Is all that we see or seem... here it goes: My daughter is 2 and a half and yet she has a trouble talking. Period. She still only knows some words. It could be due to the fact that Im bilingual [[I speak Portuguese && English]] and my grandparents are trying to teach her portuguese as well...but I don't know. She only knjows some words in EITHER language and speaks in her own made up one. I just don't know what to do!!! She loves to watch her TV shows and watch her dvds [[which are ALL in english]] but she doesnt seem to be picking up anything from that. We have a TON of educational toys which she doesnt play with. And when my husband and I try to get her to sit down so we can either read to her or teach her some words, she refuses. I just dont know what to do!! I know all children are different and learn at different paces but...this makes me feel like a very inadequate parent.
Does anyone know of something I could try to do?

Have you talked to your doctor to find out whether or not that's normal? Or to other moms who have children her age?
My son is only 12 months, so I won't be much help to you... but I think that's fairly normal for a 2 1/2 year old. I've heard young children pick up on language fairly well, so I don't think hearing two languages often would affect her learning words. Perhaps she's picking up more words than she's repeating?
If I were you, I'd ask around and find out whether that's average or not, before you start worrying too much.

Talk to her pediatrician first. That way, it can be determined that she's not having another issue like problems hearing.
Some children just do not like to talk and take longer to do it then others. Is she showing other signs that she's comprehending language and what words mean?

Talk to a ped first, definitely.
Honestly, I wouldn't recommend "comparing" to other children of friends or family. I've been there done that, it ends up being some type of contest and you slam yourself with mommy guilt. At the same time, be realistic, you know?
However, if she IS bilingual and learning two languages, YES, it can have some delays. It's whether or not she's just learning just a few words or immersing in both. Either ways, it's not that big of a deal and usually miniscule on the problems.
My ds went through 2 years of speech therapy. I had a very rude ped tell me he was going to be made fun of blah blah, but speech therapy made such a wonderful difference. You don't have to cram educational stuff for them to be geniuses. They're so young and kids and it'll come to them. Einstein wasn't a genius at age 2 and didn't speak according to his parents till he was almost 4!
If you want some more advice, let me know. There's some small ways to help get her to work on being more vocal. She could be shy, she could be overwhelmed by it all, etc. Signing on a needs base could help as well. My ds was very stubborn, but being in an enviroment with a speech therapist helped so so much.

I wanted to add those links for you. I want to add that my ds was barely speaking at age 2 and now he never stops at age 6! xd

Like everyone else said, talk to your pediatrician.
I know that children who are taught two languages from the beginning do not have a large vocabulary as children who know only one language because their vocabulary is divided between two languages.
Personally, my daughter's language took off when she turned two after having tubes put in her ears. Before the surgery she didn't like reading books with me, but it was such a change when she could hear. Now, she loves music, TV, books and talking people's ears off! You never really know what will push your child so suddenly into the next level.

My daughter is turning two on the 25th, and is only saying a couple of different words. I think she knows a lot more than she's coming off on. But the doctor did tell me that having my second daughter so closely after my first would cause either motor or verbal delays, so I'm guessing that has a huge part of it.
Talk to a pediatrician, but remember that all children develop a little differently! As long as she can follow easy commands, knows her name, and can understand you, than I'm guessing she knows a little more than she's saying.
Do you have other children in the house?
