Celestia was laying, belly up, watching the clouds go by. The air was cooling down as the sun prepared to set. The ground was still warm and comforting. At a time like this, she couldn't resist laying down and resting.

Life prideless was fun for her. She was free and happy. No kids to watch. No excess hunting to do. Though she did get lonely. Celestia didn't care if a lion was good, evil, or whatever; she just wanted someone to hang out with. Hopefully she'd spot somebody tonight.

Ellipsis prowled along the dusty plains. Her balance was perfect, almost too perfect, as she placed one paw daringly in front of the other. Her tail swayed from side to side behind her, allowing her to shift her weight at precisely the right time from one foot to another. Her head was held high, the ends of her teeth just sticking out from around her mouth. Muscles rippled beneath her well kept pelt, and her claws warned of threat and danger should anyone come too close.

This was her domain, and she wasn't afraid to let others know about it. She belonged here. Noticing a lioness up ahead, she snarled to herself. How dare someone else come here? Crouching low to the floor, she began to creep forwards until she was almost on top of the lion. Her balance mixed with the power in her whole body were a lethal combination, allowing her to move silently over the grass.

"Who are you?" She snarled suddenly, rising up from her crouch and unsheathing her claws. "This is my territory. Da'lin territory." Even though it was no such thing, she wouldn't let this lion know that.

Celestia was surprised by the lion snarling in front of her. The earth had sent her no vibrations or implication that she would uphold a confrontation. This Da'lin lioness must have keene sense of her surroundings to be so silent and overpowering.

To walk in such silence is a true gift.
Such unison.
Such grace.
Such peace.
Well, the term "peace" should be used lightly.

Being lazy and impolite, Celestia remained laying down. "The name given to me is Celestia," she said. "These clouds, this grass," she paused for a large breath of air, "And this air," she breathed out peacefully, "It can't possibly belong to one being. Would you like me to move over a bit? This is the best spot to see the clouds. I'm willing to share." With that she finished talking and looked the lioness in the eyes. She smiled. Celestia was too obnoxious and naive for her own good. I wouldn't put it past anyone if they tried to have her killed.

Ellipsis pressed one ear back and snarled loudly, her eyes narrowed into slits. As the lioness blatantly ignored her demands and continued to lay there, her claws sprung out and she dug them against the ground in anger. How dare some stranger act as though she could stay here? As though they were friends? As though Ellipsis even allowed herself to have friends?

"Fool. You are as idiotic as your name, with your head up in the clouds." Her brown eyes flashed a warning of danger. "I don't think you quiet understand the situation you are in. This is now my territory. Everything from this disgusting, dusty air that we breathe to every stingy blade of grass belongs to me and me alone."

Although the lioness wanted nothing better than to dig her claws into this lions back, she knew in some small part of her mind that that was immoral. Although she was prone to being violent, being a Da'lin after all, she still knew when to back off and when to attack or not. Something about this lioness made her pause. She was like a cub, totally unknowing of anything around her, so innocent and carefree.

Celestia pondered, 'If I'm as stupid as my name then my parents made the perfect choice when they bestowed me with it. After all, if my name was stupider then me, we wouldn't match. I wonder if this lioness's name is as angry as she is.'

She could feel the tension in the air as thick as blood. It would be wise to change her tone with this lioness in particular. So she stood up, at eye level, so they may appear as equals. Then she held one paw forward to shake. "So, what's the name that Dalin bestowed upon you?" She said kindly and almost as if she forgot all about the issue at hand.

In her head she was laughing as a silly thought came to mind. 'What if I went out of character completely and tried to kill this lioness.' Of corse she wouldn't, and couldn't, but Celestia liked to over-think things in rather odd ways.

and you won't kill me

Ellipsis' mouth twitched angrily, completely unsure of how to behave. Sure, she liked a good fight and didn't want to appear weak, and she'd kill without a second thought, but this lioness seemed to have no idea what she was doing. As Celestia stood up, a wave of rage flowed through the Da'lin. How dare she pretend they were equal? She was a member of one of the great Da'lin prides, and here some Zahina was trying to...befriend her.

