.
Favorite Type of Music: Classical-Romantic Music and traditional Scandinavian folk music - basically anything with a violin or a cello and an expressive composition.
Favorite Landscape: Areas of open waterfalls create feelings of eerie familiarity for Alabaster, but he prefers wooden landscapes after a light rain fall.
Favorite Animal: Jellyfish -- not a river creature, true, but he adores the wiggly creatures for their beauty and grace.
Favorite Colors: Blues, Greens and Purples.
Favorite Flower: Wildflowers.
Favorite Season: Spring.
Favorite Thing to Wear: Thin, light cotton clothing, such as traditional tunics, as well as dark leather breeches and boots.
Favorite Subject: One would think Music or Theory, but due to the technical way these classes are structured, he's all but boycotted the class. Instead his greatest interest lies in the field of Philosophy, wherein his opinions can actually be applied.
Hobbies: Playing string instruments, as well as free-composing music. He is also fond of swimming, but he'd never enter a body of water without someone to watch over him...