Digging her claws into the ground, she very slowly sat down on the hard ground, the tension not leaving her muscles. "My name is not important, although if you must pester me it is Ellipsis, as I am the one who silences others and creates pauses." She shot an evil grin at the lioness at this point, teeth glittering in the sun.

Only a few seconds before this carefree lioness and Ellipsis already had a headache from her. This did not bode well.

Celestia didn't understand what Ellipsis ment by: "I am the one who silences others and creates pauses."

'Ellipsis... I think I've heard that word before? Ellipsis... Uh, what does it mean? Ellipsis... Oh wait I rememer!' Celestia was thinking and then it hit her. "Oh! Your name it's a pause in speech! An unfinished thought at the end of a sentence! A trailing off into silence..." She anounced and then silenced herself. Her entusiasm didn't go well with this lioness. How could she get through to her? Every lion has a positive side, a breaking point...

Not many lions could make Celestia feel awkward. It was usualy the other way around. But she wouldn't be broken.

She smoothed off the earth where Ellipsis dug in.

a heart
and a mind
slowly
unless it gets a little help

Twitching an ear back in irritation, the lioness watched the crazy Celestia go on and on about her name. "I guess you don't understand exactly what I mean." Her voice was a low purr, teasing but deadly at the same time. "By silence, I mean..." She dragged a claw slowly over the ground that Celestia had just flattened out, "I mean kill."

This lion was a real nutcase, going on about grammar without realizing that her life was in danger. It reminded Ellipsis of herself when she was little. As the thought crossed her mind, she felt a thorn stab deep into her heart. Her mind tried to suppress the memories as a snarl rose up her throat.

Her body began to shake. No, not now! She couldn't loose control in front of this lioness, she had to control her memories. They were over and done with, and she could do nothing to change them. She'd chosen her path, and it was one where she needed no one else.

"Oh kill? Yes, that does make sense too. In fact it's beyond the normal meaning, which gives it excellent meaning," by this point Celestia was just rambling nonsense, "But it is a rather clever context. Very threatening too."

Celestia looked at the cut on the ground. "Heh, I presume those claws aren't just for gardening then? That line could have easily been across my heart. Heh... Well, thank Zahina, or Dalin, or whoever that you are a merciful lioness today."

Then Celestia felt something. The lioness Ellipsis gave off an odd nervous vibe, not of fear but of some sort of rage, or perhaps regret of some sort. What was the matter? "Now I'm quite aware that I'm a slight bit obnoxious at times. Though I'm sure you haven’t noticed. But have I said something so wrong that it could shake your disposition?" She hoped her psyche was all right.

Now was not a good time to think up a rhyme.
Then again,
Silence is a beautiful rhyme

Ellipsis closed her eyes as the lioness began to ramble on, seemingly becoming aware of the danger she was in. With a sigh, she slowly retracted her claws and shook her head. She wasn't sure she could bring herself to hurt Celestia, her conscience was firmly against it. She guessed it couldn't be too bad to talk, just so long as she didn't start feeling attached, because that would be bad. Very bad. And dangerous. She could trust no one.

"I think I'm merciful enough today." She said, her muscles still tensed up just in case. Her voice was cautious, but at least it was clear she wouldn't attack now. "As for gardening, all I do with these is rip weeds to shreds." Her mind was blaring a warning signal-she was being too open, she would send off the wrong signals and get attached.

Then Celestia uttered those words. Ellipsis felt herself grow hot, and cold all over, at the same time. Red anger clouded her eyes, but her heart was as cold as ice, a stabbing pain thudding through her. Leaping up to her paws, she snarled and crouched. "I'm fine." The words were spat out of her mouth, and her breathing was hard and heavy. The lioness had touched a sore spot.

Celestia held her paw to her lips, stopping all sound from escaping. She knew she was on pins and needles. She was saying the wrong things. But what? What did she say? She rewinded her words in her head but she heard nothing that could have tapped a soar spot. 'Before Ellipsis began to look uneasy I had said a very long speech about the evident meaning of her name. So that couldn't have been the problem... Was it my tone? After all I am speaking in a close friendly way to a Dalin with a tough demeanor. That had to be it!' At least Celestia thought so...

Whether or not she was right, Celest had to go with it. She had to give respect and belittle herself toward this Dalin to make her happy. "Of coarse you are. Sorry I should watch my tone in front of a Dalin like yourself. I really should watch my place," she said humbly. She bowed her head slightly. This was not her cup of tea but if it was what this lioness wanted then it was worth trying. Then again if this wasn't the way to approach Ellipsis then Celest could go back to her normal behavior.

If being me makes you uneasy
and being you doesn't seem pleasing
and there's no one else around to be
why don't I be no one
and you can be me
or you can be no one
and I'll be a tree
ha, or you can be you
and I'll make up somebody

Ellipsis' fur was standing up in anger, but the uncontrollable rage was fading. Poor lioness, rambling on without understanding anything. Forcing herself to retract her claws, she sat herself down once more, taking deep breaths of cool air to help calm herself. Swinging her head away for a second, she closed her eyes. It was better not to make friends, that was true, but was it fair to terrorize others?

Surely that would be behaving in the same way as them, and she didn't want that. No, she should be passive enough. Of course, if lions got nosy that was a different matter. "No, it's not that." Her voice rumbled eventually, looking back at the lioness. "I... er... have issues with my temper."

Carefully, she swung her tail over the marks her claws had left in the ground. She could bury them for a little while, what did it matter? Besides, Celestia seemed to be crazy enough to think the floor needed healing. Slowly, her fur relaxed a little. The anger still flared, but she would hold her tongue and control it. She'd probably scared any remaining wits this lioness had left, anyway.

Celestia was very relieved. If Ellipsis said everything was ok, then everything must be ok right? Plus anger issues were no big deal. Ok she didn't word for word say that everything was ok. She just implied that there wasn't anything to walk on pins and needles about. Ellipsis looked like a strong lioness with good personal control. So, she must be fine. Maybe.

"Heh, well if that's all that's the matter then that's fine. No worries. Just anger issues. Everybody has some sort of issues. At least your open about it," Celestia said going from a fearful voice back to a happy-go-lucky relieved voice. Though she didn't need to humble herself in front of Ellipsis, she still should act a bit more normal; just for conversation perposes.

Ellipsis pressed an ear back as the lioness seemed to mumble on and on. Did being afraid make her giddy or something? Trying to stop her irritation, she forced herself to lie down, red eyes still glaring venomously at her. Of course, it was hard to tell if she was glaring or not. The color gave her a dark complex, which sent most scurrying off even on the rare occasion that the Da'lin tried to be friendly.

Now she was regretting terrifying the female. She wasn't sure if she preferred her insane babbling, or her sane babbling. At least the insane babbling she could ignore and pretend it didn't make any sense, but doing that with normal rambling made Ellipsis look stupid. And that was not a good thing.

Clearing her throat, she tried to distract herself from her current train of thought. "So... er... how long have you lived around here for?" Her tone was cautious, but most of the anger had faded from it. Deep down, Ellipsis was a sociable lion. She just didn't show it. She didn't show a lot of things.

Celestia looked up at the sun and began counting very quietly.

"One two three four five six seven eight nine Ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen"

After 20 seconds she just stopped counting and paused for another 5 seconds before speaking.

"Two-thousand five-hundred and eighty-five days give or take a few," she said. "I do leave every once in a wile to see family and nature so my counting may be off by a few days. So how about you? Are you from around here?" In her head she went over the numbers a few more times wile hoping that Ellipsis didn't wonder where the hell that came from. After all, Celestia was known for being unpredictable.
